There are a lot of posts of people worrying. I thought it could be helpful to share positive and assuring information in one thread.

For me, the most reassuring thing so far is the fact that of approx. 1500 people in the UK suspected to have and tested for CV have come back as negative.

Thank you. Plenty of other threads.

Why don’t we all talk about something positive for the week ahead? For me I have 2 positives:

  1. tomorrow is my DD’s 6th birthday, she is soooo excited!
  1. Tomorrow is also the start of Cheltenham Festival and as someone who works in the racing industry and is a matched bettor, I’m excited for the great racing and the money I hope to make!
mealychump · 09/03/2020 19:36

Been following this since day one.

It's my source of news.

Last week I was an awful wreck.

This week, much more perspective. My news alerts are off and I just catch up with the BBC headlines once or twice a day. I don't click unless I feel I need to. Today I glanced at them and then walked away.

I do think we need to keep this tread friendly.

Nobody is saying Covid 18 isn't bad. Of course it is, we can see the proof of that.

However people are saying we need perspective.

It isn't as bad as the media are making out. If it was that bad, things would change over here. Schools would close, people would be told to avoid others. Large gatherings would be cancelled. They aren't and haven't.

The government are not Muppets. Some people may choose not to trust them, but I choose to do so. They will lead the way and manage the situation. They did in China. Granted it took more drastic measures but they have managed it. I firmly believe our govt will do the same.

Life in my small town goes on as normal. No shortages of anything in the shops other than hand gel.

Cases are not rising as rapidly as people had feared. And for sure our hygiene has improved.

The only thing we can do is carry on until we are told otherwise and trust those who run the country, to do so. Like Boris or not, you cannot argue that he is surrounded by lots of very smart and capable people, including top medical professionals.

Thanks everyone I don’t know what I was thinking looking at the DM.
My friend sent me a tweet that said “once you realise Covid 19 can be sung to come on Eileen that’s all you’ll hear when you read it”
I’m not trying to make light of the deaths that have happened at all but strangely that has helped a bit! And it’s very true...

Spacecadetagain · 09/03/2020 19:47

@CaveMum it’s my DS s birthday tomorrow too .. he’s 19 and I’m determined not to let what’s going on right now overshadow it 🙂

HonestlyItsFine · 09/03/2020 20:05

Happy birthday to CaveMum's daughter and Spacecadetagain's son! May they both have lovely days.
Positives for me this week: After Friday, I have 1 days off from work (annual leave + having to work the following weekend means I have Mon+Tues off!)

HonestlyItsFine · 09/03/2020 20:05

11 days not 1!

CaveMum · 09/03/2020 20:17

Happy birthday to your son for tomorrow too Spacecadet

Spacecadetagain · 09/03/2020 20:25

Thank you @HonestlyItsFine 😁
@cavemum I hope your dd has a lovely day tomorrow !

Spudlet · 09/03/2020 20:34

Stolen shamelessly from Facebook:

Ooh, I feel a little sick, a little sick
No, don't think it's the flu this time, Corona
Ooh, you make my nose run, my nose run
Now I'm coughing all the time, Corona
Never been to Chinatown, Chinatown, but I got dirty hands
I always sanitize, sanitize, but I forgot this time
My, my, my, aye-aye, whoa!
M-m-m-my Corona

With thanks to Barry off of Angry People in Local Newspapers 👍

Sugarmirror · 09/03/2020 20:35

I had to come home from work sick. Feel quite positive about it as at least I don’t have to get public transport for a couple of days..

ScarlettDarling · 09/03/2020 22:06

If I'm reading the World o meter figures correctly it seems like today in China there's only been 4 new cases and 1 death. Definitely light at the end of the tunnel for the Chinese and that will be us in a couple of months time.

Rassy · 09/03/2020 22:17

Had been feeling better about the situation but finding it more difficult this evening due to the situation now in Italy. Also it shocked me about possible self isolation for minor symptoms.

Need a hand hold and some reassurance/positive news!

HanaHeya · 09/03/2020 22:26

I’d like to join this thread (and a new one if it’s set up). Have been really struggling with anxiety. However, I’m thankful I have it because it means I’m well prepared for isolation if it happens and my family have everything they need. I’m trying to dramatically improve sleep, diet and exercise which can only be a good thing to build strength. I think I’m going to take the kids out of school from Friday until after Easter (both are little and not in crucial year, they’re also at private school so we break up on 25th anyway).

