I think it's very poor of them not to release the plan before the majority of people go to work / school runs.

It should have been released last night, or first thing this morning if it had to be today.

Robuns · 03/03/2020 07:38

Maybe they don't have the plan yet? It takes input from many different departments taking into account a lot of different factors. I would rather wait for one which is actually what they are intending to do and what the most reasonable and effective measures are then one rushed out before working hours. This is especially true with something such as this which is evolving constantly, there are massive reprucssions for things like the widespread closing of schools etc, it has to be considered and all balanced.

KenAdams · 03/03/2020 07:39

I think that a large number of cases weren't reported on yesterday (4 seemed too low given the numbers of the past days) so a higher number can be reported today which will show quite an increase and they will be alongside the government waving its plan saying "look at everything we're doing about it".

Keynote1 · 03/03/2020 07:40

I have to ho to the drs this morning for a blood test (essential) and am very anxious - I told them I have health anxiety so they have given me the first appointment before the surgery gets busy and I will literally run I'm and out home and wash hands but very worried. Probably being totally OTT .

SansaSnark · 03/03/2020 07:43

Yeah I can't see why the plan couldn't have been released yesterday, to be honest.

I'm expecting a lot of vague waffle though.

SansaSnark · 03/03/2020 07:44

Actually scratch that, COBRA meeting should have been on Saturday. Then if eg more people are to self isolate, then they could have done that before coming into work on Monday.

^I have a theory as to why children have not been doing the virus much in China. I think it’s because they’ve been confined to their houses. Only one person per household has been allowed to leave and it will in almost every case be the chosen adult who does the spreading.
These circumstances will not necessarily translate to anywhere else but China.*^

Also worth noting that even in China, 85% of transitions are through family contacts. Source WHO report

French health minister : reconsider handshakes and kissing as a greeting.

The UK

Norman Smith @bbcnormans
"Handshaking is ok,"says @MattHancock "Impact of handshaking is negligible."

CrunchyCarrot · 03/03/2020 07:48

Matt Hancock smiling at the idea of not shaking hands, saying that 'washing your hands' is still the best protection, which is fine if you've just done that before shaking hands, but you may not have had the chance to do so!

HasaDigaEebowai · 03/03/2020 07:48

Yeah I can't see why the plan couldn't have been released yesterday, to be honest.

Because they only formulated it yesterday and they would have had to make sure the wording was tight so that they don't have to go back and rewrite it all. In all likelihood some of it will require secondary legislation.

pedanticstyleguide · 03/03/2020 07:49

Found you all! I was out all day yesterday and came home to read the updates and couldn't find them. I only saw this morning that there's a new coronavirus section (still not sure why people can't just scroll past the threads they don't want to read).

DH works for a big international law firm in London and says they've now stopped all non-essential business travel, and if eg you were going to attend a conference/congress you can't go either - eg the London Book Fair (not so relevant for lawyers, but the first one that came into my head!)

I think it's good as it may encourage a lot more video conferencing etc. I went to a law firm's seminar last year and one of the presentations was done via video link from the US, it was very good and showed how good the technology is now. There's really no need for a huge amount of business travel. I know there's a whole industry around it, but industries wane and people adapt.

I've just started a new part-time job and am working from home most of the time anyway, but am wondering if they will tell everyone to work from home all the time in the next week or so.

SistemaAddict · 03/03/2020 07:51

The bbc are headlining about school closures and curbing travel within the UK. Hurry up with it ffs so I can make a decision about the school trip.

China's National Health Commission reported 11 new cases of coronavirus outside Hubei province on Monday. Of those, 7 were "imported from Italy," according to local officials

copperstrike76 · 03/03/2020 07:51

Why is Matt Hancock saying that? What a tool. It's common sense. I'm not going to be shaking anyone's hand in the near future. You all probably already do this, but when I get a parcel and have to sign for it I also wash my hands after that...

TheABC · 03/03/2020 07:52

Government plan yesterday: treat it like flu. No need to put anything in place.

Government plan in two weeks time: this is a bit more serious than we expected and those newspaper reports of NHS overwhelm don't look good. We need a plan.

Charlesthekingcavalier · 03/03/2020 07:53

The vast majority of people can’t work from though

unluckyagain · 03/03/2020 07:55

I'm so tired of people on this and other threads going on about people working from home. For many people this just isn't possible. In my job (if I had any work; all work for the next few weeks has now been cancelled) it is never possible to work from home.

WaterSheep · 03/03/2020 07:56

Breaking news on the BBC

Greggs results are up.

Hmm
Springinsight · 03/03/2020 07:58

'' no worse than flu ''

I run to vaccination every year as soon as it comes out, I get the 4 one.. Flu is horrific I don't want flu

Robuns · 03/03/2020 08:02

@TheABC they are coming up with a plan, it's not simple though. Restricting travel is likely feasible, closing schools as a precautionary- well there goes a lot of the NHS workforce, emergency services, shop workers staying at home to look after their children because childcare will also be closed; can you see why they're not in any rush to do that? The implications of that are huge, and the childfree nurses, doctor's etc aren't going to be able to cope doing several peoples jobs, perhaps they want to stay and work at home too. It's balancing risk with reality.

Greendayz · 03/03/2020 08:03

BBC are saying the plans will be set out "this morning"

I hope they announce at least statutory sick pay for those who are told to self isolate and aren't able to work from home. And ban non-seated gigs which seem like a hotbed of germ sharing to me.
