who’d have thought the most in demand commodity in 2020 would be hand sanitizer. Wait until it goes behind the till because of shoplifting or mass grab and runs. Rubber gloves will be next.

SouthwarkRoad · 04/03/2020 13:09

I WFH. My team has just had all its in-person London meetings cancelled for the next 2 months. This is a big deal.

Spacecadetagain · 04/03/2020 13:09

Ocado are running a deal at the moment on the first shop money off and free delivery so that may have contributed

Banana0pancakes · 04/03/2020 13:09

Totally agree wehttam, this whole thing feels surreal!

MissPoldark · 04/03/2020 13:11

Why haven’t shops got enough in

Because they are not restricting sales. one person can clear the whole shelf.

Lovetodream · 04/03/2020 13:12

My company is working as normal, we’re based in Central London next to a busy tourist destination. They’ve stocked all
Offices with hand sanitizers and cleansing wipes but no other precautions. Have other workplaces started taking measures it is it BAU for now?

SpencerReidsMistress · 04/03/2020 13:13

Just a thought if anyone needs hand sanitiser. Has anyone tried their local chemist? I managed to get some and think it's because of the whole people are hitting larger scale shops rather than the small chemists.

Lovetodream · 04/03/2020 13:13

Meant to ask is it BAU in London offices?

SouthwarkRoad · 04/03/2020 13:13

Have other workplaces started taking measures it is it BAU for now?

DH's workplace they're still going in but anyone with any cold or flu symptoms at all has been told to WFH, even if they haven't been to affected areas or in contact with cases.

strawberrylipgloss · 04/03/2020 13:14

Our local Boots is restricting to 2 items per customer

Alone07 · 04/03/2020 13:14

Your best bet to get sanitizer is small shops like a small co-op.
That's where I was able to get a couple, I do think they should limit on a couple for each person.
A lot of people are selling them for outrageous prices on the internet.

TheHagOnTheHill · 04/03/2020 13:14

There was lots of preping for SARS in hospitals for high care areas and ITU because of the high death rate.
Hospitals seem mainly to have set up pods for screening suspected cases. There isn't even a program to ramp up mask fitting or updating staff on isolation nursing.
Maybe the situation in larger cities is different.

crispycracker · 04/03/2020 13:14

Biophysics professor at Johns Hopkins University, Dr Karen Fleming, explained why simple hand-washing is so effective.

"Coronavirus is an 'enveloped' virus, which means that it has an outer lipid membrane layer," she tweeted.

"Basically, it's surrounded by a fat layer. Washing your hands with soap and water has the ability to 'dissolve' this greasy fatty layer and kill the virus."

SistemaAddict · 04/03/2020 13:14

About time with the schools in Italy. Although children don't seem to as affected there's all that intermingling at drop off and pick up and any social events. I'm just catching up as I've been gardening all morning.

SouthwarkRoad · 04/03/2020 13:14

In fact one of his colleagues turned up with a cold the other day and was immediately sent home by management.

Springsnake · 04/03/2020 13:15

Do we need to be buying masks ...
What is the official line on if they make a difference

Wehttam · 04/03/2020 13:18

Love my workplace started end of January because i was being very vocal about the protocol China had followed. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to read between the lines that it would get here eventually. We started early but the ‘its The flu’ brigade scoffed.

EgonSpengler2020 · 04/03/2020 13:19

There isn't even a program to ramp up mask fitting or updating staff on isolation nursing.

That's just not true.

The NHS trust I work in has assigned all staff who are currently on light duties to fit testing, and this has been going on for a few weeks now. Majority of staff have been done now.

TowerRingInferno · 04/03/2020 13:19

Ocado problems might depend on where you live? I’ve just done an order and almost everything was in stock. No hand sanitiser or cheap paracetamol but everything else I wanted was there.

My local florist is selling the tiny bottles of hand sanitiser for £3 and doing a roaring trade.

JayDot500 · 04/03/2020 13:20

Had to go to the GP surgery this morning for ongoing BP management. A man and woman who knew each other were having a loud yapping session for all to hear.

Learned that the man had a cough and a bit of a temperature, but he wasn't there for those reasons. He was totally dismissing the 'scaremongering'. He called it a loud of fluff, and since coronavirus 'only survives for one minute outside of the body', he's not worried. The woman then proceeds to tell him she's got the flu and they chat about '...all the fuss people are making over nothing'. Then the man started coughing and they sniggered about it. They were still in the waiting area after my appointment. Many other people had come in and were darting evil eyes towards them. One lady was obviously disgusted. An older couple who were sitting near to them had moved to the other side of the room (the man was now sat on my chair).

So yeah . Even if the government got serious about containment, people are shit.

BoJoMoFo · 04/03/2020 13:21

NC for various reasons... Been lurking and occasionally commenting on this and previous threads from the beginning...

Any guesses for the 2pm update? I'd be surprised if it was less than 70 total...

woodencoffeetable · 04/03/2020 13:21

Do we need to be buying masks ..

many sources say no. they do not protect you, they protect others. if they don't fit well or get damp from breathing they are quite ineffective.
it's better to keep a distance and to keep washing hands.

Wehttam · 04/03/2020 13:21

eBay and anywhere else online with inflated prices for hand sanitizer should ban the sellers immediately.

ClashCityRocker · 04/03/2020 13:22

Our office are asking anyone who has been anywhere near or has family in the same household who has been anyway near an affected area to self-isolate for fourteen days - can wfh if they are able to and currently will be paid.

Those heading off on holiday in the near future are being asked to take laptops etc home before they go in case the situation changes.

Justaboy · 04/03/2020 13:22

@Justaboy a number of people have posted this purporting to be from someone they know. A lot of it is bollocks too. Drinking warm water and avoiding cold drinks will not help.....nor will drinking lots of water....common sense

LOL!¬ that came to me from someone who was a grad from Trinity college Cambridge!!

He has bene duly chastised:!
