Ireland - wearing black armbands for a game near October 7th?

mids2019 · 05/10/2026 05:49

So the Irish football team thought it would be some sort of protest to wear black armbands for their recent mat h against Israel and guess what strangely the Israeli team wore black armbands for the victims of the worst terrorist atrocity in their country. So the Irish were left wearing black armbands for victims of the Israeli Gaza conflict but I guess not the victims of October 7th? No wonder the Israeli players were pissed. Ireland then dress and threw the dummy out the pram by saying they shouldn't be playing Israel again......pretty pathetic.

You can also see how for countries like Ireland October 7th is being erased from history as when they went for their black armband protest they probably very stupidly forgot about the proximity of a day of Israeli national mourning.

To be fair @OpheliaWasntMad has said that she does not believe the majority of Irish people support terrorism. The trouble is she has also indicated that she believes terrorist influences to be more relevant to people’s present support of Gaza than other historical events. So there’s a bit of a contradiction there. The reality is the Irish government have supported Palestine for decades, long before the current situation, while they concurrently outlawed the IRA.
Yes, if you’re a republican you’ll probably have even stronger sympathies, but most people in ROI would not describe themselves as such.

I meant Republican/ Nationalist views were the link - not support for terrorism. ( Although I accept that I expressed that badly because I gave the example of IRA and PLO links ) What I meant was that the Nationalist community saw parallels between their situation and Palestine.
I didn’t mean that most Irish were terrorist supporters .

I’m just as much a “victim” of the famine as you.

I believe it’s better to “move on” in the sense that Ireland is a successful and affluent country now and doesn’t need to see itself as a victim of a colonial oppressor .

I stand by that.
( I loved Maggie OFarrell’s Land by the way. )Obviously I agree with remembering the past. But I don’t agree with over indulging in victimhood. Every nation has had its traumas - many- like the Holocaust/ in living memory.

You can move on while retaining sympathy and empathy for others who find themselves in similar situations.

Colonial oppression shaped the Ireland we live in today. Acknowledging that is not ‘over-indulging in victimhood’.

Okay, thanks for the clarification.

Agree. The famine resulted in the population of Ireland going from 7 million to 3 million in the space of 10 years through death and emigration. It completely shaped how our country progressed from there both physically and psychologically. It is a key event in our history, we've clearly "moved on" from it as a modern society but you can't dismiss its impact. I actually think not enough if anything is known about it outside Ireland so Irish people have definitely not indulged in victimhood around it.

Why do you think I expect my view to hold so much weight?
Just expressing my opinion based on your posts

I don’t have anti Irish feelings
If you say so

While expressing your opinion you have included a number of personal attacks on me.
I haven’t reported anything yet but I will if it continues.

They're not personal attacks they are my views based on your posts. I've been very clear how your posts appear to me, I haven't said that's what you are or aren't, how would I know.
You have implied I'm antisemitic you did it this morning saying I was minimising what the Herbert hotel did, I don't view that as a personal attack I view it as your interpretation of what I said, so I clarified further. I would like to think you'd see my interpretation of your posts in the same light, disappointing I'm wrong.

Well, well, well. Who knew that a commonly used term in Ireland can result in a complaint and your post removed 😉 Water off a ducks back.

The zionist supporters across the UK will be happy to hear that Sally Rooney's books will no longer be available to them. Because of her support for Palestine. The censorship is digging deep. Glad to hear Sally is sticking to her principles. Disgusting to hear some of the anti Irish racism and bigotry emanating from some who are defending the ban, especially Adam Boulton on Sky. Not dissimilar to some comments I've read on here.

I saw that JRC are trying to get Fontaines D.C. gigs cancelled in Manchester because of their criticism of Israels actions in Gaza. They don't appear to have a history of saying anything offensive. Fortunately it seems the gigs will be going ahead anyway and the comments I've seen surrounding this from the UK are 95% wtf is this pathetic attempt at censorship?!

Never heard of her, will she be missed?

A quick Google tells me it isn't so much that she supports Palestine rather whe supports a proscribed terrorist organisation Palestine action which is illegal. She's even giving them money.

Hadn't heard that but no surprise. Fontaines DC are well known for their support for Palestine. They have linked up with Bohemians and sponsored some really classy football shirts for Palestine.

The more complaints the better. As we have seen with others it helps highlight the brutality of Israel. The protesters thinks it will damage the individual or group but it has the opposite effect. Aaron Rowe now has a whole new audience as has Kneecap, Beoga and others. A whole new audience will now read Sally Rooney as well. Win,win.

It also helps highlight the very strong anti Irish sentiments that still exist. Hidden but then erupts. Just like ....

Forgot to mention Sally ia a multi millionaire so I don't think she will be too bothered about one or two anonymous posters on MN not knowing who she is.

Yes it is the fact that she was planning to use proceeds from book sales to support Palestine action which is a proscribed terrorist organisation in the UK. But that's not what people will hear, the optics and sound bites of book banned will do more damage to the Israeli reputation than the UK sales loss to Sally Rooney.

Well it's what I found out on a quick Google. People aren't banned for supporting Palestine, quite the opposite.

I never said they were. But we all know people don't read beyond sensationalist headlines so it won't be Sally Rooney damaged by this decision. Far from it.

Trying to get artists banned or silenced such as Fontaines, Macklemore, kneecap etc has the complete opposite effect it makes absolutely no sense to me. It brings them notoriety and more exposure then ever, I just don't get it.

I don't either, the less attention given to scrotes like the Fountains and kneecap the better but here we are. Tbf the JRC requested they were banned and they aren't so all a bit of a non story really
I bet half of these 'punk bands' couldn't point to gaza on a map but it's a trendy cause. So they jump on the bandwagon and wave a flag.

This is NOT about Rooney’s support for Palestine it is about her support ( and funding for) Palestine Action which has been named as a terrorist group .

Im not quite sure why posters on here who have said they condemn terrorism are so quick to applaud Rooney for her support of a terrorist group.

The ban on Palestine Action has been agreed by the Court of Appeal
”the judges recognised the proscription of an organisation like Palestine Acton was "highly controversial" and that it was supported by "many otherwise lawful citizens".
But Baroness Carr added that it was "a fundamental mistake to overlook the fact that Palestine Action overtly promotes unlawful violence amounting to terrorism".
"It is not - as claimed - a direct action civil disobedience protest group like the suffragettes, operating transparently in the open," she added.
"It is a covert organisation which operates with secret cells to avoid the detection and prosecution of those using violence to destroy property and cause injury."
She said the group had neither disowned nor condemned three incidents* which took place before the ban was implemented and *were judged by ministers to amount to terrorism.”

General view of people stood outside the Royal Courts of Justice building in London. A number of Palestinian flags can be seen

Palestine Action ban is lawful, Court of Appeal rules

The Home Office had challenged a High Court ruling that the group's proscription should be quashed.

It'd be hilarious if it wasn't all so very depressing. We've been told throughout that people in ni and ireland don't support terrorism, except some clearly do Confused
