In case it makes it out into the wilds of the internet - there's an email going around someone has attempted to make looking like a very plausible screenshot of a DMU uni official mail about a case - that one is a hoax and has been doing the rounds for a couple of weeks now with IT playing whack a mole trying to shut it down.

BiBiBirdie · 04/03/2020 18:47

@Kuponut that seems to be being done to a lot of Unis, colleges and schools. Schools I get because, well, children, but doing it to universities is cruel as parents with kids away will be worrying enough, I know I am about my niece, and two nephews. Especially my niece as she's last year of training to be a doctor.

#FRANCE —285 cases of #Coronavirus

I'm on my pbone, how do I watch a thread?

SansaSnark · 04/03/2020 18:48

I think a lot of studies, journal articles and press releases are being rushed out without the scrutiny they'd normally get.

Multiple strains could possibly explain some of the cases of re-infection though. And also make it more difficult for those trying to develop a vaccine.

Tighnabruaich · 04/03/2020 18:49

DH and I due to go to Spain for two weeks in mid-May. I'm getting worried, but he is such a stoic non-worrier that he thinks I'm mad to even consider cancelling. He is super fit, strong and healthy, even though he's mid 50s. Been to doctor once in 15 years, and it never occurs to him to worry about illness or sickness. On the other hand I'm mid-60s and asthmatic.

NotJustACigar · 04/03/2020 18:49

About the Liverpool case - a few days ago it was reported that a man starting at the Radisson Blu who had just traveled back from Italy was being tested. I wonder if that was him.

#UAE- a female student infected with #Coronavirus was in school

BiBiBirdie · 04/03/2020 18:50

Oh and can I appeal to all, if you have mostly secondary school age kids, sit them down and explain that although it's good they're not too worried and carrying on, please don't make jokes to others on CV
DD and DS decided to chance it today out of boredom ( I've been crapping myself all day) as there has been no cases there and school have wash stations and protocol, but DS came home quite upset as everyone is coughing on each other and shouting about CV.
He has Aspergers and it really shook him, especially with him being in the at risk group due to lung disease. (I didn't tell him, little sod is a science geek and googled it. I had been very guarded on his own illnesses but again, off he went to Google and looked up NHS website).

NotJustACigar · 04/03/2020 18:51

People in my workplace don't want to go on upcoming business trips but are too scared to refuse to go lest management accuse them of scaremongering. There seems to be no guidance coming from the top ☹️. And no one seems to want to be the first to say they're not going! Same with working from home.

Royal Stoke Hospital treating a Covid19 Patient

RedToothBrush · 04/03/2020 18:54

The daily mail article in fact says the following:

What have genetic tests revealed about the virus?

Scientists in China have recorded the genetic sequences of around 19 strains of the virus and released them to experts working around the world.

This allows others to study them, develop tests and potentially look into treating the illness they cause.

Examinations have revealed the coronavirus did not change much – changing is known as mutating – much during the early stages of its spread.

However, the director-general of China's Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Gao Fu, said the virus was mutating and adapting as it spread through people.

This means efforts to study the virus and to potentially control it may be made extra difficult because the virus might look different every time scientists analyse it.

More study may be able to reveal whether the virus first infected a small number of people then change and spread from them, or whether there were various versions of the virus coming from animals which have developed separately.

So whilst all the headlines are going on about two strains and one being more viralent than the other, it looks like there are actually 19 known strains.

Which is even more confusing!!!

Can I ask where a pp saw news about Flybe collapsing tonight?
My OH is flying with them tomorrow 🤦‍♀️

HeresMe · 04/03/2020 18:54

There has been a big increase today but according to reports 29 of these had just come back from areas that are at high risk so whist it is a big increase it isn't like it is crazily infecting people in the UK.

mumoftwodc · 04/03/2020 18:56

@JollyHostess it was on sky news app

ChipotleBlessing · 04/03/2020 18:56

The basic problem with that two strands paper is that its initial publication was in a source which needs to endorse the actions of the CCP. So probably scientists around the world know that they need to pick the data out from the spin, but newspapers are putting their own spin on the spin, each step getting further from what the data actually says.

The different articles about the L and S types contradict themselves?

No they don't. They both say the same thing, ie. the earlier, less severe strain (S type) has mutated into a more severe (L type). 70% infections are L type, but the prevalence of this appears to be decreasing. It is possible to be infected with both types at once.

^ Stoke info, although it was reported on BBC Midlands Today too.

swingchandelier · 04/03/2020 18:57

Telegraph article seems misleading. The article I read said that the aggressive L was 70% of cases due to early Wuhan spread but the less aggressive S form is now more prevalent.

ChipotleBlessing · 04/03/2020 18:58

It is however totally normal for there to be 19 strains of a virus. That’s why genome tracing is helpful tracking pandemics.

swingchandelier · 04/03/2020 18:58

Aggressive viruses die out as they kill people. Viruses don’t want to do that

LarkDescending · 04/03/2020 18:59

I am on a London bus where a woman is coughing all over everyone in the vicinity without even trying to contain it. The probability is that she doesn't have CV, but why have people not got the message that this is Not OK? Whatever the lurgy, I don't want it.

pussycatinboots · 04/03/2020 18:59

Jolly If they are going to go bump, they will do it overnight when all the planes are on the ground - that seems to be how it's been done in the past with other airlines.
