NEW: South Korea reports 142 new cases of coronavirus and 1 new death, taking country's total to 5,328 cases t.co/eUoE2bjB9j

stoptherideiwanttogetoff · 04/03/2020 06:45

Anyone seen the vlog from David able? Him and his wife have been re-tested and are positive again! 😮

user34254356 · 04/03/2020 06:45

Is the reason for much fewer cases here because we aren't testing anyone who hasn't been to the affected areas? Are we masking a bigger problem?

I checked the NHS111 site as my DS has returned from a ski trip in switzerland with a dry cough. Basically since he hasn't been to one of the affected regions, the messaging is that we don't need to worry about Coronavirus.

HakunaMatataa · 04/03/2020 06:50

@dusty01 very good point. I will be taking him out if there are changes to his school. I was just worried as only just got EHCP and had to fight for the help he has now, it took so long and I was afraid of him losing it. I'm sure many people will do the same and in the circumstances there isn't much they can do I guess.

Nicepud · 04/03/2020 06:50

Justaboy that list is just spam.

Seen it all over social media, usually said to have come from various experts.

NemophilistRebel · 04/03/2020 06:51

Wondering about that myself

I’m still impressed with the number of tests vs confirmed cases which percentage wise is far lower than Italy and many others

Also quite shocked at the little amount of testing USA are doing

ofwarren · 04/03/2020 06:51

I think that is true user
How are we going to trace community transmission if we are not testing those in the community?

Banana0pancakes · 04/03/2020 06:53

Really random thought about hand gel or lack thereof; if the alcohol disrupts the outer lipid membrane would a wash with fairy liquid do the same? We use them to break down grease etc. Obvs not ideal but if things got desperate

ofwarren · 04/03/2020 06:54

About 5 or 6 hours sleep number
I've been known to update in the middle of the night if I've woken up too 😁

I tried to upload the letter from NHS England to providers that was sent yesterday but it failed to upload.

Key points: declaring a level 4 allows NHS England to take command and control approach to managing the situation for all NHS organisations.

All acute providers are required to have a covid 19 incident management team with a senior responsible officer functioning 24/7 and a dedicated single point of access for communication of alerts and test results.

Critical care units are expected to test all patients with relevant respiratory symptoms regardless of known contacts/travel history.

Advice has been given on decontamination of testing pods (really not convinced the pod in my organisation meets the required spec)

Ciwirocks · 04/03/2020 06:55

I am not worried about the testing negative and then positive again. This happens with a lot of viruses typically RSV in babies. When I worked back on picu we couldn’t move a baby out of isolation until they had had 3 negatives on 3 separate days. Hopefully the abels will test negative again when next tested.

tobermoryisthebestwomble · 04/03/2020 07:02

NHS letter continued

Acute hospitals should expect to be taking covid patients imminently (implication that high consequence units will very soon be full) and need to think about cohorting patients.

We need to closely monitor stocks of PPE and consumables and not stockpile as this will contribute to shortages.

Organisations need to look at a phased segregation of clinical areas emergency care, wards, critical care.

Organisations need to review critical care bed capacity and look at how this can be increased.

Organisations need to look at how we can support individuals in their homes using virtual consultations and manage vulnerable patients in the community

Sassenach85 · 04/03/2020 07:02

Is anyone else starting to have anxiety about this? I mean it’s consuming a lot of my waking thoughts and I feel like we are heading for a major change in life and nobody I know seems to believe it Confused

BigChocFrenzy · 04/03/2020 07:04

@Thetigeronthewobbelboard I live in Germany

The government here has cancelled one major international trade fair and is quite likely to cancel any others

tinytemper66 · 04/03/2020 07:04

Still only one confirmed case in Wales but 480 people have been tested for it.

EnidBlyton · 04/03/2020 07:05

surely you can wear disposable gloves, but just dont touch your face

swingchandelier · 04/03/2020 07:08

@Justaboy a number of people have posted this purporting to be from someone they know. A lot of it is bollocks too. Drinking warm water and avoiding cold drinks will not help.....nor will drinking lots of water....common sense

User1775564212 · 04/03/2020 07:09

What about hand wipes? They say on the packet they are more effective than gel as ‘wipe’ the virus off...

ofwarren · 04/03/2020 07:09

1st case of #Coronavirus in #Poland

HakunaMatataa · 04/03/2020 07:11

@Sassenach85 I am feeling quite anxious about it. I'm worried for my two children, what would happen to them if me and DH were very poorly. One is SEN and one is a baby. What impact will this have on our lives.
It's the fear of the unknown I guess. DH and everyone else in RL don't seem to fussed. I havent heard anyone speak about it. The school haven't mentioned it. I've seen some posts which are very dramatic and make me worry more which doesn't help. Trying to use the positives to feel less anxious, such as kids getting it less severely and the fact that FOR NOW our numbers are relatively low.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/03/2020 07:14

"I wonder if there will be a second wave in China"

The WHO and public health authorities around the world are watching China very carefully:

China has brought the spread under control with draconian measures, but these are now being gradually relaxed

What we all want to know is whether the controls were enough to effectively smother largescale Coronavirus infection longterm,
or whether Coronoavirus will now flare up again, like a fire reigniting from embers after it receives oxygen again

A major 2nd wave in China would change public health planning & containment measures around the world
and would cause a global economic crash
(we are already at risk of a global recession)

However, if the number remains low, then the public health & economic crises become much more manageable problems to be tackled
and we will hopefully learn from what worked there & elsewhere

Sassenach85 · 04/03/2020 07:17

Thanks HakunaMatataa

Feeling a bit alone with it all, even on this thread which is a huge source of info, people seem calmly resigned while it home they’re all calmly not bloody bothered Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 04/03/2020 07:19

Research & containment are key in the next 12-18 months that it is estimated it will take before a vaccine is available

The cases of COVID-19 are expected to peak by about June, then tail off

However, it looks like next winter will be another critical period, as virus cases may ramp up again and the vaccine still won't be available

BiBiBirdie · 04/03/2020 07:19

Signing in late to the new thread

Do you know what I'm sick of? People using mental health slurs as a derogatory attack on any of us who are worried about CV.

It's certainly separating out the wheat from the chaff and I hope @MNHQ will use the threads to remove those who think comments like "tin hat" and "crazy" are acceptable language terms.

Our Headteacher continues to be great and updated again yesterday (she has done every day since Saturday). No cases but one teacher who has not been abroad or near anyone who has has said she has a slight chesty cough so is not coming in. I think the idea there was if she gives this chesty cough to anyone who has lung conditions, and then they catch CV it could make it worse for them.

I must say, if one positive comes from this I think schools and the DfE may have to finally get rid of the stupid and Draconian attendance rules. Not for those who disappear on a holiday without permission. But the daft "send them in unless it's D&V" thing. In our day if your mum used school as free childcare and sent you in ill with a cough or on antibiotics, they would be read the riot act about catching germs. I think we will see a return to that and I'm pleased as every year, DS with his lung disease is negatively impacted down to this negligence.

ShanghaiDiva · 04/03/2020 07:19

@BigChocFrenzy
To avoid a second wave, there are strict quarantine measures in place in China for anyone arriving from outside the country
Eg 14 days home isolation arrivals from uk
14 day quarantine in designated location (not your home) for arrivals from Italy, Iran, Japan and South Korea.
