Springinsight · 03/03/2020 23:26

Mittens I just have 11 years of '' it's probably just a virus '' ringing in my ears.

Jrobhatch29 · 03/03/2020 23:32

I wouldnt hesitate about taking my kids out of school. One is 4 so doesnt legally have to be there. However my eldest is in y2 and will be doing his sats in may. I am also a y2 teacher and couldnt care less about hin doing his sats as i know they are only for school data... But know the school would be on my back to get him into school for this reason

Justaboy · 03/03/2020 23:41

Just passing this one for a decent reliable source!.

Last evening dining out with friends, one of their uncles, who's
graduated with a master's degree and who worked in Shenzhen Hospital
(Guangdong Province, China) sent him the following notes on Coronavirus
for guidance:

  1. If you have a runny nose and sputum, you have a common cold
  1. Coronavirus pneumonia is a dry cough with no runny nose.
  1. This new virus is not heat-resistant and will be killed by a
temperature of just 26/27 degrees. It hates the Sun.
  1. If someone sneezes with it, it takes about 10 feet before it drops to
the ground and is no longer airborne.
  1. If it drops on a metal surface it will live for at least 12 hours -
so if you come into contact with any metal surface - wash your hands assoon as you can with a bacterial soap.
  1. On fabric it can survive for 6-12 hours. normal laundry detergent
will kill it.
  1. Drinking warm water is effective for all viruses. Try not to drink
liquids with ice.
  1. Wash your hands frequently as the virus can only live on your hands for 5-10 minutes, but - a lot can happen during that time - you can rub your eyes, pick your nose unwittingly and so on.
  1. You should also gargle as a prevention. A simple solution of salt in
warm water will suffice.
  1. Can't emphasise enough - drink plenty of water!

THE SYMPTOMS

  1. It will first infect the throat, so you'll have a sore throat lasting
3/4 days
  1. The virus then blends into a nasal fluid that enters the trachea and
then the lungs, causing pneumonia. This takes about 5/6 days further.
  1. With the pneumonia comes high fever and difficulty in breathing.
  2. The nasal congestion is not like the normal kind. You feel like
you're drowning. It's imperative you then seek immediate attention.

SPREAD THE WORD - PLEASE SHARE.

tangled2 · 03/03/2020 23:44

It's only a side note, but I'm not sure why the latest cases are being reported as in Bury, and also in greater Manchester. Bury is in G.M, no?

I wonder what the end of the week will bring in terms of total cases. I'm hoping my work encourage those who can work from home to do so. Lots of us can. I know this is unfortunate for those who can't, but it will surely help if all those who can, do - will limit the number of people crammed into my northern rail commute, which can only be of benefit.

IceWings · 03/03/2020 23:50

THE SYMPTOMS 1. It will first infect the throat
Other sources are saying only 5% of patients have a sore throat. I wish they’d make their minds up about what the actual symptoms are.

fezzesarecool · 03/03/2020 23:55

Just wondering, I work a till and I saw that WHO are saying that notes can carry the virus and wash you hands after handling

Obviously I’m not going to be allowed to do this, but the other problem is that there isn’t a provision of sanitizer of any kind and I haven’t been able to get my own either

So would it be acceptable to wear disposable gloves?

SpencerReidsMistress · 03/03/2020 23:58

I would speak to your employer about the gloves thing @fezzesarecool (nice username by the way) they may say no or they may say yes. I'm surprised by the no hand sanitiser to hand. I know loads of places have been told to stock up on soap and hand sanitiser.

Wehttam · 03/03/2020 23:59

Demand your employer provides hand sanitizer. Until they give in wear gloves.

Wehttam · 04/03/2020 00:02

Can anyone back up the gargling claims on justaboy list as a family member mentioned it to me a few days ago and I instantly dismissed it.

fezzesarecool · 04/03/2020 00:04

Not naming where I work but I was very pissed off that considering we did actually sell the product no one had bothered buying any for staff

I only work at the weekend and I was going to buy some at the start of my shift as obviously good for me and nice for my customers to see

But there wasn’t any to buy or provided. I had to just buy baby wipes and use those which is better that nothing I suppose but not ideal

I’m in a small town and we get a lot of elderly people in too so I do worry about them catching anything too

LarkDescending · 04/03/2020 00:30

We’ve had the “Chinese uncle with a master’s degree” list on a previous thread. Someone pointed out that if the virus was killed at 26 or 27 degrees Celsius it wouldn’t be able to survive in the human body.

HeIenaDove · 04/03/2020 00:56

It hates the Sun

Dont we all?! Grin

LarkDescending · 04/03/2020 01:01

Neither is it that keen on the Daily Mail, whose readers dismiss it as “just the flu”.

YourWinter · 04/03/2020 01:16

fezzesarecool I work on a supermarket checkout, not a job we can opt to do from home!

On each till we have J-cloth type wet wipes, spray bottle of cleaning fluid and a roll of paper, but not antiviral cleansers. I clean the touchscreen, scale, belt and every part of the till that I, or customers or children can touch, the 'next customer' dividers and the card reader keypad. I've always taken my own hand gel anyway, I wash my hands before starting my shift and use gel whenever I've handled cash or loyalty cards. Obviously everything I'm scanning was placed on the belt by the customer, and I don't know what their toilet hygiene is like, let alone their cough and sneeze habits, or what else they've touched since they last used soap. People will rummage in a wallet for their loyalty card and hold it in their mouth while putting their other cards back, then hand it to me as if their lives depend on their bloody loyalty to the store, it's revolting.

I don't think there is any likelihood that the employer will either provide or endorse the use of gloves at the checkout.

Supermarkets are full of things people just love to handle, loose fruit and veg can (and should) be washed, of course, but you can't wash all the loose bakery products, the baguettes standing in bins at just the right height to catch coughed or exhaled droplets, bread that customers squeeze and poke before selecting a different loaf! Ugh...

@ofwarren do you ever sleep? Grin

madcatladyforever · 04/03/2020 05:40

I work on the front line in the NHS so I have no hope of avoiding it so I'm not visiting my elderly parents until this is over.
My parents are not travelling to their holiday home in Spain until it's over.
We are all taking sensible precautions.
I think going on holiday to Europe then going to a family birthday party is beyond selfish.
I've isolated myself from my entire family for the time being.

woodencoffeetable · 04/03/2020 06:15

So would it be acceptable to wear disposable gloves?
they would only work if you don't touch anything else.
you could try clean hand/dirty hand, i.e. use only one hand to handle cash.
@YourWinter has a sensible idea. clean the till with cloth and kitchen spray every now and then.

WaterSheep · 04/03/2020 06:38

Trying to catch up, do we know why there were so few tests carried out in the UK between Monday - Tuesday?

As of 9am 2 March 2020, a total of 13,525 people have been tested:

As of 9am 3 March 2020, a total of 13,911 people have been tested:
