Were not in contain though.

Clearly.

As much as anything I think it will be the exam boards and universities themselves that will come up with the solutions.

This is correct. They are already meeting over it, making various contingencies - my daughter's sixth form college have reassured us of this. A friend of mine who does a lot of marking says that A level exams could be offered on various dates and taken in smaller groups, and the problem is more whether there are enough healthy markers available - though at least this is a job that can be done from home.

If things are bad enough, I've heard chatter that predicted grades will be awarded, and universities will honour offers on that basis. The current U6 are a low-birth rate year group so I don't think many universities will be oversubscribed, once everyone chooses their favourite of their offers. Those universities who over offer substantially and are generally a first choice (eg Cambridge) might have to run a ballot scheme.

Thinking about the new numbers is only natural in this situation unfortunately

TheFormidableMrsC · 05/03/2020 13:46

@usernameishistory

That still doesn't exclude the many over 50s with much younger dc

That's me. Autistic DS who turned 9 this week. I am 100% a single parent. It's worrying obviously. I'm taking all sensible precautions.

Skyejuly · 05/03/2020 13:46

I think about numbers alot. Not in a competition way. Just get focused on it.

NK346f2849X127d8bca260 · 05/03/2020 13:47

TheFormidableMrsC I can see why you are worried too, i am going to suggest he walks a bit more where possible,, i hadn't thought of that.

ShanghaiDiva · 05/03/2020 13:47

I agree predicting numbers is in poor taste. These are real people suffering from a virus with no vaccine, not a bloody guess the number game show.

KenAdams · 05/03/2020 13:47

I agree User. Matt Hancock on the other hand seems to think that we are. I think we are quite clearly at delay, but given that the government doesn't seem to have enacted any of the measures it should have done, I don't know what sort of increase in cases will make them do so.

I wonder if they will just be in a state of denial until tomorrow so they can implement all measures from Monday.

unluckyagain · 05/03/2020 13:48

I agree with others - the guessing at the number of victims is despicable.

Awkward1 · 05/03/2020 13:48

That will be the deaths is end of case. There are thousands still it many critically so it's say she risk + the percentage in your age bracket who should have been recovered but might die too.

usernameishistory · 05/03/2020 13:48

Why guess at the numbers though, unhelpful and pointless thread filling...to see if you're right?

Its based on nothing and pointless

Awkward1 · 05/03/2020 13:48

*ill

cjt110 · 05/03/2020 13:49

Forgive me if I am wrong, but the UK itself, whilst having c.85 cases, have not had any deaths on British soil so far?

DressingGownofDoom · 05/03/2020 13:50

Everyone is nervous about the numbers, many of us are waiting anxiously to hear. No need to argue about discussing it surely?

MyPartInHistory · 05/03/2020 13:51

I’m 60, and have a fairly high profile job involving commuting into London. I’m fascinated that i’m Included in those being advised to stay away from crowded places. I can’t simply say i’m Staying at home.

I also have 3 kids living at home, aged from low 20s to high teens - 2 still at school. I know lots of people around my age who still have kids at home/school aged kids.

Nicepud · 05/03/2020 13:51

Oh ffs it is only natural for people to be wondering what the numbers will be.

If you are moaning about it being like a morbid gameshow you are just being a dick. Take yourself off the thread if you can't handle normal speculation.

The numbers are important. What is the % increase since yesterday? Is still feasible to contain it?

What is with the influx of posters trying to 'police' the discission? I like these threads bit the determination of some to find offence in quite naturally human behaviour is getting boring.

ShanghaiDiva · 05/03/2020 13:52

Things are not very different in China: not everyone lives near their family, many older people are looked after by younger relatives, am not sure why people think it’s only the uk faced with childcare problems.

BoJoMoFo · 05/03/2020 13:52

Well said @Nicepud

usernameishistory · 05/03/2020 13:53

From following the numbers quoted on all the threads so far there seems to be a death at around the 40 cases mark, but after a delay obviously.

Skyejuly · 05/03/2020 13:53

That's how I feel @Nicepud

DressingGownofDoom · 05/03/2020 13:54

My employer, a large UK wide employer, has sent an update today explaining that regional managers have been asked to update their business continuity plans and outlying what we should do if schools are closed or if we have to work from home suddenly. Glad they're communicating with us on this.

TheFormidableMrsC · 05/03/2020 13:54

@NK346f2849X127d8bca260 I think it makes sense to avoid the tube as much as possible. My daughter said she watched somebody on the tube the other day sneeze, get a tissue, wipe her nose THEN HER HAND and then round her face and then chuck the tissue on the floor. It's that sort of irresponsible behaviour that spreads things. She said she gave the woman the look of death, as did others.

I think I need to stop reading this thread. It has frightened me. I am aware of the possibilities of what we are facing but other than what we as individuals can do to keep ourselves hygienic and safe, I am not sure what else we can do and I feel like I'm in an episode of The Walking Dead!

usernameishistory · 05/03/2020 13:55

The numbers are clearly important.

Calling people dicks is useless and facile.

There is a huge difference in worrying/wondering about numbers and writing guesses on a thread which serves no purpose. None, at all, other than to pointlessly fill the thread quicker.

Oakmaiden · 05/03/2020 13:55

The numbers are important.

Absolutely. But guessing what they are going to be does feel a little bit... frivolous. I dunno. Saying "I worry we are going to be over 100" sounds a bit more caring than "I reckon 111". Because they are not just numbers, are they?

DressingGownofDoom · 05/03/2020 13:55

The update is a bit later today.
