Conflict in the Middle East

Is the green party starting to regret it's association with Islamists?

The green party, ostensibly about climate protection and general progressive values seems to have gotten into bed with Islamist sympathisers and the amount of anti semitism and basic hatred of their own country is now obvious.

The green party now at least locally are known as a party that has sympathies towards all manner of Islamist causes including Hamas's objective to wipe Israel of the face of the Earth.

Wouldn't be surprised if they produce a motion declaring climate change a Jewish conspiracy........

No I haven't said that at all. Don't put words into my mouth I didn't say.

Then what is the point of talking about the treatment of Jews by other Muslims.

Squeezingwildoranges · 17/10/2026 16:57

inamarina · 17/10/2026 16:50

You keep asking people if they think all Muslims are the same, it’s getting quite tiresome.

Nobody says they are, yet the vast majority of Muslim-majority countries in the Middle East share a documented, historical hostility toward Jewish minorities.

The fact that you have to rely on Azerbaijan as a rare exception says it all.

Really. Compared to Europe's historical hostility.

As rants against Muslims go, that was quite impressive. So now we are to digress into a sociopolitical discussion of government. Why hasn't Ukraine had elections?

LOL for twenty-one years? How would events in 2023 have prevented elections in 2019, 2013, 2017 or 2021?

That's very different to the delay in Ukraine, which is closer to how the UK postponed its scheduled 1940 general elections due to World War II, and kept a wartime coalition government. A general election was only held in 1945, once military victory was secured and governance could return to democratic norms. Like Ukraine's 2024 date, which clearly couldn't happen when Russia controlled parts of the country and was bombing much of the rest.

Plus of course any delay due to Oct 7th would only be true for Gaza anyway - it can't possibly explain why the West Bank has also chosen to delay and delay for two decades.

Nah. The Oct 7th invasion is just the latest in a long list of excuses as to why there haven't been elections in the West Bank for over 20 years. Or Gaza.

Ukraine last held elections in 2019 whereas Abbas was elected in 2005. Hardly comparable is it?

Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022 which is why there have been no elections since.

Why is it not comparable. Ukraine have been fighting against a potential occupation for 4 years. Palestinians have been fighting occupation since 1967, by UN resolutions.

Which of the points pp made are incorrect?

And are you really comparing Ukraine, which postponed elections because it is in the middle of a defensive war, with Gaza, whose government hasn’t allowed its people a vote in 20 years?

Gaza has been at war and under occupation since, at the latest, 1967. Mowing the grass every year or so by the IDF makes a stable democracy a bit difficult.

Between October 2005 and October 2023 there was not a single Israeli in the Gaza strip, so that's a load of nonsense.

Really. Compared to Europe's historical hostility.

I’m primarily talking about the hostility today.

Also, what does Europe have to do with this? If there were a one-state solution, it wouldn’t be Europeans that Israeli Jews would have to deal with.

I think Israel decided they need to take them out as they didn't really want them to be in the worlds largest open air prison. Imagine if Israelis stayed in Gaza. They would be subject to the same limited calories and regular bombardment by the IDF.

That you have no evidence to support your view that Jewish people would not be discriminated against in a Muslim majority country.

Plenty of evidence that they could be.

So that is an excuse to continue a systematic persecution, subjugation and disenfranchisement of millions of people who are indigenous to the land is it.

Gaza was not in a state of active, full-scale war for the nearly two decades between 2006 and 2023.
Ukraine didn't stop holding democratic elections after Russia occupied Crimea in 2014, so occupation is a weak excuse.

As for IDF's military operations in Gaza – I wonder how much ‘mowing the grass’ would have actually happened if Hamas hadn't continuously used Gaza as a launchpad for rocket attacks against Israeli civilians.

I am on the side of human rights, dignity, self determination and universal suffrage. I abhor lies, hypocrisy, entitlement, oppression and in this case, psychopathy.

Do I really need to list the years Israel mowed the grass in Gaza.

You’re deflecting again.
The discussion was about elections, not living standards in Gaza.
Hamas could have held elections in Gaza before 2023, yet they chose not to.

"on the side of human rights, dignity, self determination and universal suffrage" - but not for women. Because a place run by a party called "Islamic Resistance" is not interested in any of those things.

Which is why they have only had one election in Gaza, imposed on them in 2005 by Israel, after which they murdered their Palestinians opponents just to be sure.

As for the idea that women should have a right to decide what sort of government they might like, well that's a dangerous western notion. Can't be having that.

Funny they were able to organise an attack on Israel but ont - according to you - a single election in 20 years.
Gosh it's almost as though elections aren't a priority for them compared to the joy of raping and murdering Israelis.

Yes, historical and current.

Again, what relevance do historical European attitudes towards Jews have for a one-state solution? Israeli Jews wouldn't be sharing a newly created state with Europeans.

It's a reason to seriously question why you are pushing for a one state solution when you know Jewish people are discriminated against in every existing Muslim majority country with the one exception being the secular state of Azerbaijan.

I am not deflecting again. Have a look at history. Democracy is actually a societal luxury. At times of war, like Ukraine, elections are often paused. The Palestinians actually believed that after the Oslo accords, there was a glimmer of hope for their future. It did not take long for them to realise that the promises made by Israel were, as usual, totally disingenuous and performative for the international community. You really think democracy is at the forefront of your average Palestinians mind. In the UK, a mother worries if their child is going to come home from school with good marks. In Palestine, a mother worries if her child is going to come home from school.

It’s an ‘excuse’, or rather, a bloody good reason, not to agree to a one-state solution.
