Harlow. Great. I knew a school was closed there, I was just hoping it wouldn’t be positive Sad

tryingtoprep · 02/03/2020 14:01

I'm increasingly concerned the risks to younger people with underlying conditions is being downplayed. The media headlines focus on on over 60s. People often don't read beyond the headlines. It's only when you read the full article that you see the advice (to avoid crowds, etc) includes under 60s with existing conditions. It's really not helping me persuade DP to take things seriously.

Glittercandle · 02/03/2020 14:02

Only 4 new cases, doesn’t seem to bad...

tud41 · 02/03/2020 14:02

stock markets are taking an absolute battering.

The whole worlds markets are falling, you cant seriously blame our government for that one!

GPwife2411 · 02/03/2020 14:03

40 is surprisingly low. Hmmm. From an epidemiological perspective this either implies missed cases or delays in test results (hope I'm wrong)

ExhaustedGrinch · 02/03/2020 14:03

In a way I'd feel more reassured if it was more than 40 because at least then I'd feel they have 'found' more of the contacts relating to those already diagnosed with covid. Now I just feel like there are more lurking and spreading germs all over the place with no one having any idea where they are.

From iNews:

WHO spokesman Dr Margaret Harris said that older people needed to consider changing their day-to-day routines because 'avoiding catching this virus is the best outcome'.

She advised them to stay off the underground, trains and buses, and avoid football matches and other sports events because of close proximity to those who might be harbouring the virus. People should even think twice about going to busy shops and supermarkets.

"Rather than going to the shops to get things, think about everything you can order remotely," she said.

So as a 60 year old, basically I should just be staying at home now - effectively in isolation!

Juancornetto · 02/03/2020 14:04

4 new cases and all recently travelled from Italy

EnidBlyton · 02/03/2020 14:04

could be related to the weekend?

FourTeaFallOut · 02/03/2020 14:04

There's not much point in one single person in a household avoiding crowds. Surely, whole families would have to avoid crowds for that strategy to work.

VivaLeBeaver · 02/03/2020 14:05

Agree that 40 is low.... I was expecting it to be around 50.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 14:05

New cases are in Herefordshire, Devon and Kent

copperstrike76 · 02/03/2020 14:06

Well, Boris was as unimpressive as expected today, wasn't he?

"Carry on as usual and wash your hands."

My local supermarket was almost out of soap (not handgel, which has been unavailable for ages) - I'm not sure whether that's a good thing or a bad thing!

SisterAgatha · 02/03/2020 14:09

I think a lot of people are staying home, the road was bare this morning and I live on one of the main through routes to the central London from Herts. The train to Stratford goes past my house (we wave) and it was a lot emptier than usual.

tud41 · 02/03/2020 14:11

The government cant really win here... lots more than 40 and people go crazy as there are so many cases. Only 40 positives and the government must not be testing properly or missing cases.

We as a country are ranked second most prepared in the world to deal with a pandemic like this on the GHS index. There has to be a reason for that, they base it many things including what to do in certain situations and if the infrastructure is there to accommodate that.

As much as people hate Boris and the government [ no arguments if you do its totally your opinion]. But however unlikely you believe it, can we just maybe just put out there that the government could possibly handling this not too badly.

Also if in 2 weeks we have thousands of cases you can all come back and tell me i was an idiot and i wont argue :]

anywinewilldonow · 02/03/2020 14:12

@ofwarren new cases are Hertfordshire (again!), Devon and Kent, not Herefordshire

justchecking1 · 02/03/2020 14:12

When did the sentinel screening at GP surgeries start? I was expecting quite a jump in numbers from this, but maybe there aren't any figures back yet?

Charlesthekingcavalier · 02/03/2020 14:12

Wish people would give the government a chance. It’s only 40 cases so he won’t go overboard. I know this is a leftie echo chamber but there’s no way Corbyn’s Labour would be doing any better

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 14:14

I'm sorry anywine my mistake. I'm guessing they are all from the same original source?

Stircrazyschoolmum · 02/03/2020 14:14

Thanks ofwarren and rhoda for Essex info.

I agree 40 seems low. I’m thinking of all those false negatives they had on the diamond princess...

Gadareen · 02/03/2020 14:15

I'm always well-prepped as we live in a small rural town, but it occurred to me today that the sick feeling in my stomach is because, although there have been many times when I needed to stay on the ball because of bad weather, for example, the issue we were facing was time-limited. Corona virus is like a long piece of string that no one is going to find the end of for a very long time. Floods are nasty but they go down, wind that blows your tiles or roof off is awful but can be fixed. We are all prepping but no one knows when, what, where. I have cancer and a much-depleted immune system and i also have no spleen, so I'm scared. Very scared.

TeaAndStrumpets · 02/03/2020 14:16

Tud41 I agree.

Konicek007 · 02/03/2020 14:16

Everyone around me just laughs and jokes about it.
I’m absolutely paranoid with fear as I got underlying serious condition like copd with bronchilitis/ widening my bronchis.
I’m so scared..

Jrobhatch29 · 02/03/2020 14:18

Anyone else think there must be so many more unreported cases in italy for there to be so mant cases popping up allover the world from italy
