Ireland - wearing black armbands for a game near October 7th?

mids2019 · 05/10/2026 05:49

So the Irish football team thought it would be some sort of protest to wear black armbands for their recent mat h against Israel and guess what strangely the Israeli team wore black armbands for the victims of the worst terrorist atrocity in their country. So the Irish were left wearing black armbands for victims of the Israeli Gaza conflict but I guess not the victims of October 7th? No wonder the Israeli players were pissed. Ireland then dress and threw the dummy out the pram by saying they shouldn't be playing Israel again......pretty pathetic.

You can also see how for countries like Ireland October 7th is being erased from history as when they went for their black armband protest they probably very stupidly forgot about the proximity of a day of Israeli national mourning.

Waterford Whispers is in dire need of a proofreader

You should do a little poll of your own on your next trip to the home country @OpheliaWasntMad

I thought you were all much more aware about public opinions in Ireland (judging from comments on here ) So I thought I’d ask you guys. But never mind

It’s a bit juvenile. Maybe they’re school kids?

Boolabus · 16/10/2026 13:12

OpheliaWasntMad · 16/10/2026 12:32

Ok.
So maybe most people in Ireland disapprove of Rooney’s support for a terrorist group? That would be great

Most people in Ireland don't care. We're long past looking to the UK for any sort of moral guidance no idea why you seem to care so much what the Irish public think on it, want me to run a poll for you?

Boolabus · 16/10/2026 13:15

OpheliaWasntMad · 16/10/2026 13:04

Because they seem to have quite strong views about Palestine? And Rooney’s is a well known Irish author?

Paestine yes
Palestine Action based and active in the UK, most people? no, nothing to do with them.

Supporting a proscribed terrorist group is not a good thing. If a UK author was supporting a banned group in Ireland I think you would care
It’s a shame you don’t think Irish people care about Rooney’s support for PA.

SingingShrews · 16/10/2026 13:19

We do have quite strong views on Palestine but this is a minor story of a single author books being pulled in a foreign country. At a time of major public sector strikes here it isn't headline news, it's one of very niche interest.

If a UK author was supporting a banned group in Ireland I think you would care dulra
It would completely depend on the group and what they were banned.

Why is it a shame? Why do you even care what Irish people think on this? Just so you can continue with your negative fixation.

Dulra? Irish for nature fyi

Yep.
Bizarre to keep trying to force people to care about something that is actually specific and unique to UK and UK law.

Shame they didn't hold themselves to these standards when they were colluding with loyalist paramilitary terrorists

Honestly for a country that shrugs their shoulders at NI and acts like it's none of their business even though it's part of the UK, expecting us to give a shit about a minor newstory involving a single Irish person is a bit rich.

Yes we get that it's minor, she nothing of much interest usually but as we're on a thread with Irish people present discussing the anti semitism in ireland you'd think some would take the opportunity to criticise Rooney's financial support of this proscribed terrorist organisation. We're getting lots of yeah but no buts. No actual yes she shouldn't be doing that. It speaks volumes.

It speaks volumes

No gloriia what speaks volumes is the massive uptick in sales in the UK. So maybe focus on that a bit more. Why do so many in the UK not care that the money they are paying for a book is going to a UK proscribed terrorist organisations.? Why is that? What is that telling you as a UK citizen? Maybe reflect on that.

Irish people for all our bluster are a fairly compliant nation. We give out we protest we get our voice heard but we do for the most part stick to the laws of our state. We were one of the most compliant to restrictions during covid, despite having some of the strictest and many feeling they were too harsh but people stick within the law. So look to your country now as to why so many are happy to support an author supporting Palestine Action

That’s fair. It is a UK problem.
I think people in general don’t know enough about the threat posed by Palestine Action .

'Why do so many in the UK not care that the money they are paying for a book is going to a UK proscribed terrorist organisations.? Why is that? What is that telling you as a UK citizen? Maybe reflect on that.'

I absolutely condemn anyone lining Rooney's pockets so she can then support this proscribed terrorist group.

See, that's how you do it.

'The British Government were colluding with unionist terrorists'. Do you mean the British government were trying to stop republican and unionist gangs from killing each other?

Disclaimer The British army should never have been sent to NI. I think we can all agree on that.

OpheliaWasntMad · 16/10/2026 14:43

There are many legitimate Palestinian charities who help to ease the suffering of innocent civilians. It’s a shame that Rooney decided to support a violent terrorist group instead. It seems like a deliberate attempt to get headlines and publicity. It has worked for her obviously but it is not an honourable way to behave.

But what does this achieve though? Sally Rooney is being dealt with, her books are being removed from UK stores, that's the consequences of her actions. Job done no?

What is this new fascination on here with having to 'condemn' everything like little lemmings? Nobody lines up to say I condemn this random crime or that random crime but suddenly when Israel are on the periphery we all need to line up and 'condemn' it.

It's weird and ordering people to condemn random things isn't really something done in Ireland. It comes across as really authoritarian and not something we are used to or regularly partake in.

It's the double standards, I'm pretty sure you'd be condemning something you didn't agree with and again for the trillionth time it'd give some of you the opportunity to say no, I don't agree with supporting that kind of crap. Not asking you to get a placard out and go chanting anything.

As this thread is coming to it's conclusion I will repost the words of the Israeli Minister for National Security when speaking about the Palestinian people.

"They should be crushed to pieces, starved to death and not resuscitated with humanitarian aid that gives them oxegyn"

Ben Gvir, Israeli Minister for National Security
He is only one of many Israeli politicians who have spoken like this.

I say thank you to Macklemore, Kneecap, Fonataines DC, Aaron Rowe (who I came to listen to as a result of his brave decision and love his music) , Sally Rooney and many others. They keep using their platforms to highlight the plight of the Palestinian people.

Onwards and upwards for the Irish football team.

That’s not what she means. Look up the Stevens Inquiries @Gloriia.
Or there are several documentaries on the subject. Loads of newspapers articles.
