@Horehound confirmation of new cases IS breaking news, whether they were expected or not

ofwarren · 04/03/2020 09:21

Switzerland reports the first #COVID19 case in St. Gallen. A young student who was in Milan from 21 to 23 February tested positive for coronavirus.

CrunchyCarrot · 04/03/2020 09:21

Did anyone else feel a bit more reassured with Prof. Chris Whitty’s calm approach?

Yes, he is at least giving out clear information, they should stuff Boris in a back room and not let him out, he doesn't help at all when he talks about it. After this morning's interview I feel I am more informed than I was yesterday about what may or may not happen and when.

Newjez · 04/03/2020 09:22

@OrangeSamphire

Thanks, that makes perfect sense.

I do wonder how many cases it will take before the deniers will take this seriously.

Took the train during rush hour yesterday. All those people packed so close together. I know I only have a cold, but I wonder how many people I spread that to on my short journey.

When this takes off it will spread like wildfire. I only hope we can keep the numbers down until the warm weather arrives.

just had science with ds and looked at sanitsier v soap and water handwashing. (online school, live stream class).

a single usual amout of sanister v 1 round of happy birthday= same reduced 1/2 of germs (it was tested with a nice dollop pf e coli!)

absolutley soaking wet/ dripping sanitiser = 99% no germs. have to air dry hands and dont go near a naked flame lol!!!!!!!!!!

x2 happy birthday/ good handwash technique or longer= nearly the same!! cheaper, any ol soap, done and on your way.

gladysinthepicture · 04/03/2020 09:23

so sanitiser good when out and about...liberally. a proper handwash just as good when acsess to facilities.

GorkyMcPorky · 04/03/2020 09:23

Interesting article in The Guardian about retired NHS staff rejecting the 'call to arms'. On the one hand you've got early retirees saying nope, no way straight off. On the other you've got doctors and nurses saying they were Shaffer's, bullied or burnt out when they retired and there's no way they're going back. Perfect storm.

High school student diagnosed in Washington

gladysinthepicture · 04/03/2020 09:27

also to remember with sanitiser: say if you had mud on hands and you used a good dose of it. YES the germs are dead. but the mud is still there, just sanitised mud lol
so if you sanitised hands with virus on it......your hands are now a graveyard of dead virus and things lol. washing they go down the plug hole.

Findumdum1 · 04/03/2020 09:29

Our 51 cases, or whatever itbis today, does that include the initial people - the 2 people in Newcastle, the Singapore conference/Brighton/skiing cluster etc? So some of these have recovered? Where are these people? Why aren't they talking and reassuring people? What happened to the original 2 in Newcastle?

The only person with the virus Ive seen talking is that David guy that was on the cruise ship and seems to be trying to turn it into some sort of attempt at a media career.

gladysinthepicture · 04/03/2020 09:30

I worked in a nursing home years ago where we had a norovirus outbreak....we had to close to visitors! it was grim! Interestingly the carers (like me) who were obsessive with proper handwashing etc didnt get ill. Carers that were slack did....................................

I also used to iron my uniforms . as an extra bit of heat killing!!

GorkyMcPorky · 04/03/2020 09:31

Shaffer's should read shafted. No idea where that came from.

Grinchlywords · 04/03/2020 09:33

.

frumpety · 04/03/2020 09:35

I would like to know the number of people who have been hospitalised and been in a critical condition in the UK as a result of the virus. Do we have any figures ?

DoubleTweenQueen · 04/03/2020 09:35

Hypothetical Cobra situation discussion on BBC R4, if you want to give it a go: Decision Time with Nick Robinson.

How2Help · 04/03/2020 09:36

also to remember with sanitiser: say if you had mud on hands and you used a good dose of it. YES the germs are dead. but the mud is still there, just sanitised mud lol so if you sanitised hands with virus on it......your hands are now a graveyard of dead virus and things lol. washing they go down the plug hole.

This is misinformation. Sanitiser does not work as well if your hands are dirty eg muddy. So no the germs are not dead, and you don’t have sanitised mud.

FourTeaFallOut · 04/03/2020 09:36

I actually Googled Shaffer's before I realised it was a mistake. Blush

gladysinthepicture · 04/03/2020 09:37

okay

Apricotfool · 04/03/2020 09:38

To PP questioning why paramedics would wear gloves/masks when attending a fall or whatever (sorry thread is moving too fast to catch names) my thought is that HCPs are more likely to be infected than Joe Bloggs so masks/gloves would be more about hcps not spreading rather than not contracting.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 04/03/2020 09:44

I’m starting to think this has been here way longer than anyone anticipated and many have already had/got it. Testing in ICU’s will confirm I guess.

MarshaBradyo · 04/03/2020 09:45

Good to hear from knowledgable people on R4, didn’t get it all but last word

‘Explainer in chief’ - re PM that’s his role

Say why, plus voice of experts

fullofteandneedstopee · 04/03/2020 09:50

My friend got swine flu whilst pregnant and was very sick. Luckily she was ok. Otherwise I don't remember a huge amount about it.

Lillyhatesjaz · 04/03/2020 09:52

In the supermarket today I over heard a women telling the check out operater that corona virus is something only Chinese people get because of their genetics. I don't know if she thinks that Italy and Iran are in China. This is the level of ignorance we are dealing with.

peridito · 04/03/2020 09:53

This Wiki link gives a good summary of progress of Covid in Uk

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_coronavirus_outbreak_in_the_United_Kingdom

Ciwirocks · 04/03/2020 09:54

Worldometers says no serious/ critical cases in the uk to the pp who asked. All of the positive cases are in isolation units so far though I believe? I can’t see this continuing as it spreads as there aren’t enough of them.
