Conflict in the Middle East

Ireland - wearing black armbands for a game near October 7th?

mids2019 · 05/10/2026 05:49

So the Irish football team thought it would be some sort of protest to wear black armbands for their recent mat h against Israel and guess what strangely the Israeli team wore black armbands for the victims of the worst terrorist atrocity in their country. So the Irish were left wearing black armbands for victims of the Israeli Gaza conflict but I guess not the victims of October 7th? No wonder the Israeli players were pissed. Ireland then dress and threw the dummy out the pram by saying they shouldn't be playing Israel again......pretty pathetic.

You can also see how for countries like Ireland October 7th is being erased from history as when they went for their black armband protest they probably very stupidly forgot about the proximity of a day of Israeli national mourning.

The use of “mainland” by @OpheliaWasntMad says a lot in itself. Ireland isn’t an appendage of Britain, and the conflict didn’t happen in a vacuum. Of course British families suffered, nobody denies that. But British soldiers were part of a state military deployed in Northern Ireland, not just innocent lads caught up in something they had no part in. Irish families suffered decades of violence, discrimination and abuses at the hands of that military. You can acknowledge every victim without stripping away the context or pretending the power imbalance didn’t exist. A lecture about remembering the British side is tone deaf. .

Edited

To be honest I’m not really bothered about whether you think I’m tone deaf, arrogant, and ignorant. If it makes you feel better to rant then go for it.

It’s insulting because the wounds in N.I are still raw, people have died in this life time. And that’s on both sides. And it’s insulting to all of them.

Why are you talking like just one side, is speaking about the past? Do you even understand the tradition of the Orangemen marching?

Anyway - peace won in this case. I think we can all celebrate that.

I agree about celebrating the outcome of this case. It was the right decision

I’m not sure @Gloriia realises that the Orangemen are celebrating an event from 1690. Never mind that they are an organisation that is 100% sectarian.

And yet they only talk about Sinn Fein being “stuck in the past”

Not only celebrating an event from 1690 but an event that took place in what they say is a foreign country 😀. William was Dutch not British and is strongly believed to have been gay, something the OO is strongly opposed to. You really couldn't make it up.

OO is a bigoted, triumphalist, supremacist, sectarian organisation. It doesn't allow Catholics to join, forbids members from entering a Catholic Church, forbids women from being full members, forbids women ftom marching with men. Women are allowed to make tea and bake tray bakes.

This thread is riddled with misinformation and distortions. The Garvaghy Road march was born out of bigotry, sectarianism, triumphalism and supremacism. One of the very first marches that took place on that road resulted in 2 Catholic farm labourers being murdered by OO participants. There is a long history of attacks on Catholic families on that road.

'How about having a look at the images of the 12th of July marches which are allowed and tolerated every year to ensure peace is maintained.'

Well some in NI and ireland should look af the atrocities of Oct 7th before supporting pro pal marches. Any march will usually have an atrocity in its history so people should really accept all or none. We'll hear the same disingenuous excuses that they are supporting the civilians in gaza but waving a pally flag for a Jew is like wearing a balaclava in NI and saying you just want peace. Ways and means of doing with without being goady.

Disclaimer I don't support the orange men, nor the ira, nor 'resistance fighters' in gaza but my point is, again, stop being selective with what freedom of speech you allow.

Once Northern Ireland & ireland learn to live and let live they'll be halfway to stopping the sectarianism.

Edited because I just don’t get what you are comparing? The Palestinian flag is just that, a national flag. How is it like wearing a balaclava? I think no matter what you are always going to restart the clock and repeat the same tropes. I’m out.

I agree with you on that @Gloriia.

Did you miss the bit where posters told you that thousands of orange marches are allowed in NI every year?

Once Northern Ireland & ireland learn to live and let live they'll be halfway to stopping the sectarianism.
Ireland(ROI) and Northern Ireland are very different places. I’m not sure you appreciate that.

