If the death/critical illness rates are anywhere in the ranges suggested, for every severely ill person you would expect at least four to recover well like this dr seems to have done. It is reassuring to finally hear directly from someone who has recovered, but we always knew some did. It isn't really any more reassuring for anyone in the group likely to have more severe illness though.

anonacfr · 11/02/2020 11:29

Is it possible we are not hearing from recovered Chinese patients because they are censored by the government re discussing what is happening in hospitals (possible scenes of horrible deaths etc)?

HasaDigaEebowai · 11/02/2020 11:42

Nothingwrong They are stating that the transmission rate is between 3 and 4. So on average every person with it infects 3-4 other people. Clearly some will infect more and some fewer but on average 3-4 people.

Missillusioned · 11/02/2020 12:18

Well the doctor who first reported the virus didn't recover did he? And he was young and healthy. I suspect the death rate in China is higher than they're letting on

Dennisreynoldsduster · 11/02/2020 12:29

i suspect the doctor did not die of the virus at all, being a whistle blower...

Missillusioned · 11/02/2020 12:32

@Dennisreynoldsduster that is another possibility that had occurred to me.

This would still indicate that the Chinese authorities have something further to hide though - possibly a higher death rate than reported

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 11/02/2020 12:35

The death rate will be lower than reported because of the many unreported and undetected cases. Their numbers will water down the death rate.

I am still worried though.

KaptenKrusty · 11/02/2020 13:18

Also thinking the doctor didn't die of the virus tbh ! He may have just been taken care of for causing drama & spreading rumours...

StrangeLookingParasite · 11/02/2020 13:40

@TheNoiseHurts

Nice screeching tantrum, care to share your qualifications for that little telling off you gave me?

TruthOnTrial · 11/02/2020 13:53

The fact that the Chinese doctor who first raised concerns was effectively shut down and all his reports removed says all we need to know about China's handling of this.

Not for nothing are the streets empty and the economy all but shut down and hospitals being built within a matter of weeks! Anybody moving around in public has perpetual enforced temp readings taken.

I don't think thr issue here is how many have it, but that its now here and the infection rate is high, particularly worrying that this is also when there are no apparent symptoms.

I think its reasonable to keep public forays to essentials to limit the spread and to apply rigorous hygiene to any outside contacts. Avoiding close contact, although, if its airborne as suggested, masks are the only way.

The use of paper masks has been rubbished, yet everyone in china is wearing them. The only way to wtradicate the infection is to isolate until its gone, in the absence of knowing the source and cause of reinfection.

Newborns are tolerant to much that would kill an adult, their bodies are very different so some attacks won't harm. Lets hope this is one.

Absolutely no point in absolute panic, but stress is a way for the body to optimise its resources, low stress and high stress are not good. Optimum stress and doing things to keep bug free and minimising unnecessary contact while caronavirus is spreading here and around the world.

Its not flu, why the comparison? Confused

Its unknown, untreatable, and over here so its normal to feel streased about that. There'd be something wrong with you to not give serious consideration to your options when you see what its brought to China in terms of massive shut down (the figures are not worth the paper they're written on).

Theres always some saddos that like to come on threads like these to be nasty to others.

FoamingAtTheUterus · 11/02/2020 13:54

kaptenKrusty causing drama and spreading rumours ? They've closed off entire cities and are arresting people who are outdoors without a mask. They built a hospital in ten days........are you suggesting all of that is for nothing ? Have we seen this type of thing happen before ?

MyNameIsArthur · 11/02/2020 14:30

I used to live near there OP. Went to the school there!

I don't think you should worry. Make sure you all wash your hands frequently

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 11/02/2020 14:36

You can’t carry soap at water on the Tube with you.

ShanghaiDiva · 11/02/2020 14:42

You really believe China executed the doctor?
I don’t believe this. However, I would be concerned regarding actions that will, undoubtedly, be taken against the officials who tried to covering up: death penalty, prison?

ShanghaiDiva · 11/02/2020 14:49

@TruthOnTrial
I support the way China has tried to manage this outbreak. Many people there are making huge sacrifices: as medical personnel and those working in supermarkets to ensure we can access food and essential supplies.
The reason why everyone in China is wearing a mask is because it’s compulsory to wear one in all public places. Are they Effective? There is evidence that wearing a mask stops the wearer touching their face so frequently which is a positive. Also in China it is completely normal to wear a mask if you have a cold or cough so everyone wearing a mask is therefore a logical extension of this.

TruthOnTrial · 11/02/2020 15:24

I'm not sure why you felt the need to defend China to me.

Their actions tell us we need to take seriously don't they? Which is what I was saying.

But...and a big but...they are covering up, as proven by their actions; so I don't trust the numbers.

It's here now, so we need to each take personal responsibility for keeping ourselves away from contacts with the virus, and face touching!

paintedfences · 11/02/2020 15:27

hand washing is not going to stop the spread - the virus is thought to be aerosolised.

ALLMYSmellySocks · 11/02/2020 15:30

Globally this is a massive problem. If the death rate is around 1% which seems likely once you take account for milder cases that's obviously massive and its fairly infectious. The NHS would obviously not cope with the numbers of people requiring treatment for pneumonia and hundreds of thousands would die of its not contained. It's a big issue. That said the individual risk at present is still fairly low and can be mitigated further by using basic hygiene.

Blackandgreenteas · 11/02/2020 15:35

I do worry because my dd has a heart defect and asthma, which means she’s more at risk than others.

EwwSprouts · 11/02/2020 15:36

Explains the Chinese spraying empty streets.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 11/02/2020 15:59

I hope things are showing signs of working out for you and your family, ShanghaiDiva. Are you able to keep in touch easily enough, with your friends back in China? I hope they’re all well and safe. My heart goes out to the Chinese people living through this frightening experience and am so glad to see that the Chinese government and experts seem to be working with experts from other countries to try to solve this.

KaptenKrusty · 11/02/2020 16:20

You misinterpreted what I meant @ FoamingAtTheUterus

I am saying that he was initially silenced by the Chinese authorities for spreading rumours - they didn’t want the rest of the world informed of the virus - and being China and their bad track record of human rights I’d say he could have been killed in order to keep him quiet / saying the virus killed him was an easy explanation!

Anyway just a thought / I’m not got a second saying that the virus isn’t bad nor am I saying it’s made up

FoamingAtTheUterus · 11/02/2020 19:13

Kapten the point I was making was their government are spreading their own rumours by the actions they're taking.

I mean I'm pretty unflappable but in this instance I am quite concerned.......I also know a lot of people who are vulnerable to illness. Both adults and children and the reality is they probably wouldn't survive this.

VanGoghsDog · 11/02/2020 19:40

Well, logically, if they are trying to minimise the news, they would actually be pretending he's still alive!
