Conflict in the Middle East

Worrying reports of Iran attacks on Kuwait and wider regional tensions

Iran is firing at various countries tonight, Saudi and Kuwait.

Kuwait confirms its main border crossing with Iraq has come under repeated attack.

Seems Iran wants to drag in other countries. Hitting a border crossing between Iraq and Kuwait isn't US targets.

It doesn't feel like the situation is improving at all. I feel for the people in the middle of this.

I wonder if this might be the start of Armageddon? JW have been saying this is coming for years. Interesting.

I like the way channel 4 news consistently refer to it as “this war of choice” as in Israel and America literally chose to start a war. A war that the rest of the world is paying a price for.

Does that mean Iran can behave how they want and attack other countries as much as they want and target desalination plants?

GentleSheep · 24/07/2026 12:04

I don't believe it's Israel who are trying to dominate the whole region, they have developed nuclear capabilities because they want to remain safe in the area. Let's face it, they're surrounded by mainly hostile nations. Without their nuclear deterrent likely Israel would have been wiped out long ago.

The IRGC would love to wipe out Israel, the US and probably most of the western world but they're confined to their region apart from the activity of terrorist cells sleeping in countries they hate. Of course the IRGC are full of bluster but then so is Trump! Remove Trump and possibly any incoming president will call a halt to the war. Remove an aytollah and there are plenty more willing to carry on. The US will have to inflict a lot more damage than it's currently doing, or the people of Iran will have to rise up and fight a bloody war, no doubt with mass casualties to remove that regime. Doesn't seem likely right now.

Also, the UAE are trading with Iran again!

RedTagAlan · 24/07/2026 12:08

And we see what happens @MissyB1

A poster takes the time to post why targets are seen as legitimate, and some folk totally ignore that, do not challenge the reasoning, and just go back down a rung of the ladder to pre explanation time.

I might watch "The Dambusters" tonight. It's on my local streaming service. I usually watch it on a Sunday for some reason, but hey ho.

SadiraOfTyr · 24/07/2026 12:08

Well of course they are - Trump has restarted the war in his endless pump-and-dump oil price grift and so Iran are retaliating in the only way they can: attack US allies in the hope that they try and get Trump to see sense.

The point is they should never have been invited to. Israel and America literally invited Iran to prove what they can actually do, did they think Iran would roll over? Seriously? And by the way bombing a school and killing 164 little girls isn’t exactly acceptable either is it?

TheOriginalSpacecadet · 24/07/2026 13:16

I live two miles away from RAF Fairford which Iran has now said is a legitimate target, at this point im
feeling physically sick with worry

No - bombing a school isn’t acceptable of course. I do believe it wasn’t done on purpose but even so, it’s not acceptable that could happen and did happen.

Is it acceptable for Iran to target Kuwait’s desalination plants do you think?

The US are at it too. This happened on the 16th July:

A US strike on a water desalination plant in Iran's southeastern coastal village of Bunji, in Hormozgan province, has left around 10,000 without water, a provincial official said on Saturday.
The attack “completely disrupted the supply of drinking water to 20 villages with a population of about 10,000 people," Iran's semi-official news agency Tasnim quoted the CEO of the Hormozgan Water and Wastewater Company as saying.
"These villages are facing a water shortage crisis," added the official.
Tensions have heightened in the Middle East, where the US and Iran continue to exchange attacks in recent days.
The military escalation comes despite a Pakistan-brokered memorandum of understanding signed in June to end the war and reach a lasting peace agreement.

Are any of you prepared to answer the simple question of Is it acceptable for Iran to target Kuwait’s desalination plants?

I will condemn the US for hitting the school and also for hitting a desalination plant. Will you do the same re Iran targeting desalination plants?

JadeHare · 24/07/2026 14:54

Nothing about this war is acceptable. Didn’t need to be a war in the first place though and it hasn’t achieved anything.

I'll take that as a No then from you as you do not appear willing to condemn Iran for targeting Kuwait's desalination plants.

Still interested to hear responses from others too like @MissyB1 and @RedTagAlan

It’s not acceptable for the US to bomb desalination plants in Iran. It’s not acceptable for Iran to retaliate by bombing desalination plants in Kuwait. What have you gained from me saying that?

It’s not acceptable that the US and Israel started this war of choice either, but here we are.

I will condemn both hitting desalination plants and the attack on the girls/boys school. Not just a girls school, boys were educated there too. I posted about the school on it's own thread.

I think Trump is dangerous. I think his war on Iran wasn't thought through thoroughly.

I also think the Iranian regime is awful for its people. Easy to turn eyes away from what happens in Iran to women and girls, people who protests (thread on a poor young lad executed for merely sheltering protesters, didn't get much interest). It's awful too that they find, train and arm terrorists in the wider middle east and we're all supposed to ignore that too. Their power, tyranny and spread of terrorism has impacted on many countries and people in the middle east. But hey ho, who cares.

So will I and it shouldn't be hard to get everyone on this thread to condemn both.

Anyway thank you @JadeHare for saying it’s not acceptable for Iran to retaliate by bombing desalination plants in Kuwait.

It lets me know you're worth debating with because you can see fault on both sides, which cannot be assumed on this board.

