Thank you, KenAdams for all your work.

What will you do when all these students return from their big bang trip then?

Will you isolate your ds from them?

Jrobhatch29 · 05/03/2020 12:48

At its peak in Wuhan, China, where the coronavirus emerged, 20% of the population were infected, and the numbers are now dropping. But China still has some robust control measures remaining to stop people moving about and infecting others. When those are lifted, it is possible the numbers could rise again, he said. The UK is planning for the worst case scenario, which is up to 80% infected, while hoping for the best, which would be 20%.

Can someone explain this from the guardian? How were 20% infected at the peak in wuhan. I thought wuhan had like 11 million people

Thank you ken
Please stick on these threads as your posts are really helpful.

Warehouses can clear out extremity fast if required too. The only reason for stock leaving slowly is haulage issues (most 3pls have at least one van of their own anyway and multiple contracts with lorries) or the product owner not being willing to settle their bill with the storage owner at which point warehouses lockdown and no stock is allowed to leave I till the bill is paid. If the product company own their own warehouses it haulage which is extremely poor planing.

KenAdams · 05/03/2020 12:50

@usernameishistory what do we do about GCSE and A Level exams then? Do we just tell those students that they will just have to start university next year so they're competing with two years of students rather than one for places? Or do they get the advantage above next years students, causing a knock on effect for years to come?

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 05/03/2020 12:51

This virus needs a collectivist response more like China. We actually need an authoritarian approach. But people are not used to that mindset

I think this is so true - people taking comfort from falling cases in China really shouldn't because we're not doing what they did. Our government really needs to be more aggressive if large numbers are not going to die.

I've no idea who would look after my residents if a large number of my team were out sick at once. We can't get enough staff as it is

There really wouldn't be anyone I think, sad though it is to say. Huge underfunding and existing staff shortages in care settings and the NHS will cause real problems if lots of people get this (and the trajectory is they will unless we have serious closures of schools, cinemas etc like Italy, China, Japan etc very soon to prevent spread) - the death toll will not only be those who get it but those vulnerable people who don't have anyone to care for them in the peak.

I don't want to be all doom and gloom about this - because I do think there is a lot we can do to prevent the worst (don't travel unless necessary, don't go to large gatherings unless necessary etc etc - lots of individual businesses are already putting in place these measures) but I really think the Government is not doing what it needs to here - and on top of an already seriously underfunded social care system, it's a toxic mix.

justchecking1 · 05/03/2020 12:51

I've had various clients asking about their liability if they send reluctant staff away on trips and the staff member gets ill today.

Hasa, I'd be really interested to know what your response was please

justchecking1 · 05/03/2020 12:52

Even Bob Geldof is wearing a face mask now, according to the Fail. Slebs are worried!

Hope he remembered to shave his beard! 😆

Furfockssake · 05/03/2020 12:53

If 20% being infected in the UK is best case scenario the public really need to start to understand the numbers. If 20% are infected, and 20% of those need some sort of medical care or hospitalisation - that's a predicted 2.65million people who will need help, most of which will need it within a three week period.

FaisPasCiFaisPasCa · 05/03/2020 12:53

Italy now has 95% bed occupancy. That's what we're starting with on a normal day, and ICU even higher.

cjt110 · 05/03/2020 12:53

@GPwife2411 Thank you

KenAdams · 05/03/2020 12:55

@OneForMeToo the issue in clearing the warehouse out is where we ship it too. Hospitals don't have unlimited storage so we can get them as much as they can store, but it can't be all they need so we need to keep on delivering.

Hand gel is the main issue for us at the moment. For example, in the event that we can get some stocks of hand gel it needs to be put into bottles that are manufactured in China. So we need to find a new plastic moulding supplier to create the bottles and then a factory with the capacity to fill them and then get them distributed. None of that is easy if countries keep stopping exports. We could find a factory here, but will we need to use that to manufacture drugs or PPE, or something else we can't get for example.

He's not wearing gloves, let's hope he managed to get some hand san from Budgens then.

FaisPasCiFaisPasCa · 05/03/2020 12:57

Draconian and aggressive are pejorative words which turn people off. Taking charge-safeguarding population-extraordinary measures. All very 1984 but language does matter.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 05/03/2020 12:57

@FaisPasCiFaisPasCa thats what terrifies me and why I cannot bear the “its just flu” brigade. Can’t see past the end of their own noses.

usernameishistory · 05/03/2020 12:57

I don't know what you expect me to say Ken but some of these gcse and a level students will feasibly lose their parent's if we just keep going

They will then be thinking fuck my a levels, I could have done them next year, my parents are dead and Im homeless with no family or means of support.

