@Nicepud
Am perfectly capable of handling normal speculation and as someone who lives in China, have experience of numbers going up and more experience than most on here of what the consequences could be.

CrunchyCarrot · 05/03/2020 13:56

Agree with you, Nicepud.

We seem to be hovering on the Delay phase, the govt needs to get on with implementing the next part of their plan.

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 13:57

Of course people are interested in numbers for fs Hmm
It's all about the numbers. Thats what tells us where we all are with it. Some people's brains! Twisting this into glee at people being stuck down. I don't think there is a single person on these threads who doesn't think they will escape it.

ajandjjmum · 05/03/2020 13:57

Me too MyPartInHistory - feels really odd to be part of a 'vulnerable' group when I still think of myself as 'strong'.

cjt110 · 05/03/2020 13:58

IF schools were to shut, I wonder if the government would give some kind of parental leave to those who have to be at home with the child?

I am fortunate that I work in an office and have already asked the what if question to be told i could work from home. My husband however works in retail so if he had to be at home, he couldn't work from home and I assume would therefore lose pay?

I haven't seen anything about this anywhere

cjt110 · 05/03/2020 13:59

@DressingGownofDoom I think I read somewhere it is at 2pm?

Oakmaiden · 05/03/2020 13:59

Ok - Change of subject... how do hospitals normally cope with people with infectious diseases who need to be hospitalised? What treatment do the get which differs from those with non-infectious conditions?

usernameishistory · 05/03/2020 13:59

@TheFormidableMrsC
All you can ever do in life is what you can do, which will to a lesser or greater degree mitigate your risk, and you will mitigate it as best you can.

This happens with the flu, and cold viruses, every year. We dont, however, follow threads quoting deaths as they happen for that. We know it happens, but we've learnt to.just get on and take sensible precautions as best we can, like crossing the road.

After a while people do get weary of keep hearing and settle to a view but at the outset can be high anxiety inducing.

Hopefully though, you have learnt some risks and how to best keep yourself safe. If so then its been a helpful thread for that at least. Flowers

justchecking1 · 05/03/2020 14:00

Forgive me if I am wrong, but the UK itself, whilst having c.85 cases, have not had any deaths on British soil so far?

Not that we are currently aware of at any rate. However, many people will have died of viral pneumonia over the last couple of months. Many won't have been serotyped in any way, so we can't be totally sure

Gadareen · 05/03/2020 14:00

nicepud well said - sick of people trying to police threads and judging others, many of whom have very good reason to be worried about being sick with children to look after or elderly relatives, in the normal run of things. This situation is far from normal so FFS stop judging each other and keep supporting!

DressingGownofDoom · 05/03/2020 14:01

@cjt110 it is, past few days they've announced it a bit earlier though

TokyoSushi · 05/03/2020 14:02

It's late!

TreesSandSea · 05/03/2020 14:02

I think perhaps the issue with the thread getting a bit derailed is that those who have previously not necessarily been interested/ well informed are suddenly arriving and seeing all these discussions out of context. The context being that there has been some significant knowledge and analysis of the situation on here since late December.

Now it is starting to bite in terms of news outlets, more ‘new’ arrivals are joining without the background context of previous discussions. I can see how numbers prediction could appear morbid to those who don’t understand this.

usernameishistory · 05/03/2020 14:02

This thread has stopped receiving ongoing updates, and I can see why.

I hope you are ok and its not for any other reason. Flowers

cjt110 · 05/03/2020 14:02

For me, personally, my concern is if the schools close - what is the situation with regards to pay.

middleager · 05/03/2020 14:02

I agree. Of course I want to know the numbers.

Alone07 · 05/03/2020 14:03

Yesterday was late as well.

justchecking1 · 05/03/2020 14:03

Ok - Change of subject... how do hospitals normally cope with people with infectious diseases who need to be hospitalised? What treatment do the get which differs from those with non-infectious conditions?

Usually they get a side room on a ward and all staff wear aprons and gloves (not masks usually) before entering and remove them at the door. Hand washing.

If the infection spreads to the rest of the patients on the ward (pretty inevitable with something like norovirus) then the ward closes to visitors and non essential staff, and staff wear PPE when dealing with every patient, infected or not.

Newjez · 05/03/2020 14:03

I am very interested in the economy versus humanity argument. This isn't a compromise between money or lives. It's just a postponement of the costs, which may be far in excess of the costs of prevention. A stitch in time, or an ounce of prevention. How many proverbs do we need? If we can limit the impact to this, the costs should be lower overall, and we have the added bonus that we will save lives. Trying to save the economy at the cost of lives is and always will be a false economy. Just Google ford and the pinto.

Confirmed cases of the new coronavirus in the Netherlands have more than doubled to 82, according to Dutch health authorities. Source: Guardian

Lumene · 05/03/2020 14:04

The Coronavirus positive mental health thread is a good balance to this one. Also fact based and good for a sense of proportion (has been for me anyway!)

middleager · 05/03/2020 14:05

Well said Newjez

KenAdams · 05/03/2020 14:05

Wow that's a huge jump for the Netherlands. I think they had their first case a lot later than us didn't they?

ShanghaiDiva · 05/03/2020 14:06

@Springinsight
I think the action we take as individuals is the key. There are posters who update on every thread x new cases in Thailand, y cases in Spain. Etc. What is the point of This? We know the numbers are increasing outside China and that the measures China has taken are seeing a drop in new cases. Therefore instead of madly updating threads on mumsnet (which only seems to generate panic) think about what you (in general) plan to do: cancel holidays, not attend public events, looking at childcare alternatives, increase hygiene, avoid public transport. Not all of these options are available to everyone, but planning for what you would do is more useful than number speculation.
