“Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir wore a noose pin on his lapel to signal his support for the bill”

I first heard about this on Facebook and thought it might be anti-Israel fake news. But no, it’s true.

Absolutely horrifying and sickening.

Itamar Ben-Gvir wearing a black suit, red tie and white kippah, talking on a podium in front of Israeli flags

Palestinians convicted of lethal attacks face death penalty under new Israeli law

The new law, passed on Monday, was pushed hard by the far-right and Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

Yet people will still defend Israel

Whats sad is Israel knows only too well about what its like to be on the receiving end of persecuting but still has no problem inflicting this on other minorities.

They are losing the good will they have enjoyed for decades very rapidly.

Boolabus · 01/04/2026 08:31

Absolutely and it has already been explained to them twice. @Pineneedlesincarpet It is not about the crime it is who is committing the crime. Terrorist activity killing Palestinians in in the West Bank = zero punishment, terrorist activity carried out by a Palestinian against an Israeli = tried in a military court and death penalty within 90 days if convicted, a court that currently has an over 90% conviction rate and tries juveniles in the military court.

That's the application of the law not the law itself. Although as I understand the law hasn't come into effect yet so we can't tell how it will be applied. Presumably if only Palestinians commit deadly terrorist attacks it will only be Palestinians that will be tried for the crimes.

Israel is at war as well and presumably will consider all Palestinians in Israel as the potential enemy as we did with Germans in the UK during the War.

I'm glad my hints regarding the military court have been picked up on by someone as that would be a more fruitful path to go down in my opinion.....are we not talking Geneva Convention issues here PEOPLE??? Honestly. I have to do everyone's work for them 😆

TheVeloursImgonnaChangeNsoul · 01/04/2026 08:40

They'll get a fair trial
Kangaroo court style.

People are defending Israel bringing in an law aimed at Palestinians which is clearly based on racial/ethnic discrimination and oppression. The fact that those same people are against the death penalty in all situations does not negate that they are defending (minimising, explaining, excusing, justifying) Israel’s actions.

No we aren't, assuming you include me in this.

Most are just trying to be factual about this new law.

I'm not defending the fact the Israel parliament has approved a law that would make the death penalty the default sentence for those convicted of deadly terror attacks.

They are a democratic country and not many other democratic countries have the death penalty (notable exceptions are Singapore, Japan & some states in the US)

It is factually true that the UK cannot tell other countries what to do with regard to their own laws.

That may be annoying to you but anyway.

GateauSVP · 01/04/2026 08:20

The people promoting this law were wearing badges depicting a noose.

That's not normal behaviour.

If you're defending this bill then something has clearly gone wrong somewhere...

No it's not normal behaviour.

I imagine we can all agree on that.

You didn’t answer my questions.

As I keep saying, you're clouding the issue.
And your questions are pointless. Sorry.

If I were you, OP, (and Ive mentioned this already) Id be looking at the fact they are being tried in a military court..... far more fruitful for your discussion.......🧐

And they seem to be running the show in Israel whilst Netanyahu hides in his bunker.

How anyone can defend this law is beyond me. A noose.

So Palestinians living their life in the occupied West Bank are the enemy? Good to know where your views are at, explains a lot, engaging pointless

You do know the military courts try all the "crimes" committed by Palestinians including traffic offenses .

I’m not clouding the issue. I am asking you a question about your understanding of the purpose of this legislation. The purpose is clear to all. You are unwilling to answer because you don’t want to admit the purpose.

You are not discussing in good faith on this thread. Your repeated appeals to “let’s stick to the facts” whilst refusing to discuss uncomfortable facts, your criticism of me for “being emotional” (we’re talking about potentially hanging children ffs) and your attempts to change the subject away from the death penalty to military courts all demonstrate thiis.

'Ben Gvir the politician who championed the bill has been convicted 8 times of anti Arab terrorism and also defends IDF soldiers to rape Palestinian inmates. That is Israel.'

It is not Israel. It is one man who holds the balance of power in Netanyahu's government. A truly bad apple but don't tar all Israelis as believing or behaving the same as him.

Youre suggesting motives in passing this legislation that none of us can know. You even refer to champagne. It's irrelevant.

If we can't be factual and have to muddy the waters with emotion that's one thing. But you are talking about the law. You can't discuss law by talking about people drinking champagne.

Im going to have to duck out now due to work. Apologies. Not hiding from anything obviously. More than happy to argue anything law related.

roses2 · 01/04/2026 09:21

Why is this country not sanctioned like Russia, Iran etc I just don't understand how such a small country can have so much power over the rest of the world.

Yes, its such a mystery. Who could possibly guess at the motives behind this legislation?

nb You saying something is irrelevant doesn’t make it so. I know you don’t really believe that people’s actions and demeanour when they are enacting life and death legislation are irrelevant to the meaning and purpose of the legislation. You are not convincing anyone.

Anyway, I think you are just goading as you are certainly not engaging in rational and meaningful examination of the issues so I’ll leave you to your emojis and attempted derailing.

I do think that this legislation in the hands of Israel is sinister, because we have seen so many “mistakes “ in the war. I would not trust that government an inch.

Why is it 'shame on all of us'? Nobody here is responsible for what other governments do. I agree that the noose badge is shocking and abhorrent but I doubt very much whether the average Israeli agrees with his stance!

You're delusional if you think most of them aren't cheering this on.
