What if you don’t qualify for sick pay - they will be reluctant to self isolate what is happening about that?

Under review!

Random18 · 03/03/2020 13:31

Thanks Running.

Not sure what sick pay / employment rights are like for non nationals.

But I just can't see how the UK can make some of the decisions that other countries do.

And not sure I like being called dirty too GrinGrin

Fourducksate · 03/03/2020 13:31

who provides care for those self isolating?
Couldn’t answer really said over Skype it phone.

Fourducksate · 03/03/2020 13:34

Most vulnerable are elderly and care homes - a plan is coming soon.

Is Chief Scientist of WHO on COBRA?
Yes

Bedside tests are being developed so diagnosing is instant

Are staff in community settings having Hazmat PPE?
Yes we have stocks but not distributed yet will be when appropriate

Fourducksate · 03/03/2020 13:39

Advice moving too soon or reacting too quickly can cause as many problems as not moving quick enough.

Will low paid NHS workers have full pay and not sick pay if they are ill? Thinking about it.

DWP. Action for those who may have to access benefits will rules on presenting themselves be relaxed? Talking about it.

10 schools are closed today in the UK. No plans to close routinely.

Communications programme launching tomorrow. Re hand washing. Hygiene.

Konicek007 · 03/03/2020 13:39

This is really scary now.
Even my husband who is Normally never ever scared Of anything said it’s now seriously worrying.
The world we knew it’s gone now forever.

feesh · 03/03/2020 13:40

@Random18 and @RunningAwaywiththeCircus we all (including the poorest workers) have healthcare by law, although the government has just announced that all COVID treatment will be free and not billed to the insurance companies.

Sorry to insult the UK - and I am British - but I am absolutely disgusted by the places we visit when we go back there on holiday. Especially lifts, public car parks, and public toilets.

But on the plus side, you tend to get better educated and therefore hygiene-aware workers in your cafes etc and you don’t exploit cheap labour to keep the country clean (which the UAE arguably does); well you do, but not on such a large scale.

SubordinateThatClause · 03/03/2020 13:40

51 cases in U.K. now

Skittlesss · 03/03/2020 13:40

Some kids from school went to Rome over the weekend. Everyone is back in school now. They said it’s safe but I’m a bit worried Shock

Konicek007 · 03/03/2020 13:41

I was walking from my school run yesterday and it was nice, daffodils blooming, trees blossoming.
What a beautiful world we had before all this Coronavirus hanging over us..

Cismyfatarse1 · 03/03/2020 13:41

M&S are NOT supplying their employees (on tills) with hand gel or gloves. They are allowed to bring their own hand gel and use it but the shop is not supplying any, even to those in food section.

Mean bastards. Really cross about this. Anyone know about other supermarkets or chains?

Skyejuly · 03/03/2020 13:42

I work in a care centre. Its worrying.

Skyejuly · 03/03/2020 13:43

My daughter was not allowed hand gel at school.

User1775564212 · 03/03/2020 13:44

Anyone else think India and Russia may be under reporting their numbers? Both seem very low...

Ciwirocks · 03/03/2020 13:44

Where are the plans to contain this? All the government are saying is this is going to spread, people might die, people will get ill and this is how we are going to try and manage! A lot of the cases we now have could have been prevented by isolating people returning from North Italy, now it’s going to spread because these people have been going round infecting others for at least 2 weeks now. I am so angry about that, it’s like they want it to spread

DonkeyKong2019 · 03/03/2020 13:45

@User1775564212 along with indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia and Viet nam!

DonkeyKong2019 · 03/03/2020 13:46

@Ciwirocks there isn't any serious intention to contain it. Slow it yes but not contain it.

Jrobhatch29 · 03/03/2020 13:47

Bruce Aylward, World Health Organization Joint Mission to China:

"I think the key learning from China is speed — it’s all about the speed. The faster you can find the cases, isolate the cases, and track their close contacts, the more successful you’re going to be. [...]

People keep saying [the cases are the] tip of the iceberg. But we couldn’t find that. We found there’s a lot of people who are cases, a lot of close contacts — but not a lot of asymptomatic circulation of this virus in the bigger population. And that’s different from flu. [...]

China got patients in treatment early and have highly sophisticated health care treatment procedures. They are really good at keeping people alive with this disease. They have a survival rate (with a mortality rate of just under 1% outside of Hubei province) for this disease I would not extrapolate to the rest of the world. What you’ve seen in Italy and Iran is that a lot of people are dying.

Panic and hysteria are not appropriate. This is a disease that is in the cases and their close contacts. It’s not a hidden enemy lurking behind bushes. Get organized, get educated, and get working."

Not very reassuring

Have there been any cases in infants that anyone knows of? I have a 10month old and am worried. Am starting to avoid baby groups.

KOKOagainandagain · 03/03/2020 13:48

Why are the data sites not reporting the 11 new confirmed cases?

Oakmaiden · 03/03/2020 13:48

The world we knew it’s gone now forever.

That is just catastrophising. For the cast majority of people things will be ticking along as normal in a year's time. Yes, in the short term almost everyone is likely to be affected in some way, but in the long term life will get back to normal pretty quickly, unless you are very unlucky.

copperstrike76 · 03/03/2020 13:49

Had a conversation with DH last night. He's not remotely worried and "won't change" his behaviour because he doesn't think he needs to take extra precautions. I tried to remind him to keep DD in mind if he wasn't bothered for himself. He's going to an indoor music festival in London at the weekend and will be going on the tube. It's over 3000 in capacity and I wish he wasn't going. He frequently falls asleep and misses his stop on the train if he gets drunk and he's going to get drunk this weekend. His friend has already been sending him jokey messages saying tha alcohol kills coronavirus. DH is a good egg, don't get me wrong, but all sense goes out of the window when he gets together with this person. He is also a nice guy but drinks far too much. They don't look after themselves when they go out. They went out a couple of weeks ago, drank loads and didn't even have any dinner Hmm. I don't feel confident that he will take precautions on the tube and at the concert. He will let his guard down and just forget. It's not just an evening thing either - it starts at 4pm. And it's 2 days. I could ask him not to go but he wouldn't like that at all. I went to a big(ish, maybe 200 people) event a couple of weeks ago but I wasn't drinking and used hand gel copiously!

DonkeyKong2019 · 03/03/2020 13:50

@SundayGirlB there have been cases but no deaths in under 10s. They fare really well from it.

Oakmaiden · 03/03/2020 13:50

Have there been any cases in infants that anyone knows of? I have a 10month old and am worried.

Certainly no deaths in anyone under 10. I heard the infection rate for young children was very low too, but can't cite that.