PowerslidePanda · 09/03/2020 22:36

@Rassy - I'm feeling better about the Italy situation with the news that the entire country is being put on lockdown. Previously I couldn't see how the outbreak could end (not before a vaccine is available, at least) but this, followed by the 2 weeks quarantine for anyone arriving in the country that China and Israel are implementing, looks to be a solution and I feel reassured by the fact that governments are prepared to take those measures to put an end to this.

RapidRainbow · 09/03/2020 23:04

Yes I actually feel reassured by Italys lockdown. If it works then we may follow suit but before the situation can infect as many as it did in Italy. Those of us who live outside of China and Italy are fortunate in that they are helping create blueprints on dealing with an outbreak for our own countries. The news that people slightly ill may be asked to self isolate is also welcome, it could really minimise the impact of we get community transmission (a non scientific opinion here) as people feel less pressure to keep on going to work and fight on (there is a martyrdom in UK I think, propelled by fear of disciplinary).

I also feel that right now the government in the UK are appropriate in their response. They're being quite transparent about where we are and what the next step would be and why.

My local newspaper has a map for the UK with cases by geographical area. There's quite an even spread, no unexpected clusters and each individual county has what you would consider a tiny % of cases so far.

Containment with the government poised to go further with prevention techniques is positive.

Chinas declining figures are encouraging, remember they contributed to about 90% of worldwide cases.

I feel reasonably reassured by our government's response so far (which is not something I find myself saying in regards to the current lot normally!). The prospect of
lockdown / quarantine for mild symptoms however terrifies me on a personal level, we are a family who goes out a lot, all the time, every evening as well as school and work, plus we both work for small businesses and I'm worried about their survival. Not to mention disruption to DS's GCSE studies. However for now we carry on, try not to dwell on it and take sensible precautions re handwashing etc.

Jrobhatch29 · 10/03/2020 06:58

Im really struggling this morning. I kept away from the news last night but seeing italys situation has really upset me. I cant understand why its so bad there

Bloodybackpain · 10/03/2020 07:10

I’m de lurking to join in here, thank you for starting this, I’ve been reading every day!
I’ve managed to do a couple of big shops over the last few weeks so feel ok food/provisions wise. But I think it’s all the uncertainty, I keep waking up with a knot in my stomach. I feel more stressed by the thought of the uncertainty than getting the disease itself!
Anyway, I’m working at home today, once the kids are at school I’m going to do a meditation to try and calm myself a little

Jrobhatch29 · 10/03/2020 07:15

Theres a case at my local hospital now. Im meant to be going for an ante natal appointment on friday.

NemophilistRebel · 10/03/2020 07:20

Same here @jrobhatch29

I’m trying to think positive in that I will be in a different area/ward I hope

shinynewapple2020 · 10/03/2020 07:34

We too have a case at our local hospital where we are visiting FIL who is elderly and seriously ill. DH asked if it was best not to visit the hospital for a few days because of this and I considered that the CV patient would be somewhere in isolation and that if there had been a moment where there could have been transfer it was A&E last week - and that's gone now.

I said we should just be extra vigilant to use all the gel dispensers around the hospital if we touch anything , maybe use stairs rather than enclosed lifts.

Jrobhatch29 · 10/03/2020 07:35

@NemophilistRebel when are you due?

M0reGinPlease · 10/03/2020 07:42

@Jrobhatch29 they did nothing to contain it easy on, or take any of the measures we've taken here. It got out of hand which hopefully isn't the case in the UK. Much as I despise our government, they seem to be taking sensible advice from knowledgeable people.

Sunshinegirl82 · 10/03/2020 08:01

@Jrobhatch29 RGOG have now produced some guidance on CV high might be worth a read. It suggests that, as far as they can tell at present, pregnant women are not at a particularly increased risk from CV.

A recent study (Read et al 2020) suggests that only about 5% of the cases in China have been officially recorded. That suggests the percentage of people who become very unwell or die is actually much lower than the current figures suggest.
