Ireland - wearing black armbands for a game near October 7th?

mids2019 · 05/10/2026 05:49

So the Irish football team thought it would be some sort of protest to wear black armbands for their recent mat h against Israel and guess what strangely the Israeli team wore black armbands for the victims of the worst terrorist atrocity in their country. So the Irish were left wearing black armbands for victims of the Israeli Gaza conflict but I guess not the victims of October 7th? No wonder the Israeli players were pissed. Ireland then dress and threw the dummy out the pram by saying they shouldn't be playing Israel again......pretty pathetic.

You can also see how for countries like Ireland October 7th is being erased from history as when they went for their black armband protest they probably very stupidly forgot about the proximity of a day of Israeli national mourning.

UK customers are buying her books from Irish bookshops as the UK government has forced Faber to stop supplying the UK market. So the demand is from UK customers. We in Ireland are free to buy her books.

An Irish poster posted upthread there had been an increase in sales from an Irish bookstore after her public support for Palestine action.

I would have thought the increase in book sales directly advocated support for her and her views? Unless there would be another reason?

Edited

What's wrong with buying her book?Anyway the increase in book sales was in the UK because her book isn't banned so anything still on the shelves people can buy but her publisher can't restock. There are also reports from Irish stockists that they've had an uptick in sales from UK online buyers.

Maybe next time research the topic better before coming in with your accusations against a nation of people

yes Kenneys are an Irish online retailer. They reported a significant upturn in orders from UK presumably because UK customers can’t buy in UK. By the way, she wrote Normal People (dramatised on Netflix) _

Still would like know how buying a Sally Rooney book is a sign your antisemitic 🤔

ColadhSamh · 15/10/2026 21:30

Bookshops across the North are posting that they will continue to sell Sally's books.
Good to see that Manchester City Council have refused to ban Fontaines DC concert in Heaton Park. Common sense prevails.

I think we must judge actions. Not words. This clearly shoes Irish anti- semitism and terrorist support in action.🤷‍♀️

Well the British courts keep chopping and changing so it’s hard to keep up but in the words of Sally Rooney “It’s important to bear in mind that the primary purpose of the Terrorism Act is not to criminalise acts of violence, which are already illegal, but to criminalise otherwise lawful acts of speech, association, financial dealings, and so on. These measures, which represent a significant infringement on free speech and other rights, were intended for use against armed groups that pose a serious threat to the public. The parliamentary debate on the Terrorism Act at the time of its passing testified clearly to this intention. The use of such measures against a protest group that poses no threat whatsoever to the public is totally unprecedented”

so by your logic David Irving is openly anti semetic and English, does that portray “English” anti semitism? Or is he an anti semetic person who is English?

Well nothing wrong with buying her book if you were going to buy it anyway but It's like the Mackelmore effect. Now people who have never heard of you before are suddenly fans and buying your books or going to your concerts. Because " Palestine". These people should research real genocides happening and stop their Jew/Israeli hate because it's not rational and it is the exact same thing that played out in 1930's Germany ( and we know the Irish history there). The intense focus on the only Jewish state defending itself against the worst attack against Jews since the Holocaust is just...weird. Why is Israel the only state not allowed to defend itself? If Glastonbury had been attacked and it was your teens slaughtered and raped by Islamist terrorist groups ( and palestinian CIVILLIANS) You would want them hunted down. Israel isn't perfect but it has done a lot to prevent civilian casualties. I really don't understand the Israel hate. It's the only democracy in the ME, it's LGBQ friendly, most people aren't even particularly religious.

I think Irish people in general don't much care about a group that is based in Britain and proscribed only in Britain.
@SingingShrewsI think most people outside of Mumsnet and the Daily Mail don't care much either.

Well you’re wrong about that. And given that you don’t live in England and I was given a hard time for giving an opinion about Ireland, I think you should defer to my view as I live in England.

Edit - that was meant for @SingingShrews

OpheliaWasntMad · 15/10/2026 21:51

I’ve read all of Rooney’s books. She’s a talented writer. That doesn’t mean she’s right in every issue.

I have read my post four times and I still can't see how it was so widely misinterpreted.

I can't read any of them because Normal People just brings back (bad) memories of lockdown.

Being Pro Palestine is pretty much the default here, an author, a musician, an artist etc speaking out about Palestine isnt really remarkable and wouldn't really be a reason people would suddenly start buying whatever it is they are selling. It isn't controversial to support Palestine, there isnt a section of society trying to shut down concerts or get people arrested or lose publishing deals. It isn't seen as radical or brave or anything else to support Palestine, it's just normal, the same as it's normal to support Ukraine. No Irish artists say I know what will get me more attention, saying that I support Palestine, everyone would just be like yeah I presumed you did.

Like people have been trying to say for the entirety of this thread Ireland is different to the UK. We aren't the same. Our culture is different. You can't look at what happens in the UK and apply that to Ireland. Not everything translates the same.

Treesnthings · 15/10/2026 22:03

I would be very concerned (as I think many in the UK are) if I lived in a country that banned authors because of her political beliefs. It’s sinister. Mein
kampf can legally be sold in UK but Normal People is banned.

So people there are just mindless supporting "Palestine' without any real education or knowledge of the history of the region. Macklemore and Kneecap definitely got more attention for their stance ( most people I know had never heard of either of them before😂 maybe I'm old though!)

Why is that your default though? My default is to support the Jewish people after 6 million of them were killed in the Holocaust. That only happened when "ordinary" Germans were taken in to the hatred in the same way the hamas/ iran propaganda campaign has basically achieved it's Oct 7th goal. For Hamas, the more Gazans killed, the better as they can increase anti- Israel propaganda. They don't care about the people, they're an Iran backed terrorist group. The Palestinian people have no chance at a good life unless the terrorists are removed. Why are people not campaigning for that? If any other country had an Oct 7th happen to them the world's response would have been different. Really think why.

Fgs - you live in a country that banned James Joyce and Edna OBrien.
Don’t try to take the high road on book banning.

And England might allow publication of Mein Kampf but they defeated the Nazis. So hats off .

Exactly and I was going to refer to that to strengthen my point, but am running out of steam. Those were dark times in Ireland - which is why I would be concerned if I lived in the UK now.

Sure, most people in Ireland are just mindless sheep, we don't have knowledge or education here, if only we could be deep thinkers like you 🙄

There is a whole thread right here, you are on it, about the reasons a lot of Irish people support Palestine. I'm not repeating 30+ pages.

Kneecap grew in popularity here after their film, the main effect they had here was boost in the interest in the Irish language in younger people. People found the world's reaction to their stance on Palestine amusing but it wasn't the reason they gained popularity here, that happened prior to the nonsense of people trying to cancel them. Again Ireland is different to the UK.

OpheliaWasntMad · 15/10/2026 23:02

Hopefully this thread will soon run out of steam.
I don’t like the way people jump on a bandwagon and that enables bullies to give a hard time to a vulnerable group. The Jewish community are vulnerable and it’s outrageous that they don’t feel safe in their own country.
To quote an Irish Jew - “ I thought I was an Irishman who happened to be Jewish . Now I realise I’m a Jew who happens to live in Ireland “

Its the same situation in the UK.
