There are NHS guidelines of how to clean your hands properly along with a little video. I had to learn this to administer IV antibiotics to a relative.
But don't go overboard on this. Just wash hands and try to avoid touching your face. This last bit is really hard.

HisValentine · 02/03/2020 10:20

@peridito yes you could clean it with hydrogen peroxide

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 10:22

I'm a bit concerned about asthmatics who might stop taking the steroids that they need to manage their condition. Please don't get twitchy and stop taking them.

Systemic steroids might depress the immune system but that's not going to be the top priority if you can't breathe. If you are otherwise fit and healthy your body will probably nail the virus but it won't have much chance if you stop breathing.

Oakmaiden · 02/03/2020 10:24

Let’s hope it’s human error

Looks the right size to me - and the accompanying chart cites the UK as having 23 cases. So no, I don't think this indicates they know something we don't. I mean, obviously they probably do know something we don't, but this map doesn't show that!

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 10:24

I use Milton too running. Diluted bleach would do the same I expect? It's not like it's going in your mouth.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 02/03/2020 10:26

@Originalyellowbelly yes. I read that the Iranian authorities actively encouraged the population to visit religious statues at the time of the outbreak for their “healing powers”. So there were large groups of people doing this at any given time apparently.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 10:27

Iran reports 523 new cases of coronavirus and 11 new deaths, raising total to 1,501 cases and 66 dead t.co/eUoE2b20hL

Keynote1 · 02/03/2020 10:29

@WaterSheep, what was the reason for closing the hospital?

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 10:30

There are 36 UK cases now, not 23.

WaterSheep · 02/03/2020 10:31

Regarding the hospital

News of the closure coincided with a sharp fall in new cases in Hubei province and its capital of Wuhan but China remained on alert for people returning home with the virus from other countries where it has spread.

Oakmaiden · 02/03/2020 10:32

@Keynote1 - How are you feeling today?

Article I expect WaterSheep was reading.

To those criticising me for sending in Dd1. She often spikes mild fevers and has done since she was about 6. She is well in herself, was running around the house playing with the cat this morning. She is rarely unwell with the fevers but if she was then I wouldn't hesitate to keep her off.

I'm hoping we get updated advice today as I know of people who have been to high risk areas but are not self isolating. One is a hospital doctor ffs.

Kuponut · 02/03/2020 10:36

I fought the urge to keep the kids off today and avoid uni myself - inwardly I'm mildly panicking but keeping outwardly calm as DD2's caught enough of the news to be worried about the "macaroni virus".

Both my kids have previous hospitalisations for lung problems (both premature) and we almost lost DD2 to pneumonia a few years ago so it's really bringing it all back to me - I've only really forced myself to come into university as we have a vaccination appointment timetabled (I do a healthcare related course so we get the full whammy of NHS occupational health vaccinations) and that'll be a pain if I miss it. Plus if the apocalypse is coming - at least I won't get hep B along with everything else.

Added to which the strikes and picket lines mean getting in and out of buildings is a bit of a crush and lots of people in the way - I may well stay off tomorrow depending on what comes out of COBRA. If it gets really bad I'm taking the kids to my mum's who has a permanent stockpile in her cupboards and lives in the arse end of nowhere!

DH also is in the middle of being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes so they've not got him on any blood sugar management yet - so that's worrying me as well. Plus being on rammed commuter trains - I've already switched to the slow quieter regional ones so I'm not rammed right on top of people.

ChessIsASport · 02/03/2020 10:36

Are anyone else children taking part in the Voice In a Million event at Wembley in two weeks time? It is a choir of 5000 children from across the country and an audience of 10000. I keep thinking that they will have to cancel it but nothing at all has been mentioned about that being a possibility. Does anyone think large events will be stopped soon?

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 10:37

@Bercows I think what you did was fine.
Its like those saying we should not send in DCs when they have a cold. One of my DCs would have hardly been at school if I had followed that advice.

peridito · 02/03/2020 10:39

does anyone have figures for the death rate from flu in the elderly ( say 80 years and over ) and for currently known death rate in similar age group for Covid 19 ?

and many thanks to those on replying how to clean nail brush !

Number12 · 02/03/2020 10:39

I tried to buy hand sanitizer this morning none anywhere. I asked in one shop and the chap looked surprised and said they'd had a big delivery that morning... Turns out ONE person bought ALL of it. That was at 9 am this morning. He said it's probably on eBay now.

SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 10:42

If it reassures people at all, I told my tutor group this morning about handwashing, no handshakes (school policy as of today) and avoiding close contact. I'm also offering handwashing before break and lunch (I have sinks with warm water in my classroom).

Most of my tutor group were surpsingly sensible and asked sensible questions about who is affected, the number of cases in the UK, what will happen with gcses, and about hand sanitizer.

peridito · 02/03/2020 10:43

an earlier poster suggested surgical spirit + aloe vera gel + tea tree oil as a substitute for hand gel

Spacecadetagain · 02/03/2020 10:44

@peridito A nail brush will do it . Rinse it in hot water and drop in dilute bleach solution it sterilisation fluid and rinse before use . At the end of the day though we can’t be sterile environments .. it’s just not possible but instead sensible and vigilant about hand washing . My DD aged 15 is hone educated thank his so no high school worries but I’ve drummed it in to both her and my DD aged nine about regular hand washing and thorough hand washing . I’m washing my hands after receiving mail etc . I’m always very thorough about hygiene anyway as old habits from barrier nursing die hard but Still I do feel anxious

MissPoldark · 02/03/2020 10:44

That’s ridiculous , they should be rationing the sanitisers like the masks.

MissPoldark · 02/03/2020 10:45

Profiteering from disaster should be made a criminal offence.

peridito · 02/03/2020 10:46

thanks Spacecadetagain !
