@justchecking1 thanks for that. Do you work in a hospital? Can you forsee a time when that level of provision is considered appropriate when treating this? Or do you think it is going to be isolation and hazmat suits all the way until a vaccine or treatment is developed?

cjt110 · 05/03/2020 14:07

@KenAdams "The 2019–20 coronavirus outbreak was confirmed to have spread to the Netherlands on 27 February 2020, when its first COVID-19 case was confirmed in Tilburg. It involved a 56-year-old Dutchman who arrived in the Netherlands from Italy. There are currently 38 confirmed cases of infection in the Netherlands[1]." Source

Not sure when the first UK based case was reported?

NatyoCheese · 05/03/2020 14:07

Telegraph have reported 90 cases as of this morning after 3 more reported in Scotland so not a huge jump if that’s correct

Nicepud · 05/03/2020 14:08

usernameishistory you and others may have had a point if posters were going 'oooh how exciting, guess how many dead today!'

Comparing worried posters speculating on the spread of the virus to them holding an ill pensioner number sweepstakes is daft at best, attempting to stifle conversation at worst.

As fir it being filler, are you worried mn will run out of threads? If you want a thread with no discussion or speculation in it (as lets face it all discussion here is essebtially 'pointless') then the create thread button is there for you.

This thread is obviously a godsend to many at this anxious time. I strongly dislike people being told what is acceptable for them to talk about (within mn guidelines obviously).

ellaandthebella · 05/03/2020 14:09

@NatyoCheese that is just the scotland ones added to yesterdays 2pm update. English ones are only announced daily at about 2 which we are waiting for at the moment.

Oakmaiden · 05/03/2020 14:10

@ShanghaiDiva With respect, I disagree. I think stating the facts as they come in is useful - far more so than some of the speculation that goes on. But in the end there are bound to be some people who are more interested in one part of the thread than another.

TokyoSushi · 05/03/2020 14:10

If by chance it is just 3 then that would be good news, but unusual?

Letseatgrandma · 05/03/2020 14:10

So very few new cases reported today?

orangepepper · 05/03/2020 14:10

Any update of figures for today?

ofwarren · 05/03/2020 14:10

The Scottish ones are always reported separately.
The English results have not been published yet.

KenAdams · 05/03/2020 14:10

@cjt110 - 31st Jan for the UK so the rapid spread in the Netherlands is hugely concerning.

TokyoSushi · 05/03/2020 14:10

No tweet from the Department of Health or BBC breaking news etc as there was yesterday, yet...

ShanghaiDiva · 05/03/2020 14:10

@Nicepud
If you are anxious and want to know about happened in China, feel free to ask me a question...

NotJustACigar · 05/03/2020 14:11

I think people are only guessing to mentally prepare themselves for hearing what the numbers might be, not out of any kind of making it into a game. I don't want to guess and I haven't participated in it but we all have different ways of coping and I think for some people guessing is one of them.

Oakmaiden · 05/03/2020 14:12

@TokyoSushi it would be fantastic news, but sadly is not very likely.

ShanghaiDiva · 05/03/2020 14:12

@Oakmaiden
The facts are useless if you do nothing with the information.

cjt110 · 05/03/2020 14:13

Recovered coronavirus patient, 36, dies of the disease five days after being discharged from a hospital in Wuhan Sorry DM is the source This concerns me

Fev11 · 05/03/2020 14:14

Chris Witty back-pedalled on the release of geographical x vs are data this morning but also said release of these data would be delayed by 24 hours to ensure accuracy as numbers rise so perhaps there won’t be a detailed update until tomorrow?

SistemaAddict · 05/03/2020 14:14

I agree that it's about mentally preparing. Just like chatting here helps to alleviate our anxiety or at least let us know we aren't the only ones worried. I talk when I'm anxious. Or go very quiet. The latter is more rare though.

Fev11 · 05/03/2020 14:15

*geographical case data

Eeyoresstickhouse · 05/03/2020 14:15

I have concerns that they have not released figures for today. It would seem highly improbable that their are no new cases. Could it be that they don't want a panic as they are so high?

I work in HE and we are getting zero updates at the moment. We had some in the beginning and we have been banned from travelling to China etc... but nothing about containment on campus.

Oakmaiden · 05/03/2020 14:15

Chris Witty back-pedalled on the release of geographical x vs are data this morning but also said release of these data would be delayed by 24 hours to ensure accuracy as numbers rise so perhaps there won’t be a detailed update until tomorrow?

I interpreted that as numbers would be released as normal, locations 24 hours later - but perhaps you are correct...

usernameishistory · 05/03/2020 14:16

The economy versus population health also interests me greatly.

However, people will also die without jobs, food, heating, homes, businesses, income, and support.

The economy currently keeps people alive, so it is a balancing act.

Medicines cost money, so do healthcare and all services vital to life support, especially for the vulnerable who cannot support themselves or for whom loss would leave dc orphaned, or unable to buy food, heating.
Many live this day as their last with heating or food, or even housing.
Others will have a cushion, maybe some savings to fall back on, maybe a considerate employer, or a job that can be worked from home.

justchecking1 · 05/03/2020 14:16

@oakmaiden

thanks for that. Do you work in a hospital? Can you forsee a time when that level of provision is considered appropriate when treating this? Or do you think it is going to be isolation and hazmat suits all the way until a vaccine or treatment is developed?

Yes, I'm a medic.

Not sure if appropriate is the right word, that will depend on how things work out with the CFR and other outcome measures.

I can definitely see a time where that type of provision becomes all that is available due to overwhelming numbers, if predictions are correct.

It's like anything. We just get habituated to the situation. It feels terrifying now but humans just can't keep that level of cortisol and adrenaline going long term, and we will become more accepting and complacent with it.

ShanghaiDiva · 05/03/2020 14:16

Preparing mentally for what may happen, but actual preparation and having a plan b if you or a family member is ill is more important imo.
