South Africa reports first case of coronavirus t.co/eUoE2b20hL

NotAWomxn · 05/03/2020 12:36

Thanks @copperstrike76 and @LarkDescending.

It's hard from that list of symptoms to get much idea of what a "mild" case is, for instance. Feel like we don't even know what we're looking out for...

AvocadoOwl · 05/03/2020 12:36

Friends of mine have a trade stand at Crufts every year; they have just decided today that they are pulling out. I suspect they'll have lost a lot of money by doing so (not just the high price of having a stand there but lost revenue too) but they are in a high risk age bracket so I think they are being very sensible.

I suspect with more and more big sponsors and smaller stands pulling out Crufts is not going to be 'business as usual' regardless of whether they open doors to the public.

cjt110 · 05/03/2020 12:36

Has anyone seen which category this has been put into? As in Influenza type A etc? I ask because my son, despite having had his flu vaccine, was very poorly before christmas and tested for flu which came back as type A influenza - same as swine flu and bird flu I believe - where the can give tamiflu to assist?

LarkDescending · 05/03/2020 12:37

South Africa’s first case had recently visited Italy as part of a group of 10, so there may be more to come there.

Babyfairy0923 · 05/03/2020 12:37

@ploppityplop thank you- I suspect I will be over there in the not so distant future

ofwarren · 05/03/2020 12:38

Greece confirms 21 new cases of coronavirus; total of 31 t.co/eUoE2b20hL

LarkDescending · 05/03/2020 12:39

cjt110 It isn’t any type of influenza. A coronavirus is quite different and there are no antivirals with proven effectiveness against this new one (though some are being tried against it).

ploppityplop · 05/03/2020 12:39

I`m not saying "pull your kids out of school!" , but if/ when you do choose to/ schools close potentially, the home edders can help steer you in the right direction? There are options .......

FaisPasCiFaisPasCa · 05/03/2020 12:40

cjt

It's called a Coronavirus. There are several causing disease in humans from colds to SARS in severity. It's not related to Flu virus but has some similarities in the symptoms, although this one is generally lot more severe than flu with a 10-20 or maybe more higher death rate.

Spacecadetagain · 05/03/2020 12:40

@Peridot1 Thank you 🙂 yes my four year old son is now also 18 and the baby is 15 .. it’s scary how long we’ve been on here . I never thought I’d see myself on a thread like this I have to say 😕

KenAdams · 05/03/2020 12:40

@cjt110 - the risk is low at the moment with only 90 confirmed cases. Therefore its best to spend that time and resource on contingency planning now, otherwise the people that need to make those plans will be off work themselves to look after their children. Medical staff and those that provide medical supplies will need to do the same. Closing schools isn't that easy - the implications are massive and will effect a number of departments and sectors.

A good example is a warehouse that ships out PPE. Those people can't work from home. Therefore, it's best to use them to ship out large stocks now while the risk is low rather than trying to work out how to do that when the risk is higher and individuals are likely to refuse to go into work, or they can't go to work because they need to be at home to look after their children. What do we do then? Let nurses treat positive patients without PPE who are at a much greater risk of being infected than Simon who works in a warehouse and hasn't been in contact with a positive case?

cjt110 · 05/03/2020 12:42

@KenAdams Fair point. I hadn't thought of it that way.

middleager · 05/03/2020 12:43

Thanks Ken
And ofwarren

I do wish the language would change though. PM on This Morning using 'draconian' again.
I don't think this is helpful.

cjt110 · 05/03/2020 12:43

@LarkDescending @FaisPasCiFaisPasCa Thank you for clarifying... what is the corona part for? as in what's it named after - sorry if these seem rudimentary questions. Trying to get a hold of it

QuietlyTerrified · 05/03/2020 12:43

Its a killer cold, I am calling it.

yolofish · 05/03/2020 12:44

Even Bob Geldof is wearing a face mask now, according to the Fail. Slebs are worried! Grin (sorry, moment of levity...)

usernameishistory · 05/03/2020 12:44

School closures for example - once you start closing them, parents will be putting pressures on other schools to close and the LEA's will need to have a plan in place as to how these children will be taught from home, consider things such as the impact on vulnearable children etc. All this takes time so you need to be able to have enough time to properly prepare for this.

This balanced again a rapid exponential increase in new cases with hospitals already at near capacity with winter flu season, and suffering years of underfunding, insufficient stocks, and serious/critically ill and fatalities.

So, um...how do we teach children if schools close -v- epidemic proportion disease with high levels of critical illness and death?

Its a nonsense.

Like its nonsense to not close a business for a couple of days whilst a test is done awaiting results, business can reopen if negative, or stay shut short term then open when clear?

Number12 · 05/03/2020 12:45

Are any of your schools still planning on going to the Big Bang science fair at NEC? Our school is and I think its so stupid. They had 62,000 kids there last year, 80,000 total and are still saying they plan to go ahead with it this year.

I've told my ds he can't go, I didn't think was responsible and it looks brilliant, its such a shame. My ds and dh Didn't disagree with me.

usernameishistory · 05/03/2020 12:45

Corona virus been around long term

So named becausenof the way the virus looks

GPwife2411 · 05/03/2020 12:45

@cjt110 - corona related to the 'crown'-like appearance of the outside of this class of viruses.

KenAdams · 05/03/2020 12:46

I haven't said so far on these threads, but I work in the management of government supply chains. We have a huge job ahead of us right now and we are trying. We are working all hours to keep things moving and to keep people safe. We are trying to create alternative supply chains which is so difficult as every day a new countries stops exports of things we need.

People see MP's paying lip service on the news but us ordinary folk are working extremely hard behind the scenes I promise :)

MC50 · 05/03/2020 12:46

@AutumnCrow - You’re very welcome. I came across his vids by accident just when the spread was starting In Italy (the total number of infected people was 16 for the whole country - 21st Feb) whereas this morning (5th Mar) it was 3,089, with 107 deaths and 276 “recovered”. There are also many people in the city where I live, so you can understand it’s very close to home for me. While it’s far away you tend to hope it won’t get to you, but all it needs is one person!!! People are berating Italy, saying so-and-so brought it back from Northern Italy, but where did we get it from? Someone with contacts in China??? And where did the Chinese get it from? I believe it was transmitted first from bats to animals, and then to humans, and now from humans to humans, although the scientists aren’t 100% certain of this... Don’t mistreat the Chinese all over the world because the disease SEEMS to have originated there, don’t mistreat the Italians because someone caught the virus on holiday - poor so-and-so’s, look at all the people they’ve lost through no fault of their own. Be proactive, be kind, and above all be careful. Stay safe people and as Dr. Campbell says Wash Your Hands
