Conflict in the Middle East

Trump is desperate. How can he resolve the Iran shitshow?

1000 replies

TooBigForMyBoots · 06/04/2026 00:32

He is flailing, desperate and increasingly unhinged. Weakening the USA, alienating allies and strengthening the enemies of democracy with every step.

How can he fix this?
Can he fix it at all?

Polls of Israeli civilians show a majority are in favour of Israel’s war on Iran and Lebanon

‘According to the poll, published by the Israeli Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) on Sunday,
61 percent of respondents said they opposed the ceasefire,

announced 90 minutes before United States President Donald Trump’s apocalyptic deadline on Tuesday, in which he had promised to launch devastating attacks on Iran’s civilian infrastructure. Additionally, 73 percent said they expected fighting with Iran to restart within the next year

And the majority of respondents – 69 percent – said they support continued military action in Lebanon, irrespective of talks between the Lebanese and Israeli governments

The US and Iran wanting peace matters very little unless Israel is completely on board

Twiglets1 · 15/04/2026 12:23

Why does the US and Iran wanting peace matter very little to ending the Iran war unless Israel is completely on board? The US and Iran are the 2 main players in that war.

Yes Israel & Hezbollah will likely carry on attacking one another in Lebanon & Israel, unless it is a condition of the US/Iran peace deal that they stop. However, Lebanon is a separate country so that could be considered a separate issue to peace between the US, Iran and Israel.

Israel and Lebanon have had a historic initial face to face first meeting and it looks like they will enter their own negotiations re a peace deal between those 2 countries.

He is saying now that Iran would have taken over the mid east last year, if not for him. So I suppose Lebanon should be happy it's not already part of Iran ?
From CNN

"President Donald Trump claimed that he stopped Iran from taking over the Middle East in an interview with Fox News, adding that Gulf countries were not “expected to be hit” amid the war.
“They were going over to take over the Middle East, and we stopped them,” Trump said in the interview that aired this morning, claiming that his country’s strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities last summer prevented this.
The president also said that if the US did not strike Iran last year, Tehran would have attacked countries across the Middle East within weeks and again criticized the Obama administration’s 2015 Iran deal.
“They would have had a nuclear weapon within one month, maybe two weeks, and they would have used it on Israel and the Middle East. And they would have used it on us too - and not just Israel, by the way, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, countries that were shocked when they got hit,” Trump said, referencing Tehran’s retaliatory strikes on Gulf countries since the US and Israel began the Iran war on February 28.
“You know, these countries were not expected to be hit, because they were going after those countries. They were going over and take over the Middle East, and we stopped them,” he said."

Nothing says you're engaging in meaningful peace negotiations than continuing to bomb the other party involved in the 'peace' negotiations.

Lebanon does not deserve to be trapped in a recurring cycle of violence’: UNHCR
UNHCR chief Barham Salih is calling on the international community to provide urgent support to Lebanon, as Israel battles the country where more than one million people are displaced.
“I call upon the international community to provide urgent support and relief to Lebanon,” he said after meeting Lebanon’s PM Nawaf Salam.
“The humanitarian consequences of this war are immense, and I emphasise the need to spare civilians and civilian infrastructure from the ravages of attack. Lebanon does not deserve to be trapped in a recurring cycle of violence, it deserves support and stability.”

Trump claims China is happy he is ‘permanently opening’ Strait of Hormuz
Trump claims that China and the US are working together and that Beijing is happy that he is opening the Strait of Hormuz.
“China is very happy that I am permanently opening the Strait of Hormuz. I am doing it for them, also – and the World. This situation will never happen again,” Trump said in a social media post.

Trump appeared in a white baseball cap from his Mar a Lago club to announce that the United States had launched attacks on Iran. “Our objective is to defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime,” Trump claimed. Experts were skeptical that Iran had gotten very far in rebuilding its nuclear program, severely damaged in attacks the previous summer. US intelligence estimates contradicted the claim that Iran was near to acquiring the capability to strike the United States. A US intelligence estimate claimed Iran could develop an ICBM capable of reaching the United States by 2035.

