My GP, at the bottom of my road. WIBU to panic now? I have 2 young kids (1 baby.) I’m more concerned about them... 😕

OP posts:
NothingWrong · 10/02/2020 18:59

I hope it doesn't spread too much in the UK, because I would hate to get it. The thoughts of the pain and discomfort is not something I'd be looking forward to! I hope the 8 people who have it in England are comfortable enough and receiving the best care possible.

yellowallpaper · 10/02/2020 18:59

I would be very concerned as it spreads so easily. If it gets into schools and nurseries we are all in trouble. babies especially are vulnerable.

StCharlotte · 10/02/2020 19:00

A colleague is flying to the Far East for a week and eork have told her to self-isolate for 14 days on her return.

purpleboy · 10/02/2020 19:02

@littlepeaegg DDs friend is at your school also. Am I right in thinking the family haven't tested positive yet? We're supposed to meet up next week but will have to cancel if it's confirmed. Hope you are all safe and well Thanks

Wilmalovescake · 10/02/2020 19:03

All the supercool people are welcome to come and form a human barrier between me and anyone with CV.

I’m quite happy being cautious and taking no risks thanks. You do you.

ladyflower23 · 10/02/2020 19:07

@purpleboy are you in Brighton?

littlepeaegg · 10/02/2020 19:08

@purpleboy no, they should get the results tomorrow and they are letting us know.

My child has been off school due to a bad cough and fever so if it is positive the hospital want my child in to be tested too.

It's awful!

TheNoiseHurts · 10/02/2020 19:09

I'm also in Brighton OP. My window cleaner casually mentioned he'd been in contact with the original guy who has the virus before saying he felt a sore throat coming on.

Flash back to the swine flu when DC1 was tiny.
I'm in Brighton and was on the bus on the Lewes road it was rammed. Some dickhead was hacking their guts up next to me telling me that she thinks she has swine flu because she had been around such and such and they are in hospital with it.

I wanted to stand up and literally whack her round the head.
For getting on the bus, for openly coughing, for possibly unnecessarily worrying those around her.

People are such twats sometimes.

floatygoat · 10/02/2020 19:09

Ha! People saying it's just the flu are ignorant.

Missillusioned · 10/02/2020 19:11

I noticed that the doctor in China who first reported the virus is said to have now died of it. A man in his 30s who has no pre existing conditions as far as we know.

This means one of 2 things - he has 'disappeared' and we are told he is dead, or that the virus is a good deal more deadly than we have been told.

frumpety · 10/02/2020 19:11

I can understand your concern OP, a number of cases of a new virus have been diagnosed metres away from where you live. I think a lot of people would have a moment of mild panic, add into the mix small children and I think I would probably had a similar reaction.
However you haven't been to the GP surgery during the time when the man was there, or at anytime afterwards so that ticks a good big box on the rational reasons not to be alarmed list. Smile

covetingthepreciousthings · 10/02/2020 19:11

@littlepeaegg I hope you're little one is ok.

Whiskeylover45 · 10/02/2020 19:11

There has been over 1,100 infected cases, and 800 odd deaths been reported in Wuhun, China, out of the 11 million people who live there;

where as there has been 4 - 5 infected cases, and no deaths, here in the UK out of 66 million people.

Maybe that's why China is deserted. I'm sorry OP I can't get excited by this. You are much more likely to catch flu and have complications and die from it than you are coronavirus, especially over here. It'll be fine. But if it puts your mind at rest, just practice good hygiene and ensure your children do too.

Whiskeylover45 · 10/02/2020 19:13

Totally prepared to be told I'm wrong with those numbers as I havent read the news in a few days, but my point is less than 20 people out of 66 million have it. When there are hundreds of reported cases per day, I will start to worry

TheNoiseHurts · 10/02/2020 19:16

Sorry I managed to scroll past this the first time but I had to stop at @StrangeLookingParasite post stating that antibacterial stuff doesn't kill viruses and only kills bacteria.

Please tell me you have now learned that you and very very wrong.

And please stop spouting such absolute drivel.

It's dangerous drivel as well.

And don't start with the "too much causes AB resistance." Not using AB's correctly causes AB resistance.

Please stop using important information so wrongly, it could make someone seriously ill.

Please educate yourself.

justdeckingthehalls1 · 10/02/2020 19:18

Yes, Whisky you're way out!

Over 40,000 infected and 900+ deaths, that we know of. Experts estimate its about 10x that based on usual disease progression models

purpleboy · 10/02/2020 19:18

@ladyflower23 no another southern coastal town.

@littlepeaegg gosh I really feel for you, I really hope your all ok. I've got everything crossed for your DD. What years are the possibly infected children in?

DarklyDreamingDexter · 10/02/2020 19:19

I live in China and the hysteria in the U.K. is something to behold.

Seriously? What hysteria? It’s being reported on the news, mainly about empty streets and trains in China, etc. The only person who’s actually even mentioned anything about the virus to me in real life is a complete hypercondriac who panics about every sniffle. More people die of ordinary flu, sadly. It’s unfortunate for the people who have it, but I’m not going to panic or worry. (Well, not yet at any rate.) It’s not being ‘cool’ it’s just taking a proportionate response to what is at the moment just a tiny risk in the UK.

justasking111 · 10/02/2020 19:19

@StCharlotte "A colleague is flying to the Far East for a week and eork have told her to self-isolate for 14 days on her return."

Can an employer do this legally?

When the twin towers fell my friends company were sending staff to China for a conference, the staff refused to even use the private jet.

littlepeaegg · 10/02/2020 19:19

@purpleboy 3, 5 and 8

Our dds are in year 2, friends little girl is currently on holiday but a chance they have come in contact with said children as it's such a small school.
I actually feel cross that the kids were sent to school, surely the parents had some idea infection was possible if they have been in those regions.
We have a lot of Chinese borders at dds school but all were tested back in early January and weren't allowed in school until, they were cleared.

EnidBlyton · 10/02/2020 19:26

my 84 year old dm takes the brighton bus, i wish she wouldnt

covetingthepreciousthings · 10/02/2020 19:31

A colleague is flying to the Far East for a week and eork have told her to self-isolate for 14 days on her return."

Will she work from home? If not, are they paying her?

floatygoat · 10/02/2020 19:33

The virus started in November in China. So the number of infected and dead people is after nearly three months. Do pp really believe that it's just not going to spread over here? And why?
