I must say I am not expecting anything earth-shattering in the Battle Plan. Late last night (per Guardian feed) No 10 was briefing in terms of:

  1. Big public campaign re handwashing.
  2. Tabling some emergency legislation this month to beef up powers.
  3. Keeping ideas for (voluntary) social distancing under review.
originalcatlady · 03/03/2020 10:15

Sorry wrote on wrong thread! Too many tabs open. Reported!

flipping SWR trains guards on strike again next week.
so whilst we still have a train service it is massively reduced and will be hugely overcrowded.

Boris should step in and do something about that! Anyone on that train will give it to everyone else all rammed in together.

Angry

would be a lot better (for me) if they just stopped the trains altogether so getting to work was impossible rather 1000x worse than usual.

Wehttam · 03/03/2020 10:17

Murray I’m with you on your logic how this will play out with those on zero hours. Your point about staff going in to work regardless is chilling because for the it’s only flu brigade they won’t see the risk as being that bad, it seems the vulnerable look after the vulnerable. Fuck.

This could be a massive undoing.

MargotB7 · 03/03/2020 10:24

Thank you for the replies. I'm dreading the 2pm update. The Worldometer is very educating though about other things though.

MargotB7 · 03/03/2020 10:25

Sorry too many thoughs. I daren't speak to my colleague today about it.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 03/03/2020 10:25

They will be floating lots of possibilities today to get the masses used to the options for social distancing.

Some people will want everything shut down ASAP to minimised spread, some will think it's overreacting, damaging to the economy and too draconian. There will be discussions about pros and cons.

When the numbers rise, people will accept the measures which interfere with their lives if they have heard about them in advance, rather than a sudden change.

The government will want it to appear the measures have the backing of the majority, so they don't have to enforce them For a lot of people they will need to see bigger numbers before they accept the necessity of shutdowns.

For me, seeing other countries situations is enough, I would accept stopping people being together in large groups from today. For others, it needs to be a problem here before it is concerning.

Wehttam · 03/03/2020 10:25

margot such as?

screamer1 · 03/03/2020 10:28

What is everyone doing about things like taking their kids to after school clubs / parties etc?

MargotB7 · 03/03/2020 10:30

margot such as?

I don't get the question sorry.

Wehttam · 03/03/2020 10:30

Ivegot agreed. Slowly testing the waters.

Wehttam · 03/03/2020 10:31

The worldometer, what do you see from it.

Thetigeronthewobbelboard · 03/03/2020 10:31

@screamer1 after school clubs wouldn’t bother me so much personally. Birthday parties would depend on the venue.

I’m avoiding soft play for now! 😮 My daughter has been ill the last two times we’ve been so I’m not going right now.

NotJustACigar · 03/03/2020 10:31

Agree with all of that IveGotBills. To many people are still in denial for the public to accept serious measures now, unfortunately.

I wish my workplace would say we can just work from home including phoning in to meetings but unfortunately nothing yet. I realise working from home won't help everyone but at least it would make the trains less crowded for those who can't.

On a somewhat positive note Mark Carney has said he doesn't expect the economic effects of coronavirus to be as bad as the 2008 crash. I worry a lot about the economic effects as after 2008 homelessness increased greatly and in America the tent cities sprung up ☹️.

DonkeyKong2019 · 03/03/2020 10:33

@copperstrike76 we are due to go DLP and then to the riveriara in August. Closely following both!

I'm at a hospital appointment with dm, and it seems very empty.

Konicek007 · 03/03/2020 10:34

I just read that there is German cruise ship with over 1200 people near Norway with suspected cases of Coro.
It’s in German papers.

published on
03.03.2020 - 11:03 a.m.
Two German passengers on the cruise ship "Aida Aura" are suspected of being infected with the new corona virus. The ship with around 1200 mainly German passengers was in the port of the Norwegian coastal town of Haugesund on Tuesday morning.
Aida press chief Hans Jörg Kunze told BILD Live that both passengers had been in contact with a person a week ago who had been diagnosed with the virus. This person is not on board. Kunze: "We expect the test results from the Norwegian health authorities this afternoon." Until then, the two guests were in their cabin. One was going to speak to the passengers and explain to them how to proceed now.

Thetigeronthewobbelboard · 03/03/2020 10:35

@NotJustaCigar

I agree, workplaces who can should be allowing their staff to work from home. If they feel they need office presence for whatever reason then they should allow it on a rolling basis imo. It would reduce numbers on public transport and also in the office.

A friend of mine works for a big newspaper company and from her social media it looks like they have staff coming round and doing hourly cleans of all desks. It seems a good idea but I’m not sure how sustainable it is.

SistemaAddict · 03/03/2020 10:36

I'd like to go off planet I think for a while. Or hibernate in a log cabin somewhere. Come on BlowJob let's hear what nonsense you have got to impart.

WashingHandsBoris · 03/03/2020 10:39

It will be a handwashing update Hmm

justchecking1 · 03/03/2020 10:41

BBC breaking news... a 5th of the qorkforcd7 ould be off all once is being reported

Huh?

MargotB7 · 03/03/2020 10:42

*Wehttam^

The other information on it. I'm sure a lot of people would be shocked if they weren't educated about it.

LarkDescending · 03/03/2020 10:44

I predict that Boris’ strategy will be to wash his hands (!) of any difficult announcements. Any bad news down the line will come from someone else.

The budget too I suspect will be stripped of anything too unpalatable so as not to add negativity to the national mood.
