I also think many of us might have had this already. I am just recovering from a severe respiratory bug, but was not considered a coronavirus candidate because I hadn't travelled so wasn't tested. Back to work soon, and back on the tube, which is where I very likely caught whatever I've just had in the first place.

Surely this virus must be already lurking on the tube? It's crammed daily with people from all over the world, and it seems beyond the bounds of possibility that none of them have visited any of the CV hotspots. When you're jammed nose to nose with strangers so tight you can't even turn around, the advice to "step away from anyone coughing" is just a joke.

Does anyone know if they have done any random swabbing of poles, seats, door buttons etc on tube trains?

Reallybadidea · 04/03/2020 09:57

I really don't believe that there is currently any widespread transmission in the UK, or if there is, then it is very recent. You would expect an increase in severe viral pneumonias and this doesn't seem to be happening. Yet.

In addition a number of hospitals and GP surgeries throughout the country have been testing everyone who presents with flu-like symptoms for over a week now. Again, no positive results as yet, as far as I can tell.

BiBiBirdie · 04/03/2020 09:58

@Fundrum yes it does include the 9 original including super spreader in Brighton. I think when we have more cases they will say X have been confirmed Y have recovered and (although hopefully not) Z deaths.

peridito · 04/03/2020 10:02

I think this must be about the millioneth time I've mentioned it ,but I'm still v keen to know outcome of testing in the 8 hospital trusts + 100 GP surgeries .

Started 26 Feb and testing nos surely not included in daily updates as would be the numbers would surely be greater than the nos of additional tests reported yesterday which was what 400?

ChipotleBlessing · 04/03/2020 10:04

With regard to why people aren’t giving interviews after recovering. Superspreader Steve did and was rewarded with widespread criticism, the nickname and his face everywhere as the man who was infecting everyone. It’s not bloody surprising no one else wants to talk.

FourTeaFallOut · 04/03/2020 10:04

Yes, I don't think there is any widespread transmission here yet either. I'm quietly optimistic that there was no community transmission at that packed bus conference - I'm not sure if that is false hope but from the positive cases that we have more details about it seems like living in the same place, even if just temporary, with the infected patient has been the main transmission situation, not just a matter of being the unlucky bastard to touch the door knob of the infected person who preceded you.

WaterSheep · 04/03/2020 10:04

surely not included in daily updates as would be the numbers would surely be greater than the nos of additional tests reported yesterday which was what 400?

I also wondered about this.

CrunchyCarrot · 04/03/2020 10:07

In the supermarket today I over heard a women telling the check out operater that corona virus is something only Chinese people get because of their genetics. I don't know if she thinks that Italy and Iran are in China. This is the level of ignorance we are dealing with.

Yes I came across this yesterday myself, a post on another forum asserting that Han Chinese are more likely to get CV than Europeans due to genetics. I can find nothing academic to support this. I did ask them to provide a link to research and what about Italy and Iran?

Skyejuly · 04/03/2020 10:08

What do we expect numbers to be today?

ChipotleBlessing · 04/03/2020 10:09

I think that might be based on early research about Ace2 receptors? But that was about seriousness of cases, not actual transmission.

WaterSheep · 04/03/2020 10:10

What do we expect numbers to be today?

We're currently at 53. I suspect we might be just over 70 when the announcement is made.

WaterSheep · 04/03/2020 10:11

The London Book Fair, a huge event in the publishing industry and due to take place between 10-12 March, has been cancelled.

CrunchyCarrot · 04/03/2020 10:11

I think 70-ish is a fair guess as the numbers diagnosed each day are rising. Expect it to be into the 100s by next week.

VivaLeBeaver · 04/03/2020 10:13

I've just had a meeting with someone external who says her boss has been exposed to coronavirus and has been told to isolate

VivaLeBeaver · 04/03/2020 10:15

I read a medical article I think in the lancet hypothesising that Asian people might be more severely affected. Yes it mentioned ace receptors. Whether it's right, I have no idea.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 04/03/2020 10:21

Someone said that test results can be 6 days so we’re at least 6 days behind on figures.

On another note, heres a link to David Abels Vlog, they've been retested as positive after recovering. (Couple from cruise ship)

This is really interesting. Apparently 80% of cases in japan have not passed the virus on to anyone else

The positive case in Cumbria is NHS staff

Reallybadidea · 04/03/2020 10:24

I couldn't tell you whether the sentinel and GP hospital testing is included. I do believe that any positive results would be included in the figures. From experience initial tests do not take as long as 6 days to come back, but at least some people are being tested multiple times so may take a while to get the final results.

GPwife2411 · 04/03/2020 10:24

@perdito I have been wondering that too. My very wild guess is that when we see cases with no travel history, and no clear close contact transmission, in the community, those are likely to have been picked up by the sentinel practices? Could be wrong.

Looks like superdrug has this hand sanitizer in stock for delivery of that helps anyone (they were all out of stock yesterday)...I don't know what alcohol percentage it is. www.superdrug.com/Skin/Hand-Care/Hand-Gel/Superdrug-Strawberry-&-Rasberry-Sanitiser-Hand-Gel-100ml/p/729274

@Apricotfool

To PP questioning why paramedics would wear gloves/masks when attending a fall or whatever

There are several problems in the pre hospital environment which make us particularly vulnerable.

The only information we get prior to entering a property is what the patient or relative chooses or remembers to tell the call taker. Even face to face with direct questioning I've had a patient with a mildly raised temperature 'forget' to mention he was on (as in last few weeks) chemotherapy for lymphatic cancer (his wife also failed to mention it). It was only when I discussed the case by phone with a gp with a view to discharging at home that she highlighted this from his gp notes. He went into hospital as a possible neutropenic sepsis (a potentially and rapidly fatal condition). Obviously that is an extreme example of lack of awareness/self education but this is what we are up against, we are often going in very blind.

We are going into non clinical environments to people with varying hygiene practices. Rather than a patient entering a pre prepared environment in a hospital or clinic. I've written entire patient records with the clipboard balanced on my knee as there was not a single clear or clean surface to write it on.

Elderly people frequently present as falls when starting with an infection, also acute confusion, or being unable to get out of bed/chair/off toilet can be signs of deterioration caused by infection.

swingchandelier · 04/03/2020 10:33

Tests are not taking 6 days. I know of two people tested and they came back within 24/48 hrs max

Apparently Northumbria University is working on a breathalyser to immediately diagnose coronavirus.
