with double the number of students for a university place is it? If I was a student, I'd be looking at the government to come up with a solution.

The govt will come up with something. The alternative (having an extra year in sixth form and universities not having a 2020 cohort is unworkable.

usernameishistory · 05/03/2020 13:08

Out of all the deaths there is only one recent case of a baby losing their life (despite all the obvious desperate attempts that babies commonly make to catch everything they can!).

This particular baby death wasnt straightforward as it was premie, sadly, and potentially other underlying challenges also.

KenAdams · 05/03/2020 13:08

Exactly @Oakmaiden. These are the sort of issues we are all working towards in the background. I don't work on the education side myself btw, I was just using it as an example.

Lumene · 05/03/2020 13:08

That sounds tough GPwife

The Coronavirus positive mental health thread is worth reading. Still fact based but focusing on the positive. Reading it has made me feel a lot better and balances some of the worst case scenario stuff.

Definitely worth the hygiene measures I would say - anything that slows or reduces spread is more than worth it.

Letseatgrandma · 05/03/2020 13:10

Have any of the scientists involved theorised why not many children seem to be affected? Is it because schools elsewhere have been closed as a preemptive move?

usernameishistory · 05/03/2020 13:11

Not having a 2020 cohort? Not workable? The only alternative?

There are many ways around, but how do you get orphaned homeless students through this?

Reastie · 05/03/2020 13:11

Thank you usernamehistory.

There is a huge difference in china, massive extended families. Impact on dc is bad, but not like here where many are very isolated from family or dont have family, or are already supporting the very ill, like older parents more at risk.

Many pp have very valid concerns about what will happen to their dc. Frankly I dont care whether 2020 would actually end up not having a new cohort, not in the face of that. But they will.

Alone07 · 05/03/2020 13:14

He told ITV's This Morning programme: "One of the theories is perhaps you could take it on the chin, take it all in one go and allow the disease to move through the population without really taking as many draconian measures. I think we need to strike a balance." Borris actually said that wtf!!

I know we need to keep the economy going to a certain extent.
But to cost a lot of people there lives.

KenAdams · 05/03/2020 13:14

@Letseatgrandma I seem to remember something being said about them having less receptors in their lungs but I don't even know what that means in a medical sense. Hopefully someone with more medical knowledge will be along soon to explain.

AvocadoOwl · 05/03/2020 13:15

I've been catching up on the figures and Germany has 182 new cases today?! Yikes.

Babyfairy0923 · 05/03/2020 13:16

Predictions for new numbers today? I’m thinking it’ll be high, 150

DrivingMsCrazy · 05/03/2020 13:17

Watching Matt Hancock live, saying schools to stay open, so I expect they'll all be shut by Monday

@AutumnCrow I know this is a serious thread but your deadpan humour in this post made me snort laughing in a knowing way. He's so utterly useless isn't he?

Cheeseismylife · 05/03/2020 13:18

@Reastie this is a bit different to the Christmas prep threads Sad (I've name changed so you won't recognise my name from there).

Are you breastfeeding? If so la leche have some decent info about bf and coronavirus.

GPwife2411 There should be a support forum somewhere on the web for UK spouses and partners of medics! I'm sure that UK doctors have somewhere online that they can go to, although perhaps that's just a WhatsApp group of the friends and colleagues. I'm going away with my best friend this weekend, - she's a GP - and I can't help feeling that she may let her hair down quite a bit/be more frank than normal. It feels like the calm before the storm. I can just be a sounding board!

Alib838 · 05/03/2020 13:19

Last week I had a chest infection. On the third evening when my breathing was heavier I remembered I had some oregano oil. Two-three drops under the tongue and within a couple of minutes a significant improvement. Have taken it a couple of times a day since. Maybe one to get in the cupboard for the GP's wife? Just Googled it very quickly and it came up with "A 2017 study found that oregano essential oil, especially from the leaves of the oregano plant, has strong antioxidant properties. While carvacrol was more effective against certain viruses on its own, oregano oil was more effective against respiratory viruses, such as flu viruses. Hope this might help someone.

CarrotVan · 05/03/2020 13:20

For University admissions you could cancel A-Level exams and use predicted grades

Then use flexible online learning models for teaching and assessment delivery.

For students on programme already you covert all courses that can be delivered online to that learning mode thereby reducing numbers on campus to clinical and laboratory courses.

Not all universities can do this and some will go bust though

NaturalBornWoman · 05/03/2020 13:22

If I was a student, I'd be looking at the government to come up with a solution.

Sadly an awful lot of people who think that the government should be able to come up with a magical solution to everything are about to get a shock. This is unprecedented and no government could save you from the ramifications which will be profound. Re the exam results I'm sure they'll come up with something.

usernameishistory · 05/03/2020 13:22

Head to toe washing when getting home and shedding work clothes, hanging outer clothes in warm space/airing cupboard/spare bedroom/cupboard.

I have never routinely used bleach or been overboard about stress disinfecting type cleaning, but I think it's wholly reasonable now to keep outdoor clothes for outdoors and to wash and change upon arrival home.

To be very careful not to touch surfaces and to keep your hands to yourself, especially to have extra consideryaround GPs and health workers generally who are facing the public all day.

The same with till workers.

It was beyond me many threads ago why basics like till workers having gloves hasnt been done.

crispycracker · 05/03/2020 13:22

@KenAdams

"the risk is low at the moment with only 90 confirmed cases. Therefore its best to spend that time and resource on contingency planning now"

I appreciate this but why is that a county like UAE that has fewer cases than us has just managed to close schools for 4 weeks.
I doubt there will be civil unrest.

Why does everything have to be so slow here. We have seen this coming since early Jan.

cjt110 · 05/03/2020 13:23

Forgive me if I am wrong, but the UK itself, whilst having c.85 cases, have not had any deaths on British soil so far?

NK346f2849X127d8bca260 · 05/03/2020 13:25

I am really worried about my nearly 19 year old son, he has had numerous chest infections to the point they tested him for CF three years ago, turns out he is just a carrier, he has been well for over a year now though. He works in North London, doing an apprenticeship so uses trains and a tube journey, he tells me i am fussing! He is good at hand washing and does carry hand gel, but obviously can't get any of that from anywhere now.

KenAdams · 05/03/2020 13:27

Unfortunately I'm not sure why other governments work differently to ours - we could speculate all day but we are where we are. I don't know why every decision has been made either, I'm just speculating based on the processes being used for my small piece of the puzzle.

What are peoples thoughts re the 2pm update? I suspect over 140 cases today given the numbers yesterday. I really hope it's not more than that.

LightsOnNotIn · 05/03/2020 13:27

GPwife2411 And I should add - I thought that if my partner came down with CV, that me and my son would also get it. But I read yesterday that it is not inevitable. On a Reddit Q&A thread with medics. I think they said that a study of families with it found that all of them got the virus in only 10% of cases.

www.reddit.com/r/Coronavirus/comments/fdf5fq/we_are_a_team_of_medical_experts_following/

The question asked was: 'is it possible to stay uninfected if a member of your household comes down with it or is it inevitable?'

Answer: 'It is possible to stay uninfected! Yesterday in a press briefing, Dr. Nancy Messonnier at the CDC said that the secondary attack rate among family members of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the U.S. is 10.5% so far. So that means that about 1 in 10 family members who have been exposed by a relative have gotten sick.'

BoJoMoFo · 05/03/2020 13:28

I'm thinking around the 150 mark...
