In fairness to the IRGC ( never thought I would say those words) they did warn that it would take time for the message of the ceasefire to reach everyone in their organisation.

I hope this is the case and that all attacks stop within a few hours.

🙏

Iran Deal By Obama:
•Strait of Hormuz open for free
•Iran limits Uranium enrichment
•Iran agrees to make no nuclear weapons
•Iran allows Int'l inspectors to ensure compliance
•Inspectors confirm Iran's full compliance

Iran Ceasefire By Trump:
•Strait of Hormuz closed, only open for $2M Per Ship
•Iran makes no guarantee of limit on uranium enrichment
•Iran makes no guarantee of no nuclear weapons
•Iran makes no guarantee to allow Int'l inspectors

And lifting of sanctions. Under Obama it was to be done in stages as a "reward" for sticking to the deal. Under Trump ..... near all in ..... 2 weeks. Or so it appears.

So much winning.

BerthaPotts · 08/04/2026 11:39

Trump capitulated to Iran.

BerthaPotts · 08/04/2026 11:40

Starting this war has been a big mistake for him and the Americans.

FloralDeerPattern · 08/04/2026 12:20

Spains pm sums up really well a lot of peoples feelings on this I think. Fair play to him for saying it out loud I wish more governments would follow.

“Ceasefires are always good news.

“Especially if they lead to a just and lasting peace.

“But this momentary relief cannot make us forget the chaos, the destruction, and the lives lost.

“The government of Spain will not applaud those who set the world on fire just because they show up with a bucket. What’s needed now: diplomacy, international legality, and P EACE.”

Pacificsunshine · 08/04/2026 13:26

To be fair, Obama paid Iran $1.7B.

To be fair, Obama paid Iran $1.7B.

It was their money. And they would have had to pay it back because of a court order. Obama did not pay them anything.

It is called doing a deal.

That's not a fair comparison.

The terms of the final deal have not been agreed yet so we don't actually know what the final deal will look like.

This is just the start of negotiations where both sides are airing their demands and intense negotiations will start on Friday. Iran won't get everything their own way and neither will the US.

Good point, the way things have been done over the last 5 weeks, there is zero guarantee of any final deal or even the ceasefire holding...

The World might be desperate for an end to this debacle but tell that to the 3 parties involved...

We were better off under JCPOA.

Hell, we were better off on 27th Feb.

There is no guarantee of any final deal, no.

If I was a betting person I would put money on it though. I think it is clear both the US & Iran want an end to the war now. As things stand they can both claim some victories and I'm not sure there would be anything to gain for either side in resuming the war.

Israel are in a different position to the US with regard to Lebanon so they would probably prefer to continue fighting Hezbollah (if Trump allows them to).

Reuters reporting several ships told Hormuz still closed... danger of attack.

Iran has now said it will pull out of ceasefire if Lebanon is still attacked.

Twiglets1 · 08/04/2026 15:57

Reuters report the US as saying that the ceasefire will start when the SoH opens.

A senior Iranian official involved in the discussions earlier told Reuters Tehran could open the strait on Thursday or Friday ahead of peace talks.

But any opening would be conditional on a framework for the ceasefire being agreed, and be "limited" - with ships still requiring Iran's permission to pass.

Notonthestairs · 08/04/2026 16:02

Pakistan said Lebanon was part of the ceasefire arrangements. So why is it still being attacked?

But surely shipping companies and their insurers would need to see a well established ceasefire in place before risking sending cargo, vessel and crew through?

My understanding is that the "closing" of the Strait is mostly due to the risk posed rather than a physical blockade. If bombs are still dropping has the risk decreased enough for it to be now be considered worth the risk/"open"?

I did just hear (Times radio) that no one wants to get stuck if things break down so some are holding off.

Legssses · 08/04/2026 16:20

Seeing headlines like this doesn't make the situation seem that much different from 2 days ago. The only change is a commitment to talks on friday, but what has changed "on the ground" for exports through the region?

Yes insurance & safety concerns will affect the number ofnew ships going through I imagine, until there is a permanent ceasefire in place.

But don't forget many ships have already been trapped there for some time - they need to go through.

Because Israel were not part of the 2 week peace deal that was agreed between Iran and the US.

What Netanyahu's office said was that they support the peace deal with Iran but not Lebanon.

Pakistan were only the mediators between the US & Iran, that is all.

Notonthestairs · 08/04/2026 16:27

The statement from Pakistan says the US and its allies have agreed to an immediate ceasefire everywhere including Lebanon.

I agree, I am just pointing out that, as per your post, the US are waiting for the Strait to be open before declaring a ceasefire, but I'm saying I don't see how the Strait can be considered any more open than it is now without a ceasefire.

While it's excellent news that Trump has stepped back from obliterating a civilisation, the world economy is in much the same place as it was 2 days ago.

RedTagAlan · 08/04/2026 16:44

@TopPocketFind

Thks for posting that announcement.

I think the freedom of the seas bit might be an issue if Trump sets up his joint venture with Iran to charge.
