@Bercows
Please tell me you didn’t send your dd to school with a cough & a temperature

HasaDigaEebowai · 02/03/2020 08:53

But people should be using hand sanitiser - in situations where they are out and about and can't use soap and water.

Its precisely those types of people who are doing things like being pedantic and keep arguing about soap and water being better (not in dispute!) that cause the issues. Maureen happily using her hand sanitiser after pushing her trolly around lidl is not hurting anyone. Fred who is not doing that because he's read online that hand sanitiser can't kill the virus because "its anitbacterial!" and "its only the flu" is potentially hurting people

In an ideal world everyone would have precise and accurate information. But this isn't realistic. Government and PHE very clear advice is to use hand sanitiser when out and about but people are still arguing about it.

@Number12ive kept mine home. I don't know if I would have if it wasn't for DS and his lung disease though

Just thought as I wash washing my hands, is it best to take off wedding rings etc for now?
I don't suppose it is possible to clean under them properly.
I have cut my nails really short too.

MarshaBradyo · 02/03/2020 09:01

First Cobra meeting, they could have done it earlier.

Glittercandle · 02/03/2020 09:02

Very saddened to hear of a case in Mount Vernon hospital, that could have devastating consequences.

You wouldn't keep them off with fevers anyway?

Dd has gone in this morning with a fever. This is because I've already had a letter tgreatening me about her attendance.

She has been unlucky with three bad bouts of tonsillitus where she was so ill she was bedridden (gp says she may be a candidate for having them out).

Due to her disability she also has had to have a cardiologist appt and two consultant appointment morning/afternoons counted as an aabsence. You just can't get these appointments at weekends.

So I have no choice but to send her in unless she is seriously unwell, or I'd have the council breathing down my neck too. And no doubt some more snotty letters praising 'those' parents who enable their child to have 100% attendance.

WaterSheep · 02/03/2020 09:05

Seems like many of the confirmed cases are linked to schools.

MarshaBradyo · 02/03/2020 09:06

I wouldn’t send a child with a fever. They’d feel rotten for a start.

halcyondays · 02/03/2020 09:06

I imagine we’re going to see an increase in cases over the next few weeks. No doubt there will be people who’ve come back from Italy or other countries and are spreading it unknowingly as we speak.

I wonder if they’ll come up with anything sensible at this Cobra meeting today. Shouldn’t they be looking to cancel any events with large crowds as other countries are doing and stepping up procedures at airports e.g taking temperatures?

Pity we don’t have a sensible PM at a time like this.

Neonrain · 02/03/2020 09:07

If your child has a disability the council are lenient on attendance.
My child has a disability and sending yours to school with fever could kill mine. It's completely irresponsible, dangerous behaviour.
You should know better having a child with disabilities.

That goes for anyone sending their child to school ill, irrespective of Novel coronavirus.

Nicepud · 02/03/2020 09:07

Apologies for the poor post spell checking. Currently walking back from school run!

Quartz2208 · 02/03/2020 09:07

It would be half term effect and schools

Yes the clinic one is sad and scary I think Italy and the US do too and it could have awful consequences there

Chilli18 · 02/03/2020 09:07

I've been lurking here for a while and due to the post about 111 i thought i'd comment to maybe put some of you at ease. I had to ring 111 yesterday for my son (turns out was burst eardrum) after 10mins they answered phone, 1hr i got a call back to book appt all booked and seen 4hrs later. They did say they were very busy but i still had an amazing service.

Spacecadetagain · 02/03/2020 09:07

@ofwarren I’m an ex nurse (surgical ward large teaching hospital ) jewellery will harbour germs so best to remove .
I’ve just been told DDs school are having a hand washing lesson today and the school have bought in hand sanitisers

ajandjjmum · 02/03/2020 09:08

MarshaBradyo
My understanding is that they have been having the COBRA meetings, but this is the first one that BJ has attended. Might be mistaken though.

Redpriestandmozart · 02/03/2020 09:08

I really am concerned about Crufts, on two levels, there will be huge numbers of the public that come from around the world, it's very busy and tightly packed. Also, there will also be exhibitors from all over the world, Italy, France and Germany in particular, dog show people are very determined to make up champions at any cost. There hasn't been an update from the KC in the last couple of days so it seems to be going ahead.

Then there is Cheltenham, St Patricks Day, London Marathon... it's hard not to think of public gatherings. All of these were canceled or curtailed during the Foot & Mouth outbreak.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 09:09

@Nicepud you need to speak to the board of governors at the school. Your hospital appointments should go down as authorised.
My son has only 75% attendance due to his issues and the school dont care one bit.

halcyondays · 02/03/2020 09:10

I wouldn’t send a child in to school with a fever just because I’d had a letter about their attendance. They’re just standard letters they send out all the time, if there’s a genuine reason they need to be off, I’d keep them off.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 09:10

Thanks for that space I'll take it off and get my husband to do the same.
Your school sounds like one of the sensible ones thankfully.

DressingGownofDoom · 02/03/2020 09:10

I feel nervy about today's update. I don't think we will reach the tipping point today. However I am going out this morning to get some paracetamol and hand soap just in case whatever news comes today triggers panic buying. Our town is all out of hand sanitiser but I do have a couple of bottles. I've ordered paper towels into work because everyone was using the same germy hand towel to dry their hands with Envy
