Ireland - wearing black armbands for a game near October 7th?

mids2019 · 05/10/2026 05:49

So the Irish football team thought it would be some sort of protest to wear black armbands for their recent mat h against Israel and guess what strangely the Israeli team wore black armbands for the victims of the worst terrorist atrocity in their country. So the Irish were left wearing black armbands for victims of the Israeli Gaza conflict but I guess not the victims of October 7th? No wonder the Israeli players were pissed. Ireland then dress and threw the dummy out the pram by saying they shouldn't be playing Israel again......pretty pathetic.

You can also see how for countries like Ireland October 7th is being erased from history as when they went for their black armband protest they probably very stupidly forgot about the proximity of a day of Israeli national mourning.

It'd be hilarious if it wasn't all so very depressing. We've been told throughout that people in ni and ireland don't support terrorism, except some clearly do Confused

Must include the UK in that too obviously considering that's where the orders were going ...

Exactly. Palestine Action have nothing to do with Ireland, they aren't present in Ireland or a proscribed terrorist organisation in Ireland so any anger at their support should be directed at those in the UK who support them despite the British government proscription. This has nothing to do with Ireland but sure have a go anyway, why not.

How does an upsurge in people from the UK buying Rooneys books mean Irish people support terrorism Confused

Rooney is irish, she supports a terrorist organisation. Just because 'kenny' declares an increase in sales to the UK does not necessarily mean kenny is a reliable source.
Meanwhile, those on here who are apparently from ireland or NI don't condemn Rooney's support? So they must agree with her?

ColadhSamh · 15/10/2026 19:34

No one banned for supporting Palestine?

That is exactly what they are trying to do with Fontaines DC.
That is what they tried to do with Kneecap and failed more than once.

What Israeli government ministers said:

"" The children of Palestine brought it on themselves"
Israeli Knesset member Merav Ben Ari

"They should be crushed to pieces , starved to death and not resuscitated with humanitarian aid that gives them oxegyn"
Ben Gvir, Israeli Minister for National Security

"Mothers of all Palestinians should be murdered as they give birth to snakes"
Ayelet Shaked Former Minister of Interior Israeli government.

Are you suggesting that Irish people are in some way responsible for every decision another Irish citizen makes? She's a private citizen not our spokesperson. Do you apply the same standards to every other country or is it just the Irish that are meant to take the hit for every other Irish person because like we're all the same one big homogeneous group of people.

No idea where you got that from. People like Sally Rooneys so they agree with everything she does?

I personally think she's wrong to announce her financial support from UK book sales to Palestine action whatever we think of them they're a proscribed terrorist organisation in the UK and I don't support law breaking of any kind whether I agree with the law or not. As we've said it is people from the UK ordering her books in Ireland which is perfectly legal. She said her royalties from book sales in the UK would go to Palestine action so I assume any she sells through Irish booksellers won't

Obviously not.

Well that figures. A lot of pro Palestinians don’t seem to have too much of a problem with Hamas either. ( not talking about Irish - but pro Palestinians in general)

Edited to add - I mean in terms of their lack of condemnation/ their ignoring of October 7th/ the chanting/ the pulling down of hostage posters

Rooney is one person. I've never read any of her books, I don't know much about her tbh to have any thoughts on her.

You haven't condemned the Israeli fans racism and the players spitting at people, you just condemned Irish people over and over again so you must agree with it? That's how it works right?

A lot of pro Israelis don't seem to have a problem with what they are doing..
I mean in terms of lack of condemnation of the mass murder and displacement of civilians so its kinda six of one half a dozen of the others really now isn't it.

No one too bothered about her support for a terrorist group then?

I think we must judge actions. Not words. This clearly shoes Irish anti- semitism and terrorist support in action.🤷‍♀️

Doesn’t make either side right though does it?
I’ll happily condemn Netanyahu and his government’s actions. I hope that there is a fair and just reckoning.
I think Hamas is also responsible for the suffering of the innocent Palestinian civilians.

No it most certainly doesn't.
Human beings are all equal and pain and suffering is the same for everyone.

Hopefully at the upcoming elections the Israeli electorate will show it was just Netanyahu and his government not something entrenched in their society.

I think Irish people in general don't much care about a group that is based in Britain and proscribed only in Britain. It doesn't effect us in anyway whatsoever. Rooney isn't breaking the law in Ireland, she can do what she wants can't she? This really isn't our business, it seems like a UK issue to me.

Just to add to you said that this shows support for antisemitism? Were Palestine Action proscribed for being antisemitic? I don't think that they were so how is Rooney supporting them antisemitism?

@SingingShrewsI think most people outside of Mumsnet and the Daily Mail don't care much either.

I would have thought the increase in book sales directly advocated support for her and her views? Unless there would be another reason?

UK customers are buying her books from Irish bookshops as the UK government has forced Faber to stop supplying the UK market. So the demand is from UK customers. We in Ireland are free to buy her books.