Well, I did mention the other day that PRC had a prominent article about rare earths. And I mentioned that the PRC has approx 90% of the worlds rare earth processing capacity. I have not seen that quote you posted. But I saw another where Trump said Xi is very nice, and that Xi said he is not arming Iran.

I doubt China said what he claims they did. But given they do get a lot of oil from Iran, I can only assume Trumps blockade does not apply to them ?

I suspect, just my opinion, that they likely said, " Nice arms industry you have there Mr President. It would be a shame if it could not get rare earths for it".

Twiglets1 · 15/04/2026 14:03

Israel aren't engaged in peace negotiations with Lebanon yet.

The two countries have just held their first diplomatic talk since 1993.

A US statement said the two sides had agreed to launch direct negotiations, "at a time and place to be determined".

I am sure Trump has evidence to back up his claims. I mean he can't be making stuff up can he ?

Well, he is always making stuff up. But not this surely ?

I goodwill visit no doubt. To help the Gulf nations keep their hotels going now that their tourist trade is gone.

Qatar did give him a 400 mil jumbo after all. Although it was a "doer upper", that needed a billion bucks worth of work done to it.

No, no. My cat told me those troops are there to reverse the Dubai real estate fire sales. I trust what my cat tells me more than I trust what's coming from Trump.

I got my idea from Yes Prime Minister. " A victory for democracy". The one with St Georges Island.

-He seemed to think that 800 paratroopers was an awful lot to send on a goodwill visit
-No, it's just an awful lot of goodwill.

Ahhh, I was living overseas during the years Yes Minister was aired. I've been meaning to watch it, as it's now such an iconic part of British culture. (I can tell you when Anak, Anak was No 1 all over SE Asia tho).

I don't disagree that Brexit was and continues to be an economic disaster, but how is it the Tories for giving voters the democratic choice of whether they wanted Brexit (and a worse economy) or not?

Unless of course you think that some voters are too dumb to be allowed to vote on important matters such as Brexit.

Indeed as much as Brexit certainly damaged the economy, the Green Party economic policies would damage it far more if for example they were in a coalition government with Labour.

Greens? Pure Whataboutery! 3 years away from a GE.

But we certainly need "change" the current 2 parties in power have made a pigs ear of this country.
The economic policies of the last Tory were a disaster and Labour aren't doing much better.

On the EU referendum, of course the Tories to blame, do you think we should get a vote on Nuclear weapons? NATO membership? being in the UN? FTA's?

The country would grind to halt... well more than it is already doing.

Its not a question of being "too dumb" as you put it, its that EU membership is extremely complex.
I'm sure you have learnt a great deal about the EU and its functions over the last few years? as has almost everyone.

I mean, even the Tory Brexit minister at the time, didn't appreciate how important Dover was to UK trade..... and he is a lot brighter than most.... (i hope)

Iran are threatening to close the Red Sea if Trump continues to block the SOH

They have declared the blockade a ‘prelude to a ceasefire violation’

‘Ali Abdollahi, the commander of Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, said ..
If the US persists, he warned, Iran’s armed forces would not allow “any exports or imports” through the Persian Gulf, the Sea of Oman or the Red Sea ‘ - it handles about 15% of global trade

Even if Israel stops bombing Lebanon, they're not going to give up a square inch of the land they've stolen to extend their borders.

This would go against all of Israel’s history, where they have several times taken land after having been attacked and have given it back in exchange for peace agreements.

There’s a reason Israel aren’t attacking Egypt or Jordan, despite having previously taken and then given back large areas of those two countries.

But who cares about reality, eh?

I disagree

They won’t be giving it back

As of April 2026, Israel has stated its intention to maintain control over a significant security buffer zone in southern Lebanon, extending to the Litani River, rather than returning the land for peace. Defence Minister Israel Katz vowed to destroy homes in border villages, intending to permanently prevent residents from returning to a zone meant to secure northern Israel.

  • Goal of Control: Israel plans to control this territory to eliminate threats from Hezbollah, including [radwan forces], and to maintain control of the area even after the conflict ends.

They won’t give it back unless/until they have reason to be confident in a peace agreement.
Like with Jordan and Egypt.

In hindsight, they gave Gaza back too readily - look at the result of that.
