Just freaked myself out in the big Sainsburys with all the bare shelves. No hand wash to be seen, or anti bac wipes.

teta · 02/03/2020 14:41

@Tud41 I really wish I could share your optimism. I tend to believe the Nhs workers, doctors and the like ... over politicians. Resoundingly senior consultants, professors and gp's have said the way we're handling covid 19 is at a totally incompetent way at every level . The Nhs is not equipped to deal with large numbers of patients requiring critical care. The call for retired healthcare staff to return has fallen flat on the floor like a damp squib.
But Yes, we' re considered the second best country with the best infrastructure (!?!). Was this dating from Victorian times?

Number12 · 02/03/2020 14:41

@GPwife2411 I think your right 40 is very low and I wonder if the weekend delays were deliberate to delay the onset of panic to buy time.

justchecking1 · 02/03/2020 14:42

I'm thinking we won't see any of the results of yesterday's cases contact tracing until at least Wednesday or Thursday, by which point we may also have some early cases from the sentinel screening too. Until then, it'll probably just be figured from people who meet the PHE guidelines for testing.

Wednesday and Thursday might be quite telling though

AvocadoOwl · 02/03/2020 14:44

I'm allowing myself to feel quite reassured by both the small rise in cases today and the government response. I think an awful lot more than meets the eye is being done behind the scenes. Obviously we are still stuffed re beds etc but their approach to containing and limiting sounds both sensible and incredibly labour intensive to me.

@RhodaCamel I believe something like 4% of people affected report a runny nose as an early symptom so it is documented as a possible early symptom but for the vast majority it's fever/dry cough. Bruce Aylward was talking about it in his WHO briefing last week.

Cosmos45 · 02/03/2020 14:44

I posted on another thread, but someone in my family went to a European country in January and was hospitalised with an illness that came about very suddenly. She had an extreme sore throat, the type of which she has never had before and had difficulty breathing. She did not have a chest x ray (or infection) and the difficulty breathing lasted about 2 weeks. She needed codeine for the sore throat it was that bad. It does make me wonder what it was she had....

Dusty01 · 02/03/2020 14:45

I think it must be because they're only testing people who have been travelling overseas in infected areas

But there's so many people in London that are coming and going to/from overseas. All the time.

And the tube is so packed and so dirty. I live here. It feels unreal.

TheFormidableMrsC · 02/03/2020 14:45

A school local to me (North Herts) has just confirmed a parent with the virus. They are saying that the school will not be closing having taken advice. I went to both Aldi and Sainsburys today. Both were exceptionally quiet for a Monday morning.

Meruem · 02/03/2020 14:45

Something I find interesting is that most people, both on here and in RL, seem to want to downplay it and "carry on as normal". But that attitude doesn't tally with bare shelves in supermarkets. It's not just a small group of anxious people who have bought up all the hand gel and toilet rolls!

tinytemper66 · 02/03/2020 14:46

Well I cleaned all my desks and door handles and light switches in my corridor in school this morning and will do it daily.
A member of staff who went to Italy over half term is off sick but was in all last week!

ItIsWhatItIsInnit · 02/03/2020 14:50

Oh sheet, I live/work around one of the areas where someone has just caught it. Someone in my team at work lives in that area. I get on a bus every day which stops at an airport, and go into London once a week.

How is it NOT going to spread, people mix around so much!

I have an immune system of steel but other people don't, I'm worried about the elderly people I know.

tud41 · 02/03/2020 14:53

@teta oh i can understand completely why people dont trust politicians etc. However top NHS workers etc will be the ones reporting these things to PHE and the government i doubt they just pluck it all out of thin air.

It just frustrates me that people write the government off when so far i think 40 cases is actually not that bad at all especially considering many of them have been caught through contact tracing etc.

I completely understand slating the government etc if they get this wrong etc, but at the moment we couldn't really ask for much better. [ 0 cases obviously would have been lovely] Also we do not know what is going on behind closed doors, much more could be happening that we are just not made aware of so no to cause a panic. Like at the airport this morning all flights from Italy were getting temperature checked as they disembarked which was not happening yesterday. Just because its not reported, it doesn't mean nothing is happening.

You are right tho i am an optimist, and i will always try and takes the positives. i could be wrong but i do sleep better at night thinking positively.

Keynote1 · 02/03/2020 14:54

I have had a runny nose and cold for the last few days as have loads of people I know who haven't been anywhere and at this time of year everyone seems to have cold anyway. If it starts with a runny nose does that mean getting checked out even if you haven't been away and it just feels like a normal cold, I don't want to panic anymore than I already am but worrying now. Also had to make an appointment for a blood test with my gp, I said I didnt want to go in the surgery because of my health anxiety with this but because I am on medication and test is overdue I need to have it done. She has given me the first appointment tomorrow morning as it will mean less people and said I can wait outside till I am called if that will help, as she said I will have to go into the odd shop, pick grandchildren from school unless I am going to cut myself of for months so I suppose she has a point. My panicking has gone to a ridiculous level.

BiBiBirdie · 02/03/2020 14:54

Well at least DP and I speaking again. He actually apologised. Either he has now realised that we live in a country with people who will ignore advice or he's running four of clean pants Grin
He did say he is worried too, but feels we can't just cease to exist. He went to the supermarket as we couldn't get food delivery for 3 days due to people pinching the slots (probably down to CV) but he washed his hands and left his coat in the car.
At least we're actually speaking. I think the school having the attitude they have has helped too (he's already been very authority led)

Blondieg · 02/03/2020 14:55

Hi, have been reading since thread 1, but may have missed it. Does anyone know the age of the youngest death?

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 14:55

@Meruem I suspect most people are not mentioning it as they don't want to come over as if they are stupid panic mongerers.

tud41 · 02/03/2020 14:55

It's not just a small group of anxious people who have bought up all the hand gel and toilet rolls!

i will have to disagree with this i was in boots yesterday and one woman had taken over 40 miniature hand gels.

she did say they were not all for her but it doesn't take many preppers to clear the shelves.

unluckyagain · 02/03/2020 15:00

I'm wondering what it is that people think the government haven't done? What do you want to happen that isn't happening?

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 15:01

@Blondieg 10 years old

Angelw · 02/03/2020 15:01

Why do people think 40 is lowHmm?
How many people these 40 have potentially transmitted to remains a big worry to me.
This number keeps going up, I guess we are heading to a situation where it won’t be possible to contain it with self isolation.
Good hygiene to prevent spread is a must!

Where is BJ in all this?I’m disappointed that he chose to announce his Fiancee’s pregnancy over the weekend forgetting we have more cases looming.

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 15:02

@unluckyagain I think more information and a real sense that they are prepared. Public information and pr is crucial at times like this. So far this has been appalling.

AutumnRose1 · 02/03/2020 15:04

Re people criticising

I listened to the radio last night, I don’t normally.

A presenter on BBC London was very angry that we’re not getting more advice.

I was baffled. We live in an overcrowded world where people travel internationally all the time. I bet he’d be angry if we were all advised not travel.

There’s bound to be new diseases, being angry at the government seems pointless. Unless he wants to do what France are doing eg shutting the Louvre, but he didn’t say that, just kept ranting about how there was no advice.

tud41 · 02/03/2020 15:05

Where is BJ in all this?

Good hygiene to prevent spread is a must!

He has been on tv saying the same thing you are saying is the best way to prevent it...

AutumnRose1 · 02/03/2020 15:05

I’d love for governments to have tried tackling overpopulation ages ago but that’s a whole other thread.

sawyersfishbiscuits · 02/03/2020 15:05

Not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but i feel like sending it to some of my friends who are 'it's just flu!'🙄