Ihatetomatoes · 24/07/2026 15:48

RedTagAlan · 24/07/2026 10:43

Quote : "Otherwise, why attack a desalination plant in Kuwait on more than one occasion. Its supposed fight is with the US, but it prefers to attack smaller countries."

I am not defending Iran here, but strategically it does make sense for them to strike Kuwait, because there are approx 13.5k US troops there, which include " three major bases—Camp Arifjan, Ali Al Salem Air Base, and Camp Buehring—which collectively function as the logistical backbone for all US Central Command (CENTCOM) operations spanning from Egypt to Afghanistan."

Source for Italicized part:

US Military Base in Kuwait 2026 | Statistics & Facts - The World Data

And yes, even striking desal plants is strategically ok, and not an automatic war crime if the desal plants feed into these bases.

There is a bit of a potential double standard here. Because some nations say it is ok to strike civilian areas because the military is hiding there. Or embedded as it's often described. And we do know from earlier in the war that in the UAE ( I think), the US had put it's troops into hotels and empty offices because of damage to a US base there.

There was a strike on the Kuwait airport earlier too. And it turns out the target was a CIA depot in the airport. Effectively, the US was embedded in civvie areas. And it is basically not being very well reported what is hit. So we don't really know what the target is. I think we only found out about the Kuwait airport target because some troops were killed.

Looking at it objectively, the aim in any war is to deprive the enemy of resources. And both sides are doing that.

I understand what you are saying. From a tactical viewpoint it makes sense.

I don't think any 'side' should attack desalination plants though. I wish the 'warfare' was contained to military targets on both sides. I understand the fears of Iran gaining a nuclear weapon since they might use on friends in the area as well as enemies, afterall they are currently attacking friendly neighbours.

As you mentioned, they might be attacking friendly neighbours to get pressure put on Trump, it could also ramp things up and more countries enter the war. Kuwait, Saudi, etc have used restraint, they may choose to fire back then even more people die.

Quote : " I wish the 'warfare' was contained to military targets on both sides. "

Agree. But I would expand that to I wish there was no wars overall.

I think when we look objectively at what Iran are doing, we need to remember that this is potentially existential for them. In terms of government, and also potentially way of life. For Trump it's just a political jaunt. Maybe a vote winner. Who knows really, he is all over the place.

What Trump has not done is say what he plans for Iran's future if he wins. And all we have to go on with that is Venezuela. And wtf has he done for the people there. Eff all. He removed one dictator and the number 2 took over. Where is the talk of election ? Nowhere. All he does is boast he has their oil.

What does that say to the 90 million people of Iran ? A good proportion of who know of nothing else but their country and their system.

So I ask myself what would I do to keep Trump out ? And hitting the water supply that Trumps army uses would be right up there.

And I get it. If Iran has nukes then the situation could be existential for Isreal. Of course I get it, but there was a deal in place. And Trump dropping bombs on a country the size of western Europe does not seem to me the best way to deal with that threat.

It's a bit like my DD's turtle really. She got it as a wee kid, and it's now a foot across and has become mine now it seems. I cleaned it's tank today. If Iran was that Turtle, the Obama way was to feed the turtle, to tempt it out of it's shell with a bit of food and freedom. Try to make it a happy turtle. But the Trump way, is to bash it on it's shell and crap in it's tank. That makes the turtle pull back into it's shell. And it makes an angry turtle.

By the way. I would love to set the turtle free. But I can't. It's an invasive species. And that might be another similarity to Iran.

I do notice something Iran has not done. It has not attacked the US mainland via sleeper cells. I think that says a lot about their capability. Because to listen to Trump and the hawks, one would think Iran has regiments of willing people ready to do all sorts in the US. But nowt.

I could tell you a lot about the End Times but it's probably not the right place in this thread! Suffice to say that things are moving in the direction prophesied in the Bible, the next 'big war' will be the Ekekiel war involving Iran, Turkey, Russia, Libya and a few more nations that escapes me for now, who will all plot together to invade Israel. Remember this was prophesied around 2500 years ago when there was no nation state of Israel! It's been fascinating watching things unfold at speed over the past couple of years. Trump is unwittingly pushing things along 'nicely'!

Of course it's not! But you know anything goes during a war, despite it not being humanitarian or whatever the human rights rules say today. Regimes can and will do whatever is needed to 'win', playing dirty is one way to push things in that direction. The Russia/Ukraine was is a good example of that.

I knew you would say it's not acceptable for Iran to target Kuwait's desalination plants, GentleSheep. You do come across like you take a balanced view generally, albeit we do not agree on religion. Others choose not to answer the question.

I can't see that "anything goes during a war" would be accepted were we talking about the Gaza war and believe that Iran should be held accountable if they are committing war crimes. Which it seems they likely are with their attacks on Kuwait water desalination plants, for example.

As should the US be held accountable for bombing 2 desalination plants in Iran during this war. Doubt it will happen though.

Understanding the war with Iran 101.

Who dragged Iran into this war?

I do think there seems to be a degree of inevitability with the Iran war. I mean they’ve been fighting using proxies for so long and Donald Trump lacks impulse control you can almost hear him saying we need to cut the head off the snake and didn’t that work out well?
