11,750 tested on yesterday’s update *whowants2know

OneOfTheGrundys · 02/03/2020 17:39

I agree Moomin. It’s out there now. I think it’s been out there for ages actually... we’ve just not been testing for it... I just do t know what to do for the best for DH and his transplant. He’s emailing the team now. DS and he are totally separated.

Springinsight · 02/03/2020 17:39

I read that even if warmth halts it, it may rise again in winter as happened with another virus.

I'm staggered that no actual videos of hand washing, germs in ultra violet arnt on TV.

Basics.... Keep bodily fluids to yourself.
Don't share water, drinks. Don't share cutlery. Don't stick fingers into mouth when eating!

I've always been an absolute stickler for this with my own dc and yet dp of dc school friends have literally ignored all that but been mad keen on shoes off. Confused

In laws the same. Obsessed with shoes off, crumbs etc but happily feed my dc off their forks when ill.

Another parent again mad about tiny stain on the things, mad about shoes off and dirt on sofas. Her dd came round and actually used her bare hands to grab and eat rice!! Shock then licked her hands all over.

Absolutely NO cultural difference at play here at all.

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 17:40

I cannot understand why children are not sent to school with tissues, which need to be immediately binned in class, so extra bins, and routine alcohol table wiling before and after each lesson.

If its done all the time children will just do it out of habit, this will enable schools to stay open.

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 17:41

Wiping. Something each child can do.

SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 17:42

@WhoWants2Know Based on twitter.com/DHSCgovuk (department of health and social care twitter), these are the number of people tested over the past 5 days. This is a rolling total, rather than the number of people tested each day.

13525
11750
10483
8986
7790

Since Friday, between 1200-1700(ish) tests are being processed today, and actually more were processed today than yesterday. The lower number of cases today isn't due to lower numbers being tested.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 17:42

19th case of #Coronavirus in #Netherlands

Springinsight · 02/03/2020 17:42

Also cough into elbow technique rather than hand.
Schools could be doing more.

Some seem to manage doing lots others nothing. Younger dd school is very very passive.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 17:43

First case of #coronavirus in #Latvia

HasaDigaEebowai · 02/03/2020 17:45

Kids just don't wash their hands properly. I've just had to tell off DS2 who came in from school, washed his hands and was in and out of the bathroom in less than 10 seconds. Yes he technically washed his hands, yes his hands smell of soap but no he has absolutely not washed his hands properly.

I sent him back under threat of no TV but clearly he hasn't been washing his hands properly at school.

Newjez · 02/03/2020 17:46

@Springinsight

The only people making this political are the ones bringing up Corbyn.

I haven't heard one person being critical of the government saying the opposition could do better.

We want the government to do better. That isn't political.

HasaDigaEebowai · 02/03/2020 17:46

"The lower number of cases today isn't due to lower numbers being tested."

But labs are not typically fully staffed on Saturday/Sunday and so you would expect a lower number of test results to be coming back..

SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 17:47

I'm unconvinced that we have enough data yet to prove that warm weather will halt the spread. How a virus behaves in a lab doesn't always reflect how it will behave in a "real life" situation with human hosts. I think we need more data from warm countries/summer months before making conclusive statements about how the virus will behave in the summer.

It's worth bearing in mind that there's some evidence that SE Asian countries (e.g Thailand, Indonesia) aren't testing/reporting cases in the same way as many other countries are.

RedToothBrush · 02/03/2020 17:50

George Macdonald @ George MacD
Fascinating note by Bernstein analyst Bruno Monteyne, a former Tesco supply chain director, on how grocers would handle a coronavirus pandemic...

..he says grocers plan for such crises and the phases would be: joint industry planning; reduction in ranges; dirupted operations and 'as riots break out' a shift to 'feed the nation'...

... "Feed-the-nation status would involve (1) reduced ranges coordinated across the industry, (2) the army protecting depots, food trucks and stores as they support distributing the food in the country, (3) everybody working together to feed the people of the UK"...

He says: This isn't about scare mongering: this is simply the industry for the last decade or more having prepared for major disruption..."

... "The spreading of a pandemic was always considered a matter of when rather than if and the industry has plans in place and has almost certainly started to activate those plans."

SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 17:52

The Netherlands is actually worrying me a bit:

They've caught 18 cases from only about 200 tests (compared to 1000s of negative tests in other countries). There's already a few cases of community transmission, and there's a case of a hospital mistake, which I believe was part of what caused the number of cases to increase massively in Italy.

I think the actual number of cases in the Netherlands could possibly be quite a bit higher than what we are currently seeing.

Grasspigeons · 02/03/2020 17:52

Handwashing is something they teach where i work - they also have to wash their hands at set times throughout the day anyway, like before and after snack time and before and after lunch. Whenever a bug goes round they re-do the washing hands in glitter and seeing how far it spreads lesson. I imagine this drops up with older children though.

Jenasaurus · 02/03/2020 17:52

Another interesting video from Dr John Campbell

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 17:54

This was reported repeatedly from viroligists, warmth slows virus, hence the winter season

NASA showing images of pulltion clouds and drawing links between spread of covod19.

Asking really if anyone else has comment on this, not that it makes a difference to what we do now, but whether theres any relevance to this. I only post it because its scientists raising this alert!

LarkDescending · 02/03/2020 17:55

Yes RTB I also thought the analysis of supermarkets' planning was interesting - the paring down of ranges to essential items, to be stocked in extra-large quantities.

The surge in the number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in South Korea is starting to cause serious fatigue among medical personnel, with manpower shortages becoming an issue in some hard-hit areas @YonhapNews
m-en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN20200302002553320?section=news
Medical staff under pressure amid spiking virus cases in S. Korea

Pohang Medical Center said over the weekend that 16 of its 100 nurses have quit due to various personal and work-related reasons.

The medical center, in the industrial city of Pohang, 375 kilometers southeast of Seoul, said some nurses have not been able to go home for over 10 days, as clinical staff at specially designated hospitals are required to stay at their posts till the situation improves. It said some nurses who have no one to look after their young children had no choice but to resign.

And

The need for more medical personnel was also reported at Keimyung University Dongsan Medical Center in Daegu, where the hospital said it was seriously understaffed, with existing doctors and nurses suffering from severe fatigue.

Dongsan insiders said its 230 medical staff have been working 12 hours a day without rest for two weeks straight and are fatigued.

SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 17:57

Given the proportion of UK cases that have come back from Northern Italy recently, I would really have expected the FCO to update their travel advice beyond the 11 original towns.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/03/2020 17:59

But they have only declared 27 serious/ critical illnesses? Confused

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 18:00

I am not surprised that some kids have zero handwashing skills. I have read multiple threads on here where some parents admit they rarely wash their hands and think it does not matter. So they will not be teaching their kids that.
I am under no illusion thought that my teenage DS proper;y handwashes. He knows how to, he just thinks it doesn't matter.

Fourducksate · 02/03/2020 18:02

If you want to read the WHO report on the stats. based on the China outbreak, it’s here.

It’s actually very easy to read and split into readable sections. There is a bit about children too.

Disease in children appears to be relatively rare and mild with approximately 2.4% of the total reported cases reported amongst individuals aged under 19 years. A very small proportion of those aged under 19 years have developed severe (2.5%) or critical disease (0.2%)
