My boss said if I'm not comfortable going in to work to stay at home.

Luckily I have the choice as I can afford not to work and can't wfh

I'm going to carry on as the kids are at school and dh is always travelling so no logic in even trying to avoid it except through hygiene measures.

Our trust struggles from poor recruitment and any serious teaching hospital with proper icu is about 2.5 hours away so I don't really think there's any real chance of proper care for serious cases round here.

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 18:01

On the one hand, I'm praying myself and my family get to Easter well, then we can stay home and not be at risk. Dh is off for a good 9 days too.

But then I'm dreading all the extra mixing that will inevitably go on during Easter, skiing, travel etc and then coming back with more and more and more infected and dying.

macaronigonzalez · 05/03/2020 18:02

The person that died was one of the new diagnoses and contracted it within the UK. Very worrying in terms of community transmission and how long they may have had coronavirus and potentially been transmitting it.

typewrriter12 · 05/03/2020 18:02

Sorry to sound ignorant but do they subtract the people who have recovered from the given number Confused

AspergersMum · 05/03/2020 18:03

First death is in Reading. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51759602

namechangemania · 05/03/2020 18:03

The patient who died in the UK was an older person with underlying health conditions according the BBC News

ExhaustedGrinch · 05/03/2020 18:04

I work in a dementia home. Our plan is basically hope we dont get an outbreak at our home. Very scary.

Can you check visitors temperatures at the door and refuse entry if they have a fever?

Oakmaiden · 05/03/2020 18:04

I think the "it's just a cold" attitude isn't helped by the fact we automatically assume that the media and our politicians are lying to us. Kind of a case of the Boy Who Cried Wolf...

FaisPasCiFaisPasCa · 05/03/2020 18:04

Typewriter no, but you can look at active cases. Try googling Worldometer Coronavirus.

AspergersMum · 05/03/2020 18:05

Someone who had been in and out of hospital for other reasons. This is so not good.

usernameishistory · 05/03/2020 18:06

My rationalising tells me we have most of our cases here because of skiiers coming from a very cold climate where ordinarily viruses flourish, in the cold, along with shared equipment, which doesnt happen here.

We are substantially warmer, although we dont know cv19 temperature tolerances specifically.

Flowers for berkshire loss of life, and obvious suffering with other medical issues also.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 05/03/2020 18:07

fezzes everyone has their head in the sand. Mass death has not been a thing in this country for a long time (possibly since 2nd world war?) - we have drugs to treat most known illnesses - people don't want it to be true. Unfortunately, that means it will spread faster.

People are also unbelievably selfish and inconsiderate of vulnerable groups, which I think is really sad.

I suspect the government are fostering this false sense of everything being ok. They are being unbelievably irresponsible not putting more travel restrictions in place IMO (as other countries have done).

'Mild' cases of this are probably not that mild when you have it. And if we're overreacting (unlikely given the evidence from elsewhere) and the economy takes a small hit - then so what? Better than lots of people dead in my book. Boris and his cronies don't agree though.

LuxLFC · 05/03/2020 18:08

My employer issued advice as we deal with members of the public. I don't want to say too much but they said don't meet with anyone who has travelled back from an affected country which is pointless because not all countries were listed (e.g. Iran) & secondly it's confirmed in our city! The way the govt & in some cases 111 have handled it makes me think they want it to spread or to cause mass fear on purpose. So much around the handling of it doesn't make sense.

mondaynoon · 05/03/2020 18:08

My boss got back from northern Italy a week and a half ago and has been coughing his way around three care homes ever since. He called 111 and they didn't even suggest testing. So he's been at work ever since in contact with highly vulnerable client groups.

I find this difficult to believe. My friend also returned from N Italy a week and half ago, developed a very slight cough and was tested. She didn't think it necessary but 111 insisted.

MurrayTheMonk · 05/03/2020 18:08

Autumn rose because 111 told him he didn't need to (incredibly) and becuase he 'didn't feel that bad' 'it's probably just a cold' and he doesn't personally take the whole thing very seriously. He went home sick this afternoon however.😑

hopeishere · 05/03/2020 18:09

I agree the fact that this person who has died had not been in contact with an infected person or to one of the other countries. I think this has been here much longer than we think.

PointlessUsername · 05/03/2020 18:10

The amount of comments on twitter about the patient already having underlying health conditions are making me annoyed, like oh well doesnt matter then they were already ill.
Surely a good percentage of the uk are Asthmatic, have other health problems and therefore are vunerable. I have 3 of us that do out of DH & i and our 4 dc. Alot of people could end up dying.

middleager · 05/03/2020 18:10

MurrayTheMonk · 05/03/2020 18:10

Well I can't help it if you find it hard to believe. It's what happened. He said he called them twice.told them he'd just come back from a weekend in northern Italy, near to but not in the then recognised Corona areas. Had a cold but nothing worse. The advice was not to get tested 'at this stage' or to self isolate. This was a week and half ago... perhaps it wasn't being taken as seriously then.

CrunchyCarrot · 05/03/2020 18:11

This is called the 'let all the vulnerable people die' strategy. No measures = more deaths.

That's absolutely monstrous. Angry

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 18:11

If they were like my df cared for at home there would be huge contact with community nurses, cleaners etc.

Or if person was nursing home, you've got that huge web of contacts.

I'm not understanding why people think closing schools etc isn't affective?

So many parents would be keen to keep their dc safe at home!. It would be very easy for me.
Yes some people would still mix, yes many dc would still see friends etc. But many wouldn't.

Italy looks like too little too late to me.

auslass · 05/03/2020 18:11

Confirmed case at hubby's office in Victoria now! And they're still making everyone go into the office. They just cleaned the section he was in! The section. I bet they used Ajax FFS.

furrytoebean · 05/03/2020 18:12

I agree @Oakmaiden
They have created so much distrust that people just don't believe anything they say.

They will have blood on their hands

MurrayTheMonk · 05/03/2020 18:12

Crunchycarrot, I'm beginning to think that's what the government are about tbh...

Blueberryham · 05/03/2020 18:12

This person had been in and out of hospital and only admitted and tested positive yesterday. So it is likely that other people at the hospital will have caught the virus