This is very sad. The Irish Jewish community should not need to hide their mourning like this .
I’m fed up of all the posts telling us how brilliant Ireland is and how badly they have suffered and how there is no antisemitism in Ireland. It’s either naive or totally self absorbed.

Neverblackcurrant · 12/10/2026 13:20

That’s terrible and I hate that happened in secret 😞
Yours is a strawman argument though @OpheliaWasntMad.

This thread demonstrates what I mean. It’s not a straw man. Every time anyone says there is antisemitism in Ireland the pushback is incredibly aggressive and the accusations of anti Irish bigotry start flying around.
It’s evident on here.

Classic definition of a strawman, @Ophelia.

The irony is that you’re accusing people of reacting aggressively while you generalise about an entire country. Ireland isn’t above criticism, and noone denies that there is documented evidence of anti-semitism, but that does not mean Ireland should be smeared as an anti-Semitic country. Apply the same standards to everyone.

You said yourself earlier that the Irish people you know are not anti-Semitic. Where is the aggressive denial on this thread that it exists in Ireland (not including those who say they just don't know anyone from the Jewish community, I agree that is not evidence)?

Acknowledging Ireland’s history and suffering doesn’t mean denying anyone else’s, and criticising Israeli government policy doesn’t make someone antisemitic.

There are a select few on this thread who seem to expect Ireland to erase it's history to make them more comfortable. .

If you say so.
There was a post on here that criticised you for protecting “baby killers” ( now deleted)when you said it was wrong for pro pals to March on 7th October. There has been a lot of hysterical frothing in this thread . Not a lot of concern about antisemitism in Ireland though.

Hmm.
You have accused me of things I haven’t done repeatedly. Apparently I am an arrogant tone deaf bigot 😆.
Maybe you should actually read through the thread more carefully.

I haven't made personal comments about anyone, I'm responding to words not people or personalities.

I said "A lecture about remembering the British side is tone deaf." I said there were examples of arrogant attitudes on the thread (I didn't say you are arrogant).

Therattt · 12/10/2026 15:26

I find Irish ( and Scottish) people to operate under a veil of anti- semitism. But they don't really realise that they're doing it. When you call them out they have bizarre excuses. The IRA history definitely influences it.

Edit- I'm talking about NI not the ROI x⁶

Funnily enough the words are attached to the people who say them. And using phrases like “lecture” and “tone deaf” comes across as a bit critical… perhaps it me ? 😉

Neverblackcurrant · 12/10/2026 15:48

Yes, I’m wasting far too much time I’m afraid 😅

However, I’m not the one who resurrected this thread by more or less saying ‘look at this terrible situation [and it was], but all Irish people can say is that Ireland is brilliant and there’s no anti-semitism’.

That’s a) not true and b) designed to provoke, to goad.

There are loads in N.I who are passionate supporters of Israel?

What history do you think influences that?

Except that I didn’t say “Irish people” did I? I said the people oh this thread. I don’t think the posters on here represent all Irish people. Do you?
And you don’t have to respond every time I post - unless you want to of course .
As for goady - I think that’s a bit rich given what’s been said on here and what’s going on for Jews in Europe at the moment.
People in here have said Oct 7 was unfortunate and have called you a sympathiser with baby killers …
But I’m the goady one …

I've been to Ireland many times in my life, it is an amazing country that has suffered badly at the hands of my ancestors for many years now and as a result the people there know a thing or two about fighting for justice against Tyranny. There is no antisemitism in Ireland, the Irish people have nothing but love to share to the world.

Absolutely awful, the poor family.

'The irony is that you’re accusing people of reacting aggressively while you generalise about an entire country'

That's a bit pot and kettle.

Many in ireland and some republicans in Northern Ireland generalise about an entire country all the time, England. The anti English rhetoric is very apparent. So you can generalise but others can't?

Now some are adding all Israelis to their hate (not on here but we've all seen it on sm) and are identifying with a conflict thousands of miles away because oppression and colonisation or some such.

So many chips on shoulders and issues that are being projected onto Israel.

I can see why the peace in NI is so very tenuous.
