@Jrobhatch29 swineflu was only 10 years ago.
I had facebook then, mumsnet was active (maybe not quite as active), other internet boards.
and it was a major item on any news and front page on the 'free' papers on public transport.

Horehound · 04/03/2020 08:56

We knew there'd be more cases in Scotland. We were told there would be.
All of this is expected yet it's being reported on here like it's breaking news Confused

Etinox · 04/03/2020 08:58

Swine flu, I remember being ‘nasty and contagious’, but I wasn’t aware of the mortality rates. 2 of my dc were sent home for a week as they travelled on the same school bus. It was only years later I met someone who’s sister had died from it. One of fewer than 500 in the uk iirc.

BiBiBirdie · 04/03/2020 08:59

I was pretty scared of swine flu @Jrobhatch29
My DS had literally been out of Neonatal care for about a month, he was on nightly oxygen and had do much medication he rattled. The NHS was hopeless then too and gave me conflicting info regards him and his wellbeing, so much so we cancelled a christening we had planned for both DCs as we were so concerned that getting a group of people together was asking for trouble. One district nurse and our health visitor told us that was sensible. Our consultant told us we were stupid (but she was a bitch anyway and we asked for a new person after that as she had been an utter twat the whole way through from him being born).

katewhinesalot · 04/03/2020 09:00

I'm thinking that all public toilets should now prop open the main entrance door to avoid having to touch anything after you've washed hands.
That could surely help.

NettleTea · 04/03/2020 09:04

R4 just starting a coronavirus special

BigChocFrenzy · 04/03/2020 09:04

I'm no fan of BJ / Cummings, but any government would have to use authoritarian measures if there is enough of an emergency of any kind, not just a pandemic

The Civil Contingencies Act 2004 - brought in by a Labour govt - enables a govt to invoke emergency powers in case of a emergency,
which need only be renewed by Parliament every month

The government borught in emergency powers early on, when a few people were threatening to leave quarantine
Any government would have had to do the same

So if we do get a lot more cases and deaths start, we can expect new rules and criminal penalties for breaking them

  • which would be supported by the Opposition too, if the measures are reasonable and proportional to the danger
MarshaBradyo · 04/03/2020 09:05

Listening to R4 sounds good, hope I get to hear it all

Random18 · 04/03/2020 09:06

Swine flu was worrying. My pregnant friend almost died. Thankfully both ok.

1st thing i did when I found out I was pregnant a few weeks later was get vaccine.

RocketFire · 04/03/2020 09:06

you can't prop open doors if they are a fire door!

furrytoebean · 04/03/2020 09:07

I've come down with a horrendous flu, I've never had anything like it. I'm bedridden and feel like every muscle is on fire.
I don't have a runny nose but I don't really have a cough either.
I'm pretty sure that it's flu but this local transmission is making me a bit anxious to be honest.

MarshaBradyo · 04/03/2020 09:07

Maybe I had the vaccine I had a newborn in Dec 2009 and was bfding. Finding it hard to recall.

Reallybadidea · 04/03/2020 09:08

I think there were some key differences when the swine flu pandemic broke out - firstly we had a treatment on the shelf (Tamiflu), secondly that we had a reasonable prospect of a vaccine within a few months and thirdly that it was thought that some people, particularly older people, were likely to have encountered a similar strain of flu before and thus have some level of immunity. There certainly wasn't much talk of self-isolation. I was working with pregnant women and neonates at the time and developed swine flu symptoms during a shift. I suggested to my boss that I should go home and he just kind of shrugged and said well, there's no one to take over from you Shock

Comenext · 04/03/2020 09:08

Public places such as schools, hospitals, shops, libraries should be seen to be making an effort to reduce the spread.
How about cleaning door handles and other points of contact.
We see staff cleaning up spills on the floors in supermarkets but never any attention given to the important points of contact.
Supermarket trolley handles are a great way to spread the virus.
Elderly prople tend to shop in real life and not on-line.
Therefore .....

Reallybadidea · 04/03/2020 09:09

And the other thing with the swine flu vaccine was that, iirc, it was ready by early winter which gave time to vaccinate vulnerable groups before peak-flu season hit.

Random18 · 04/03/2020 09:11

*Marsha - I was early 2011 getting pregnant. I think they had a vaccine. Maybe it was just even flu vaccine - I can't remember.

ofwarren · 04/03/2020 09:12

NEW: Germany reports 38 new cases of coronavirus, raising country's total to 240 t.co/eUoE2b20hL

halcyondays · 04/03/2020 09:13

With swine flu at least there was a vaccine. My dds were very young at the time and the gp surgery got children to come in on Saturday for it, they weren’t at all bothered by getting the jab, but were pleased with the lollipops that were given out by the doctor afterwards!

While swine flu was concerning I don’t remember that they were making such dire predictions about it as they are now for Coronavirus.

Comenext · 04/03/2020 09:14

@furrytoebean Hope you have someone to keep an eye on you?
Maybe you should ring 111 ?
Even if it is not CV you will need some help. Flu is a horrible illness.

ofwarren · 04/03/2020 09:14

furrytoebean
Ring 111 and explain about cases in your area. They may test you.

furrytoebean · 04/03/2020 09:16

Thanks @Comenext

my husband is here but he's not a great nurse to be honest. He just tested the fire alarms Hmm
Im shocked at how poorly I feel I never get sick.

OrangeSamphire · 04/03/2020 09:16

Swine flu was different because:

  • it wasn't a novel virus so there was immunity in the population
  • there was treatment, e.g. tamiflu
  • a vaccine was quick because it wasn't a novel virus

None of these apply to covid-19.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/03/2020 09:18

COVID-19 is being regarded by the WHO and public health bodies around the world as more serious than the other viruses mentioned because:

it is both very infectious and with a comparatively high death rate

The current mortality rate of COVID-19 even if it is "only" 1-3% in Europe
is far higher than the 0.01-0.1% for seasonal flu, which causes 600-10,000 deaths annually in the Uk
and the 0.026% for swine flu

Chickenpox is several orders of magnitude lower in danger:
only about 25 people per year die in the UK of chickenpox, which is a widespread disease

So "chickenpox parties" would be batshit (and would be irresponsible even for chicken pox)

Comenext · 04/03/2020 09:19

@furrytoebean He can bring drinks and paracetamol etc.
Flu makes you very weak indeed. Going as far as the toilet becomes a huge effort.
