Anyone familiar with the London tube/bus network would know there’s no way there is not more cases in London than those identified. (My suspicion NY is the same.)

There is very little being done at LGW or LHR to promote good hand hygiene and loads of passengers will daily pour onto the express services into the heart of the city. Let’s not forget there was that Bus Conference in early February too.

I think they are not getting picked up as they are the milder cases and inner London’s demographic is largely younger and more agile than some more suburban or rural areas. Instead we are finding clusters via tracing travel to ‘outbreak’ areas. My worry is for the grandparents of the unaware ‘super-spreaders’ especially with Easter so close.

ChipotleBlessing · 03/03/2020 15:26

@manicinsomniac Yes, they’re testing loads of people. Basically everyone in the cult where there have been lots of cases. And they send texts to let people know if an infected person has been nearby. So IMO their death rate is probably a v accurate reflection of what the true death rate in a developed country with good healthcare is. Possibly even a little higher than some other countries as their hospitals work on a model of families providing all personal care.

Went to collect my Mum's prescriptions today from our very large town centre Boots - they have signs up at the pharmacy saying due to supply issues they cannot provide sanitiser or face masks.

Other than that - business as usual in our town. Well, not that you would be able to tell if it wasn't as retail is dead on its feet here...... just bracing for a few more struggling businesses to bite the dust (including mine) if the S does HTF.

Anyone familiar with the London tube/bus network would know there’s no way there is not more cases in London than those identified. (My suspicion NY is the same.)

But surely if there were masses of people affected, the odd one or two would be seriously ill, and that would have been picked up?

Saying with fingers crossed, rather than from a position of knowledge!

Have to say, I thought the two experts at the Press Conference this morning were excellent.

Queenunikitty · 03/03/2020 15:31

Test results at our local hospital are back within two hours apparently.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/03/2020 15:33

Good decision - I hope BJ copies this:

Macron said that French govt will requisition all existing stocks and future production of face masks

"“We will distribute them to health professionals and to French people infected with the cotronavirus,”

Emmanuel Macronn@EmmanuelMacron*

Nous réquisitionnons tous les stocks et la production de masques de protection.
Nous les distribuerons aux professionnels de santé et aux Français atteints par le Coronavirus.

Stircrazyschoolmum · 03/03/2020 15:39

I’m not sure aj as the age profile of most people on the tube is under 60 with no significant underlying health conditions. We are also conditioned in London to ‘man up’ and carry on. Therefore my guess (and it’s literally that) is we’ll have a spike in secondary infections when those with minimal symptoms visit more vulnerable relatives. It’s not prolific in the schools so I’m not sure we are seeing the full picture.

(Sorry, I’m not meaning to scaremonger but merely cynical!)

Stircrazyschoolmum · 03/03/2020 15:40

Ps: I agree the two experts at the press conference handled it very well.

mammon · 03/03/2020 15:40

I'm on a coronavirus FB group. Someone on there has just posted on that a lady was confirmed with the virus in the doctors surgery this afternoon while she was there. This was a small village called Datchet.

MurrayTheMonk · 03/03/2020 15:42

Datchet near Windsor?

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 15:42

That's Berkshire mammon. There have been some cases there already so I wouldn't be surprised.
The government have caused everyone to just speculate now haven't they. What an absolute mess.

ChipotleBlessing · 03/03/2020 15:44

@mammon she’s made that up. If someone with coronavirus had visited the surgery they’d all have been sent out of there.

mammon · 03/03/2020 15:44

I'm from the north so actually didn't know where it was. She's put near Heathrow? There are pictures on there with the ambulance crew wearing hazmat suits etc. I can't attach screenshots.

anywinewilldonow · 03/03/2020 15:45

After the build up to "the Action Plan", it just feels like a let down, as if nothing immediate and concrete is being done.

I think people would feel much happier if the government would say things like, for example -

We've updated the travel advice as follows (with immediate effect)...[so it isn't already out of date]

We're increasing NHS bed capacity by doing the following...[because, let's be honest, that's what a lot of people are worried about]

We're banning mass gatherings of over X number of people....

The public should reconsider non essential travel and socialising...

etc etc

At the moment, it just all looks like promises to think about things further, which is no good and hardly inspires confidence!

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 15:45

That's the problem. Everyone is going to be guessing and it ends up like Chinese whispers.
They are making a big mistake not telling people.

Awkward1 · 03/03/2020 15:46

It seems this has been horrifically mishandled.

No-one from Italy should have been allowed to work should have been self isolation.
But anyway C borders should have been shut by them.
Who knows where Italy cases exactly came from.
I'm not sure what could have been done once realised so many asymtomatic.
I agree the concern is about it returning every winter.
I don't think WHO have helped here as they could have been more behind border closures.
2-4w shutdown of flights from China and we may not have seen this.
I do agree it is those who aren't worried who will kill of those who do.
But seems like a lot of elderly aren't concerned.
Just today walking along huge dollop of phlegm on the pavement. Which is disgusting at best of times. I cannot see what sort of disgusting person would do that at the moment.
I'm not sure about swimming lessons etc. Even after school clubs. But seems you definitely won't avoid if you have kids. Let's get antibody testing all those back from italy. They will be fine to work.
Awful for all those who might lose all GP. Dc ones are all 65+.
But also if anyone has flown from china to African countries they wouldn't have been able to contain it anyway. The media aren't really saying how bad it will be there. But then maybe there aren't that many 50+.

Are those with HIV surviving as they are already in the meds?

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 15:47

Included in the above figures are 12 further cases in England.

Following previously reported confirmed cases in Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland, the total number of UK cases is 51.

All are being investigated and contact tracing has begun. t.co/XyzmAWvAl8

mammon · 03/03/2020 15:48

The FB group is Coronavirus UK. There is a live post up now from an Italian lady who has had the virus and is explaining what it's like. I havent seen it yet. Lots of posts on from people who's family members have been to affected areas but aren't being tested.

Number12 · 03/03/2020 15:48

I agree, not knowing makes me more anxious! I think Korea has an app with areas of confirmed cases, we need that!!

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 15:49

The places are on their twitter page now finally

ChipotleBlessing · 03/03/2020 15:49

None of today’s cases are community transmission, that’s great news!

MaxNormal · 03/03/2020 15:50

But then maybe there aren't that many 50+.

Africa has a much younger population than Europe but there are certainly plenty of elderly people who will be at risk. Plenty of over 50s!

Yes in South Africa and the SADC countries most people with HIV are now on long-term ARVs and live with it as a chronic condition. And there are a lot of them compared to Europe, it's very worrying.

Number12 · 03/03/2020 15:53

Sorry who's twitter page shows the new locations? Thanks

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 15:54

Sorry, the department of health

onalongsabbatical · 03/03/2020 15:55

How would they have confirmed it instantly when people's test results seem to be taking about three days to come through at a minimum? That's just nonsensical scaremongering somewhere along the line.
