There are a lot of posts of people worrying. I thought it could be helpful to share positive and assuring information in one thread.

For me, the most reassuring thing so far is the fact that of approx. 1500 people in the UK suspected to have and tested for CV have come back as negative.

I think his chances of dying are slim, his chances of having a wonderful time are huge.

(Actually I think he is more likely to be involved in a car-crash than get covid-19, but that's because I know something about the driving in some places in those countries...)

Seriously, I think he sounds as if he knows what he is doing.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 09/03/2020 15:26

He’s very sensible. Has downloaded the Viet/Khmer/Malay dictionary onto his phone so that he can communicate via google translate if need be!

Spacecadetagain · 09/03/2020 15:46

I’ve stopped looking at the Doomsday thread as it’s just too depressing

Roussette · 09/03/2020 15:48

Awww LaBelleSauvage I do hope he can go. Wonderful experience.

dingit · 09/03/2020 16:06

Ok, no one laugh. We are due to go on a much awaited and saved up for family cruise in 4 weeks (Caribbean). I'd be shot on the other thread. I'm hoping we can still go....

M0reGinPlease · 09/03/2020 16:11

Sensible words @Sunshinegirl82

and I couldn't agree more re Boris!

God forbid we have a genuine and sudden crisis in this country. Can you imagine the Australian bushfire crisis here?! I'm ashamed of the way the population at large is acting. The lovely checkout lady at my local supermarket today told me staff had basically been assaulted for toilet rolls as they came out of the stock room at the weekend! People should be ashamed.

Oblomov20 · 09/03/2020 16:15

Good thread. I have zero anxiety about it.

Strangely, I think it's a good thing. I'm not particularly environmentalist, but No one took any notice of Greta Thunberg before. Maybe less business class travel for pointless business meetings, which could have been done by a Skype call, will inadvertently help change the way we see and do things.

All the hype and people buying all the toilet rolls is starting to piss me off.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 09/03/2020 16:48

Roussette I really hope so too. The report this weekend about the British couple quarantined in Vietnam in ‘dirty’ conditions ( their words) hasn’t helped the anxiety of family members, some of whom are obviously keen for him to change plans. I suppose my biggest concern is that someone on one of their flights or hostels tests positive and they have to go into self isolation for 2 weeks. But you can’t know that in advance.

peoplepleaser1 · 09/03/2020 16:53

@LaBelleSauvage123, I think that compared to this type of adventure pre-coronavirus maybe your DS should have access to a decent sized emergency fund if possible.

I'm not sure exactly what he might need it for but if it was me I'd like to think he has access to emergency cash if needed.....

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/03/2020 17:21

My M&S food hall near me had full stocks of everything. They said they have loads of loo rolls in stock and were confused about the panic buying. But I don’t expect people panic buy in M&S food hall!!

Sunshinegirl82 · 09/03/2020 17:26

According to Dr Tedros at the WHO briefing 70% of those infected with CV in China have now recovered which is really good news.

thereplycamefromanchorage · 09/03/2020 17:28

Thanks for the Zen thread. Have been trying to focus on not worrying about something I have no control over - this has really helped me get some perspective.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 09/03/2020 17:32

Peoplepleaser1 - we will definitely provide emergency cash if needed.

Dennisreynoldsduster · 09/03/2020 17:37

I’ve been really calm about this but I’m in need of a bit of talking down now
Saw the pictures from Italian hospitals in the daily
Mail and it’s unsettled me.

PineappleDanish · 09/03/2020 17:41

Step away from the Daily Mail. Seriously. Just don't look. They have been ramping up the hype over the last few weeks and they are catastrophising dreadfully.

I've deleted news apps off my phone, don't look at the websites and don't buy the papers. Watch the BBC news at 6 and that's it. Too much information is a BAD THING.

DoubleTweenQueen · 09/03/2020 17:41

I hope the Mail are taken to court over those pictures. And many of the blatant 'stories' being out&out lies and twisting information to sensationalise the story. They are disgusting. Please avoid it.

Spudlet · 09/03/2020 17:59

I once went on a course where Jonathan Powell, who was Tony Blair’s chief of staff, did a talk. He told us that every newspaper plays to the fears of its audience - whatever those are. But the Daily Mail was in his opinion unique, in that it created the fears and then amplified and played on them.

Don’t read the DM. They aren’t your friend. They want you scared because that sells more papers and generates more clicks.

Jrobhatch29 · 09/03/2020 18:09

I was doing okay today until i saw those photos. Why are they scaring us like that. X

DoubleTweenQueen · 09/03/2020 18:12

Those poor people are being monitored and cared for. Although appalled by the gross intrusion into the patients' privacy, I actually found the clear high quality of care they were under quite impressive.

Spudlet · 09/03/2020 18:19

@Jrobhatch29 Because it makes them money. It honestly is as simple as that. More clicks = more advertising revenue.

There are more than 33,000 annual gun deaths in America, and many of those will also be painful and frightening (if all of them are not, and I suspect they all are). That's nearly ten times as many as have died world-wide from covid-19 so far.

As I said upthread, we don't know how many people in China will not die painful and frightening deaths this year because of the reduced pollution in that country caused by covid-19.

Perspective is good, StoneApostles.

StoneApostles · 09/03/2020 18:57

That’s all fine then. I’m sure the parents worried about children and elderly parents with health problems will be glad to know their potential deaths will be for the greater good 👍 I’ll leave you all to it.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 09/03/2020 19:01

Thank you; that would be a good thing to do. Calling people disgusting won't help the people you are concerned about either, will it.

AlandAnna · 09/03/2020 19:12

A plea to keep this thread nice please? It is for people struggling with their mental health due to the current news stories and it doesn’t need in fighting. Thank you.
