Presumably that was honeymoon guy? They've said there were only four left behind and it isn't the Abels

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 13:35

The patient is described as a British man but his identity has not yet been released. For those concerned about David Abel: It's not him

I have been locked out too! Other website working fine so not the internet

planningaheadtoday · 28/02/2020 13:38

@AmelieTaylor this is our experience too.

Two teens that are naturally anxious are taking hand washing and hygiene seriously, the other two are more 'so what? I'm not going to die, I care more about not looking silly by hand washing in front of my mates'

Re dogs: the Guardian live feed at 12:57 highlights a sceptical response from a professor of molecular virology to the report of canine infection.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 13:40

I was fretting then. I had updated about the diamond princess death but hadn't said that it wasn't David Abel!

MissPoldark · 28/02/2020 13:41

I’ve had the same trouble accessing

justchecking1 · 28/02/2020 13:45

How come the U.K. cases were already announced instead of waiting for the PHE update? Does that mean there won't be anymore for today?

Potkettlexx · 28/02/2020 13:46

Just heard on TV that there’s a possibility of a contingency plan in NHS if it reaches pandemic.

Apparently 3 doctors would decide who would get the bed if there’s a shortage. Example a fit 40 year over an 80 year old.

One of the women said it’s ageist but if it came to it how else could they do it. Scary stuff

The WHO on the ground investigation team in China have released their report if anyone is interested

OK I have had some advice from a sports body this morning - sufficiently vague but broadly we will let you know as necessdary but local clubs to risk assess etc.

Is anyone else involved in a club for youngsters - scouts, guides, football, ruby, swimming, drama etc?

  1. Have you been provided with or sought advice on COVID-19?
  2. Have you sent any communications to parents yet?
  3. Do you have plans for ongoing meetings and larger events?
  4. What about financial impact - say we have a 2 week shut down will you refund fees? We will still have to py rent on our various council run venues so unlikely to be able to provide refunds on monthly fees unless the council refund plus. Plus we can't suspend the overheads such as insurance etc. If we had to refund we'd go bust pretty quickly.

My main concern is we are involved in a super competitive sporting enviornment with some high calibre athletes in our club. There are also some super competitive parents. I can easiy see some of those bring little Johnny along to an event (like the one this weekend) even if they have been to a lockdown town in Italy and certainly if mum or dad has been there.
Training is also a major concern - we are getting close to our major events in April -June. Missing 1 week genuinely makes a huge difference and this is not something you can do at home. I can easily super compeitive parents taking a child to another venue (swimming) to train. This could be an issue where there either a non-nationwide lockdown or we have a venue lockdown or some isolation due to infected athelete.

@Potkettlexx That's triage for you. Survival of the fittest. They won't bother with ITU at all - anyone who needs ventilation - time and money and resource invested not worth it vs small chance of good outcome.

DramaQueef · 28/02/2020 13:52

I'm still waiting for a call back from my DC's school. DC told me last night that a child in their class was in Italy last week, was in school up till Thursday when he 'had a cold and was sniffling' and was then sent home and told to stay off for 2 weeks.

These are my DC's words and wasn't aware of what area of Italy the child had visited.

I have rang the school, spoke to reception who didn't know anything and could not help so put me through to the pastoral team and I had to leave a message. They have not called me back but have approached my DC in school to speak to. I have called again since and left another message but still no call.

It's more the case that they can't magic up ITU beds that are already in use. As harsh as it is if you have an 80 year old and a 30 year old needing intubation it makes sense to give it to the 30 year old for a variety of reasons.

It's not that the nhs 'aren't going to bother' putting anyone in ICU, they just have to prioritise who gets a limited number of beds. Horrible situation but it is what it is.

Potkettlexx · 28/02/2020 13:57

@RunningAway

It’s frightening.

@YoursTunbridgeWells

You’re right that’s exactly what would happen if it takes a real grip.

LittleSwede · 28/02/2020 13:58

Went for a peadiatric appointment at the local hospital with DD today, must have seen at least 30 huge, bright, signposts with arrows pointing people towards the coronavirus isolation pods! It would be very hard to miss them. Also posters up everywhere.

penguinsonaslide · 28/02/2020 13:58

Personally I think there is no stopping the spread now and most of us will get it no matter how much we wash our hands or stay at home. Just got to ride it out.

I'll be practising good hand hygiene, as I always do, and getting online shopping, as I always do, and avoiding crowded places, as I always do, but other than that I will be continuing my daily activities unless I or anyone I live with gets sick.

Moomin8 · 28/02/2020 14:00

Am I correct in thinking that if the WHO declares a pandemic, there will not be any more attempts to quarantine people and we just have to ride it out?

Acrasia · 28/02/2020 14:01

I live in a town just outside Stuttgart, and local media is reporting that one of the new cases in this area has no known contact with any hotspots, although I guess it will be related to the guy from Milan. Interestingly, because he has no traceable contact with the virus, he was tested for flu first, and only when that came back negative was he tested for coronavirus. This is apparently the first cases diagnosed in this way. In case anyone can read German here is the article www.stuttgarter-zeitung.de/inhalt.coronavirus-in-baden-wuerttemberg-erster-infizierter-im-landkreis-ludwigsburg.be06eacf-0f10-4be5-8b15-1f78ea7b942d.html

I am definitely a bit nervous now, and have noticed things disappearing from supermarket shelves. We’re stocked up just in case we have to self quarantine, which is looking increasingly likely. I hope it will be fine, but I’d rather be prepared and not need it then the alternative. It’s all stuff we’ll use well before it expires anyway.

LarkDescending · 28/02/2020 14:03

Moomin8 I don’t believe so. Escalation thresholds will be based on local UK circumstances and not arbitrary classification announcements from the WHO.
