This is not going to kill us - worse case estimates are around 3-4%

Well to be fair that means it is going to kill us. 4% would be 1 in 25 of those who catch it dead. I'm not very keen on those odds.

Currently the actual death rate is at 6%. That's 1 in 16.

MissPoldark · 04/03/2020 08:31

Yes I heard Prof Ferguson on R4 too.
Interestingly he estimated there were already between 50,000 and 100,000 unconfirmed cases in Italy.
This seems contradictory to WHO claims that China had captured the majority of cases in their figures and there wasn’t much in the way of undetected mild cases.

GorkyMcPorky · 04/03/2020 08:31

Yes, in finding myself unable to get back to sleep some nights, worrying about the potential situation ahead. Alongside carrying on and thinking of the near future as normal, it's quite disconcerting.

I'm also unable to follow the hygiene recommendations as I'd like due to lack of time and facilities at work. I handle many student exercise books per day as well, and if the virus can be passed via banknotes I would imagine the potential for infect is significant.

peridito · 04/03/2020 08:32

Thank you @pedanticstyleguide .So might be best to let fever run it's course ,but be careful .

Glittercandle · 04/03/2020 08:32

One of my children also has SEN and needs a 1-1, large class sizes aren’t going to work for him (he barely copes as it is) - he’s also immune suppressed. I imagine that if class sizes are expanded the school would actually be pleased if he stayed at home as it will be much more difficult with him there.

Quartz2208 · 04/03/2020 08:33

Has a sorry I missed a it’s not going to kill us all

Echoing a previous post:

*Can I all ask you..
When Swine flu was happening, did they tall about it like they do about Coronavirus ??
I must admit at that time 2009-2010 I was young, had no phone with super fast news internet, had not watched news as was dancing and dating away, read no papers as was always out and no time to even turn telly on.
Now I’m home, older, have super fast phone with super fast internet with fastest news, so I can not literally escape, also Tv on..
Is it because this really much worse or was it like that with Swine flu too and I missed that all?

I don't remember either, what was it like last time?

ofwarren · 04/03/2020 08:36

Coronavirus updates:

  • Number of cases in Malaysia jumps to 50 as 14 new cases are confirmed
  • Iraq reports first death
  • Scotland reports 2 new cases

I had a newborn at the time of swine flu. I was sufficiently concerned about it that I bought face masks for any visitors who looked a bit peaky.

So I think there was concern. But I don’t remember the potential numbers being so big.

Google and Twitter are trialing working from home

My husband works for a similar company, he’s hoping that they follow soon.

When Swine flu was happening, did they tall about it like they do about Coronavirus

definitely!
I had a dc in nursery who caught it and spread the love
there was a handwashing campaign then as well (which cut d&v in dc nursery to almost nil)

Pettswoodmumof3 · 04/03/2020 08:38

ofwarren- I am trying to read some of these threads to keep up to date. I am not particularly concerned for my family - there may be disruption/financial hit etc which could be significant but I am not concerned about death/what I see at worst case scenario. However, I am very concerned for my friends who are doctors and other HCP and on the front line if this kicks off. I think it would be insulting to them if I were too concerned for myself and immediate family. I am also concerned for some people I know with co-morbidities. I feel I have a personal duty to keep calm and follow government advice. Now the government are on the case and communicating as much as other governments that also gives me further reassurance. As to mass school closures I really do not see the point unless the underground is shut down too- i really cannot see teenagers staying home for a significant period of time. Much more likely to hang around outside and we are not a “police” state so nobody to fine them etc

lemonjumper · 04/03/2020 08:38

Two new cases in Scotland: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-51733722

Mittens030869 · 04/03/2020 08:38

*80% is one of the worse case scenarios.

The other is that it is here to stay - which given the % death rate for the elderly could have a implications for our life expectancy.*

But if that is what happens, a vaccine will be found, as with flu and previous killers.

KOKOagainandagain · 04/03/2020 08:38

Did anyone else notice that Chris Whitty said 'in this wave' when talking about expected deaths on R4?

How2Help · 04/03/2020 08:38

I saw paramedics yesterday attending a house. No masks or gloves.

But why would they? If they had been called eg for someone falling, someone bleeding etc there would be no reason to? Unless you are saying you know the patient was suffering breathing difficulties/viral symptoms.

I do think some posts are straying into scaremongering and spreading panic.

Bakedbrie · 04/03/2020 08:38

Devils advocate idea and ready to get slammed or apols if already suggested upthread....If this virus does expand and containment measures fail, what about the option of hastening its spread only through low risk groups (think chickenpox parties) in an effort to speed up its course and raise overall population immunity in the more vulnerable groups? Might that work? Then when vaccines come rapidly prioritise elderly and high risk groups?

Spacecadetagain · 04/03/2020 08:40

I remember being very frightened when Swineflu was here. I’d just found out I was pregnant with DD and felt quite concerned

Jrobhatch29 · 04/03/2020 08:47

Swine flu initially had a mortality rate of 7% as well. I was at uni at the time and remember being scared. During swibe flu we didnt have facebook, twitter etc, 24 hour news on the tv, news online so didnt have constant updates on every new case. There certainly wasnt a world a meter! We maybe watched the news once a day or saw the front of a newspaper. This is the first epidemic in the days of social media and cant help but think we have too much information at our finger tips, alot of which is conflicting.

ofwarren · 04/03/2020 08:52

I think that will possibly happen naturally @Bakedbrie as the vulnerable will end up self isolating I expect. Well, my family certainly will be.

Dylaninthemovies1 · 04/03/2020 08:53

Just seen on a local newspaper that Scotland has two more cases. No more info than that

Etinox · 04/03/2020 08:53

The keeping hydrated advice is harmless and good practice anyway. I’m sharing it.

MarshaBradyo · 04/03/2020 08:53

I don’t recall being frightened re swine flu but I think part of the issue is that corona virus spreads more easily and the extra strain this will cause.

peridito · 04/03/2020 08:53

WHO shows UK cases as falling within "locally transmitted " classification .
