Ireland - wearing black armbands for a game near October 7th?

So the Irish football team thought it would be some sort of protest to wear black armbands for their recent mat h against Israel and guess what strangely the Israeli team wore black armbands for the victims of the worst terrorist atrocity in their country. So the Irish were left wearing black armbands for victims of the Israeli Gaza conflict but I guess not the victims of October 7th? No wonder the Israeli players were pissed. Ireland then dress and threw the dummy out the pram by saying they shouldn't be playing Israel again......pretty pathetic.

You can also see how for countries like Ireland October 7th is being erased from history as when they went for their black armband protest they probably very stupidly forgot about the proximity of a day of Israeli national mourning.

Absolutely awful, the poor family.

'The irony is that you’re accusing people of reacting aggressively while you generalise about an entire country'

That's a bit pot and kettle.

Many in ireland and some republicans in Northern Ireland generalise about an entire country all the time, England. The anti English rhetoric is very apparent. So you can generalise but others can't?

Now some are adding all Israelis to their hate (not on here but we've all seen it on sm) and are identifying with a conflict thousands of miles away because oppression and colonisation or some such.

So many chips on shoulders and issues that are being projected onto Israel.

I can see why the peace in NI is so very tenuous.

What anti English rhetoric? I live here, in the Republic, and can assure you it does not happen. It doesn't happen socially, in the media, in work, or in day to day life, that is my lived experience. If you have examples please expand. Yes, in sport there is a bit of black humour when Ireland beat England, but that’s less and less, and people in general keep it light hearted. It would be considered bad mannered and kind of ridiculous given that every Irish person has English cousins, aunts and uncles. And we can balance that with not forgetting our history, or as @Gloriia said, “oppression and colonisation or some such”.

Huge number of Irish people, myself included, are married to English people have English in laws, nephews, nieces etc. Huge number of English people, live, work and prosper well in Ireland, but yep we all hate them, must bring my husband up to speed on that one!

OpheliaWasntMad · 13/10/2026 08:54

No one has said “all Irish” are antisemitic or “all Irish” hate English people. That is just as ludicrous as dear Debbie’s claim that “there is no antisemitism in Ireland, the Irish people have nothing but love to share to the world.”

There is antisemitism in Ireland and, instead of acknowledging that fact, posters on here have chosen to attack posters who point this out. I think that level of denial is quite worrying. I feel sorry for the small community of Irish Jews who feel they have to mourn the victims of October 7th in private while thousands of Pro Pals choose to March with their anti Israel banners in that very day . How heartbreaking for them.

“I’m fed up of all the posts telling us how brilliant Ireland is and how badly they have suffered and how there is no antisemitism in Ireland.”

Classic definition of a strawman, @Ophelia.

If it’s strawmen you after this thread is riddled with them- there have been so many attempts to distort what has been said and paint any criticism of Ireland as anti-Irish. And you have been a major contributor to that.

Quoting from Rachel Moiselle

“Toni Morrison wrote that ‘the function, the very serious function of racism is distraction’ (and yes, I have no qualms about describing those who protest on October 7th specifically as racist antisemites). “

There has been a lot of distraction on this thread.

For those who believe that pointing out antisemitism in Ireland is somehow anti- Irish.

There really has. I am so confused by this. The article is referencing what is happening in England the picture is of English police officers, what has it to do with the Irish soccer team wearing black armbands at a soccer match?

There is antisemitism in Ireland and, instead of acknowledging that fact,
This has been acknowledged on this thread by me and others so I have no idea why you keep repeating that it hasn't.

I agree @Neverblackcurrant posts are designed to goad and provoke

If you read the article you will see it references antisemitism in Ireland. The writer lives in Ireland.
Im sorry if you think my posts are provocative - I feel I have been misrepresented on here and I guess that has made me a bit more punchy than usual.

But again wearing black armbands isn’t anti semitism? It’s not violent, it’s not insulting, it doesn’t target any religion. It’s a peaceful expression against what’s happening in Gaza.

There is a conversation to be had where criticism of Israeli actions in Gaza crosses into antisemitism and holding Jewish people responsible (which is wrong). But the wearing of black armbands isn’t where that it at.

So if in the troubles an English football team playing ireland or NI wore armbands to commemorate one of the many atrocities that the ira committed you'd have been ok with that?

I very much doubt it. There are ways of supporting a cause without being goady.

A fair comparison would be protesting against Irish government actions by wearing armbands.

The IRA do not represent the people of Ireland.
How much more of this?

I have said from the start that I have no problem with the Irish football team ( who were under enormous pressure to cancel the match ) . The black armbands are not the problem. The problem is the double standard - the fact that Ireland played Afghanistan without any protests. The fact that they allow numerous pro pal marches on Oct 7th.
Some victims seem to matter more than others .

Saw this story on X this morning.

The Herbert Park Hotel in Dublin's Ballsbridge neighborhood canceled a group reservation for 70 rooms booked for delegates attending an international conference on combating antisemitism in the Irish capital, according to a senior representative of Ireland's Jewish community.

No antisemitism in Ireland though, oh no.

Just shocking.

No 2 situations will be the same. The point is you don't, or you shouldn't, wear black armbands to goad the other team.

The israeli football team are not in government making decisions.

Dont the irish team understand good sportsmanlike behaviour? Apparently not.

@Gloriias post doesn’t make much sense otherwise.

You said yourself that
The IRA had close links to the PLO - In my opinion that is a much more recent connection between Ireland and Palestine than the Irish famine (as referenced by the PP).

You have rejected people’s explanations on this thread and instead suggested terrorist links or influence as a motivating factor.

But the IRA did have links with the PLO? And you can see that in the murals of Belfast. And that is a link that is much more recent than the famine .

You are wilfully misrepresenting my words if you are suggesting I said the IRA represent the people of Ireland.

You are also disingenuous in the way you say “I have rejected people’s explanations “ . I accepted that people can have a different view on the motivating factors. I am entitled to my view.

Sinn Feinn is a major political party and one of its founding principles is a United Ireland. They were widely regarded as the political wing of the IRA. That nationalism is the link with the Palestinian cause.

At no time have I said the IRA represent all , or many , Irish people. They are thugs who most Irish rightly condemn. I have said this several times .

You keep misrepresenting me.
