@SuckingDieselFella I said LOCATIONS I didnt say anything about figures. Nice try though.

My parents are in their 80s and get all their news from TV and newspapers. They wouldnt know where to start with online. Thats all i meant. Or do you think they have less right to know so they can plan by dint of their age.

And the way ive seen pensioners talked about on this site its hardly surprising that people have drawn their own conclusions about the feelings towards the over 60s in this country.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 04/03/2020 23:14

If the experts didn't think closing schools and cinemas and theatres wouldn't slow the spread (at least, if not reduce total number of cases) then Italy wouldn't be doing it, because economically it's a bit suicidal. So I expect the experts behind the scenes are the ones pushing for this. Aggressive containment has worked in Singapore, it's a shame our government is so late to follow suit.

I do think reducing travel will help prevent spread, and keeping kids off school too. And honestly, I think people should be doing this because though many people might make it through the vulnerable may well die, especially if hospitals become overloaded with cases very fast, and really is someone else's health less important than a face to face vs skype meeting, or going to a concert, the cinema or on holiday?

I think people are in denial, their world is being turned upside down and they don't want to admit it could be as bad as it is. But it is. Look at China, look at Italy. It's serious.

That doesn't mean we should panic, but it does mean we should take sensible measures NOW rather than when it's already too late. Why people are even debating going on holiday is beyond me. Travel = spread of disease. Far more so than staying home, just in terms of the number of people you'll have close contact with.

@Wehttam

You've had your fun.

Now give over.

This thread peaked at 11.

Furfockssake · 04/03/2020 23:16

I don't know why anyone is in any doubt about what the Government are doing - their plan is literally on their website. They think they won't contain it much longer, then they are going to try and delay the peak until the summer - and the delaying tactics are 1. wash hands 2. don't be near people who cough and sneeze and 3. stay away from crowds. Then if that doesn't work to slow the spread they will shut down schools and take more drastic measures so that they try not to overwhelm the NHS.

HeIenaDove · 04/03/2020 23:16

YY And if its a biological weapon its a fucking stupid illogical impractical one.

attatiti · 04/03/2020 23:16

Red I think is bang on the money there 👀

Nope, Red has taken leave of their senses.

Furfockssake · 04/03/2020 23:18

they are expecting people to die, they have told the over 60s to stay out of harm's way, and they have told everyone there will be difficult choices and things we won't like happening. What else do we need to know?

SuckingDieselFella · 04/03/2020 23:18

@ofwarren Uprising Today is hardly an objective source.

"Below are the official editorial policies of the Yemen Resistance Watch Network. We anticipate to edit the policies regularly, to fit with time and political change in the landscape.
The YRW is committed to protect the interests of the Yemeni Republic, its people and its revolution through the use of media, journalism and content-creating.
The YRW stands in full solidarity with the September 21st Revolution of 2014, and the current struggle against the forces of aggression.
The YRW is staunchly anti-imperialist. We are against the bloody and deadly expansionist policies of the western superpowers and their puppet states across the globe."

Furfockssake · 04/03/2020 23:19

They don't know what the exact changes will be because they don't know how good other countries will be at containing the virus, and we're not going to lock down our country, much as no other country is likely to totally lock down. They may lock down areas to slow the spread, but that's it.

RedToothBrush · 04/03/2020 23:20

Thing is that what our natural instincts are: banning international travel and closing schools, may not be effective at this point when looked at scientifically due to human behaviour.

Kids off school are not necessarily going to stay home and not socialise. And they may end up having more contact with the most vulnerable groups if extended family becomes the child care solution. So you get extended family transmission rather than nuclear family transmission for example.

Then there's the staffing issues and the income issues which through up all sorts of other potentially fatal indirect outcomes.

As for international travel. That ship has sailed. Too late.

Furfockssake · 04/03/2020 23:22

The reason they will lock down schools in certain areas with outbreaks is because children will pass the virus amongst each other which will be taken back to parents which will mean more parents are off work which means a negative affect on the economy - and we can't all survive unless our economy survives. This is all in their action plan.

Nicepud · 04/03/2020 23:23

We are all grownups right? If your mental state can't handle a little (lets face it, most of the thread/s is factual) speculation then switch off mn.

It's nothing I haven't heard in real life, people are getting anxious. Disagree and move on the converstaion.

No need to start tearing chunks out of each other or censoring topics (red you seem to be getting singled out a lot by some, I personally enjoy your posts)

Wehttam · 04/03/2020 23:23

So much more fur such as what happens if you get a severe case that isn’t immediately fatal? Why is there such a drastic reaction if most cases are mild? How likely is it you can catch it again with what consequences?

HeIenaDove · 04/03/2020 23:24

I like Reds posts too.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 04/03/2020 23:25

@SisterAgatha agreed.

Furfockssake · 04/03/2020 23:25

@Langbannedforsafeguardingkids I imagine as soon as other countries had outbreaks which spiralled out of control with community transmission our scientists here knew we weren't going to contain it in the long run. It kind of now has to run its course, and the best thing we can do is keep vulnerable people out of the way of it.

RedToothBrush · 04/03/2020 23:25

Nope, Red has taken leave of their senses.

If conspiracy theories want to go there, they should at least do it properly.

In reality, this government is more incompetent than it is malicious. And that's ultimately where thoughts of 'winners' and losers should begin and end.

It's a naturally occurring virus that is long overdue and governments who have had years to research SARs didn't. And they didn't have a coherent and cohesive Containment plan. International cooperation has largely been lacking (see the decision to withdraw from all EU organisations including the one relating to pandemic early warning). There are many many missed opportunities through inaction, complacency and good old fashioned idiocy.

Wehttam · 04/03/2020 23:25

Nicepud agree! Convos here are no different than IRL

MarshaBradyo · 04/03/2020 23:26

It’s not affecting my mental health I think it’s a pity if the thread goes that way. Prefer facts. Red was joking around now I see. Others weren’t I guess.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/03/2020 23:26

No biological weapon would target the old & the sick:
it would target the young, especially children to cause extra panic

This is 100% a natural disaster, arising from some terrible practices at live markets in China
and spreading rapidly because of how the world is so interconnected

Hopefully the Chinese regime will be able to effectively bring the hammer down on such markets and implement food hygiene laws

  • so the world doesn't go through this shit yet again
Furfockssake · 04/03/2020 23:27

@Wehttam that's surely something the scientists are working on and we will find out when they find out, but it's not part of a Government pandemic preparedness plan as it's too specific to the particular virus. And in terms of getting a severe case which isn't fatal or immediately fatal - that's why they're truing to delay the onset by slowing down the rate of infection to let our NHS have the best chance of treating people who do have severe cases

Dusty01 · 04/03/2020 23:28

Does any else not wonder that if, according to sites like Worldometer there are just over around 50,000 people worldwide who have recovered from this virus why there are so few being interviewed or giving accounts of their experience of the illness?

This was posted ages ago by RhodaCamel - Yes I am very worried by this. What would be the reason?

usernameishistory · 04/03/2020 23:28

Sorry but I was surprised at red s pp.

Hadn't commented but was a bit Hmm about the conspiracy theory, ans whether it was tongue in cheek or something.

Ive been taking about the transmission not being what people are panicking it is since two threads or more ago.

However.....

GPs are no longer testing....

So we don't know anymore...
