Sad

Does anyone know how the baby that got infected early on in the UK is doing? I remember they had some extra health complications but hadn't heard anything else.

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 15:07

There have been no deaths in the UK. Haven't heard specifically about the baby though.

unluckyagain · 02/03/2020 15:07

@alloutoffucks Thanks. It was a genuine question as I think the advice has been ok so far, but I appreciate others may want more. It's a fine line I think between giving advice and causing panic.

Plantherd · 02/03/2020 15:10

No serious/critical showing on the worldometer for the UK. I thought one lady was in ICU? Maybe I have remembered wrong..

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 15:12

Read anything about disaster management and it talks about the importance of pr. Rumours are inevitable. Social media increases that. You need to give people clear information. In reality it is clear that in Britain people have been given contradictory information.
You also need to talk about what you are doing to prepare that shows or at least gives the impression you know what you are doing. Talking about drafting retired NHS staff in as a main response does not give that impression.
A bumbling fool impression, which is Johnson's main schtick, does not work in time of crises. People do not want bumbling. They want calm but in control vibes. This will be why Sturgeon gave off vibes of being in charge.
There is lots of research around this and tbh it is not rocket science. Any half way competent Government could do it. And they have to remember this is not like Medieval times where people did not have alternative sources of information. So if you lie to people, they can find out fairly easily that it is a lie.

Blondieg · 02/03/2020 15:13

I'm trying to stay optimistic and think maybe our number 40 is still low due to the fact the shelves are bare of hand gel and hand washing campaigns??
Hoping it stays low

ajandjjmum · 02/03/2020 15:13

We all have our own take on this, but I do hate it when people try to make it political.

Everyone should be working together - not trying to gain points from this situation.

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 15:13

@Plantherd Yes I noticed that. I suspect that info is not totally accurate.

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 15:14

@ajandjjmum Do you really think we should not say what the Government should be doing?

mammon · 02/03/2020 15:17

There was no baby that got infected in the UK. It was a Daily Mail sadface PANIC story. The baby had been treated by one of the Brighton GPs who got it and the baby had a viral illness. 8 of the original 9 infected (everyone picked up via the Brighton case) have recovered. There will be many more cases now that we don't know all the routes of infection

Is there a source for that? Can't find reference to it anywhere, only that the percentage fatality rate in the 10-19 group is 0.2%.

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 15:19

It was in one of those sites giving info about the Corona virus.

hoolydooly · 02/03/2020 15:21

Which sites?

Cora1942 · 02/03/2020 15:22

My dd school Hertfordshire East herts had student into Italy. The teacher were off sick and didnt return. Student returned for a few days and then sent home. Apparently some feeling ill.
Just had email from school as per government advice they wouldnt close if a student had or was suspected of having the virus.
So reassuring NOT!

ajandjjmum · 02/03/2020 15:23

Well I'm not an expert alloutoffucks - I use my commonsense and expect the Govt. to have the appropriate plans in place. I am not in a position to tell the Government what they should be doing - I accept that I don't have the knowledge.

Not saying it's not scary.

Would publicising all information be wise anyway? Wouldn't that just incite more anxiety amongst some people?

I do feel that as we are shown to be 2nd on the list of 'preparedness', people with much better knowledge of this situation than you and I - with no political leanings - have looked at our plans very carefully, and deem them appropriate.

I think your point about PR is right - but it can be difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to actual facts.

Ontopofthesunset · 02/03/2020 15:24

To be honest, I have no idea how well our government is handling it, but I don't know what advice people feel they need that they haven't got. There are lots of advice notices popping up on social media about watching out for the virus, notices on the phone when you call the GP and outside healthcare providers loads of information about when to self isolate, information about staying healthy generally. We mock handwashing advice but it is very useful. What else do people feel they need to know?

There is lots of useful information and advice on these threads but there is also a lot of pointless speculation. It is worrying enough as it is, in terms of population infection, health system overload and risk groups, without needing to create more anxiety about completely baseless fear-inflating over things like long term effects, comparisons with HIV etc. This virus is so recent we couldn't possibly have any data about long term effects.

hoolydooly · 02/03/2020 15:25

eg. This site says no deaths in children reported
www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-case-children-infants-low-disease-expert-explain-why-2020-2?r=US&IR=T
It mentions a case in a 10-year-old who showed no symptoms, but no death.

Newjez · 02/03/2020 15:27

@unluckyagain

Just off the top of my head

I would like to see flight/travel restrictions on all countries with over 100 cases.

I would like to see companies forced to pay full sick leave of anyone with the sickness or awaiting results.

I would like to see clear instructions for different categories of people, possibly a register of very vulnerable.

I would like to see rationing of gels etc, or the government to take over dispensing.

I would like to know how they intend to close towns and cities and how they are going to supply them.

I would like to see a plan for rapid expansion of hospital beds should numbers become critical.

I would like the government to stop saying that most people are not affected. I would like them to say you might not be affected, but someone you love will be, so please take precautions.

Any more ...

CaffiSaliMali · 02/03/2020 15:27

One of my colleagues is returning from an affected area tomorrow. He has been told no need to self-isolate unless he has symptoms.

I can't avoid the office tomorrow and work from home as I'm briefing someone very senior on an area of work I lead on. I have underlying health conditions (as have others in my office) and am very anxious about this.

ClubfootMaestro · 02/03/2020 15:27

I will have to disagree with this i was in boots yesterday and one woman had taken over 40 miniature hand gels

Wow which boots had 40 miniature hand gels left?! That is clearly an excessive amount to buy. I think though that Boots have a policy of max of 2 so hopefully she was told to put 38 back

ClubfootMaestro · 02/03/2020 15:29

He has been told no need to self-isolate unless he has symptoms

🤦🏼‍♀️ Given the incubation period, what’s the bloody point of advice like that?

Newleafinspring · 02/03/2020 15:29

I think it will be helpful that we are told what is government doing to contain the virus. Like today's meeting, it only says UK is well prepared. What actions coming out of today's meeting?

The only suggestion we get seems to be washing hand. For washing hand, anything action in school? It seems some school is promoting, some school have done nothing. Can every school be required to provide hand sanitiser? Can company with big offices require to provide hand sanitiser?

Someone mentioned airport started temperature checking, if all these actions to be listed, then people maybe more assured.

Some places are rationing now! Some Boots stores are restricting to 2 hand gels per person, and are out of stock by 9am every day! Am now getting worried about running out.