This is reality for many, especially where there's only one parent, and no extended family.

Many posters across all the many threads are scared of exactly this, there is only them, they often have sen or serious health conditions and depend entirely on their parent rwmaining alive.

I don't get the attitude tbh, towards parents rightly worrying about this. This is going to happen to some families and children becoming orphans.

usernameishistory · 05/03/2020 13:00

You do realise @KenAdams that there are dc already having to do this, are you telling them their lives are over because they weren't able to do GCSEs or A'levels in the year they'd have been scheduled to?

Outrageous.

Furfockssake · 05/03/2020 13:00

This is good news

*Repayment relief to be lined up for home owners
Home owners who fear falling behind on their mortgage payments because of coronavirus could be given a payment holiday or a bigger overdraft, according to the banking trade body.

Stephen Jones, chief executive of UK Finance said banks, building societies and credit card providers understand that some customers may be worried about the effect that contracting the coronavirus could have on their finances, for example due to a drop in income or because of unexpected expenses or bills to pay.

He said providers were ready to offer repayment relief for loan or mortgage repayments and increased overdrafts.

Our senior personal finance reporter Sam Meadows reports that the announcement is understood to go above and beyond banks’ usual policies on supporting customers in financial difficulty*

GPwife2411 · 05/03/2020 13:00

Struggling with DH's job at the moment. He and colleagues basically accept that they are going to get exposed, sooner rather than later, and he has told me that he expects to pass it on to the rest of us.

I realise he is just being very blunt and honest but I find it pretty anxiety-inducing to say the least. The only protective equipment he has is the Wickes mask and goggles I bought for him. And I think they might finally be getting a delivery of alcohol gel.

I sometimes wonder if there is any point in me being careful with exposure, washing children's uniforms etc. when ultimately we're 'doomed' (to be said in a Scottish accent).

I'm not being hysterical about this, this is what he's actually said and I've no reason to believe it's not a rational assessment of the situation because why would it not be? He is very matter of fact and almost jovial about it although I suppose he wouldn't be the person having to potentially look after 4 children, including a baby and a type 1 diabetic, on her own whilst potentially ill herself!

Can anyone offer any words of wisdom on how to come to a place of calm about this element that is completely outside my control?

KenAdams · 05/03/2020 13:02

@usernameishistory no, obviously not but it's not fair on them if they have to compete with double the number of students for a university place is it? If I was a student, I'd be looking at the government to come up with a solution.

SistemaAddict · 05/03/2020 13:03

Lack of beds is worrying. I used to work at the Hallamshire in Sheffield. I think we had 6 ITU beds. It was a long time ago now and that might have changed. We also had infectious diseases wards where patients were isolated. Not many beds on those either due to the ward layout. My local hospital doesn't have an infectious diseases ward and there's not many ITU beds either although I can't remember exactly how many.
So many people are being very shortsighted about this and not seeing the implications at all beyond the end of their own nose.

Oakmaiden · 05/03/2020 13:03

people taking comfort from falling cases in China really shouldn't because we're not doing what they did.

In fairness we haven't reached the same stage/level of community transmission that China had when they brought in their stringent measures.

Not that I think our Govt has the will or ability to duplicate the Chinese methods.

Reastie · 05/03/2020 13:05

Very interesting thread. Thank you for the 80% thing. Fascinating, as I had been taken in by the govt. comments of ‘its only a bad cold’. It’s much more than that clearly and by the looks of things we’re being spun a lie to keep us from over panicking even more.

This map is really good for plotting numbers etc here .

Can I ask if anyone has any knowledge or stats on babies getting it? I have a baby who I’m worried about. All I can find is it’s worst for the over 60s and vulnerable. Is a baby vulnerable? He puts everything in his mouth when we go out and it’s tricky to wash a babies hands! Also I question how often the toys at baby classes etc are cleaned.

usernameishistory · 05/03/2020 13:05

You are in the same boat as many GPswife

What can be said other than take all the precautions you can

I exposed my doctor to it potentially but as a patient I didnt breath in the.dirsction of the GP, hands were washed, surfaces were not touched.

Patients need to follow protocols too in my.view
