“Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir wore a noose pin on his lapel to signal his support for the bill”

I first heard about this on Facebook and thought it might be anti-Israel fake news. But no, it’s true.

Absolutely horrifying and sickening.

Palestinians convicted of lethal attacks face death penalty under new Israeli law

The new law, passed on Monday, was pushed hard by the far-right and Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

My opinion is that it will be discriminatory in practice. This is also the position of the UK government by the way.

However, I doubt the UK government will be sanctioning Israel for it because it is also the case that countries are entitled to set their own laws.

Lots of examples of laws in other countries that the UK wouldn’t endorse but they don’t sanction them for it.

The law won't be discriminatory in practice. It will just affect more nationals from a particular country who have a higher propensity to commit that crime. That's not discrimination that's just reality. That would be like saying we can't have laws against knife crime in the UK because black people are overrepresented.

Its interesting the trials are held in a military court though, suggesting they are military combatants but are being charged with terrorist offences. Thats something I would be looking at rather than throwing words like "apartheid " around which have lost all meaning.

I think people are trying to get to the facts rather than one person's subjective take on this. Too much discussion regarding Gaza is biased and blurs what reality is. No one knows what the truth is any more to judge unfortunately. To the detriment of the people on both sides who are suffering.

Not sure why you keep mentioning Gaza this law is in Israel and mainly going to impact Palestinians living in the West Bank, Palestinians in Gaza are in Gaza. It is discriminatory because it does not hold any accountability or punishment for Palestinians killed by terrorist acts carried out by an Israeli. We have seen an increase in terrorist activities by Israelis in the West bank who go unpunished.

We have laws against knife crime in the UK and anyone that commits it is treated the same regardless of who they kill with that knife, there lies the difference.

Give it a few hours and it will get worse. I stepped away from this board for a while as the daily dose of pro Israeli propaganda was too much to take.

The hatred towards Palestinians, ignoring how many women and children have been slaughtered, Israeli settler violence the list goes on. People will continue waving the flag that Israel can do no wrong.

I think we are just discussing the facts regarding this law and how it will work. And then be able to judge whether it is technically and practice, discriminatory. I personally don't see the need therefore to bring in "how many women and children have been slaughtered, Israeli settler violence" as they are not relevant to this particular legal issue.

That seems to also be the case with the Israeli law.

What's wrong with you? Are you unable to judge the law objectively? Using examples from other situations to see whether your arguments work or not?

I know. I was heartened by the first few responses and hoped that maybe even Israel supporters would see this development as a step too far and not try to justify it.

But no, Isreal’s actions must be defended however racist, oppressive and abhorrent apparently.

Why bother posting your thoughts on MN then? Seems a bit of a waste of time if you aren't seeking to persuade anyone.

Give your argument that their actions are "racist, oppressive and abhorrent" in clear objective terms so we can see what you think and judge accordingly. You aren't in a vacuum. People can be persuaded by clear arguments. Look at the facts and then make your argument. Rather than sounding off about other people's comments on your own thread.

Because you are being racist with your comment about black people. If you can’t see that then there is no point in further engagement with you.

GateauSVP · 01/04/2026 08:20

The people promoting this law were wearing badges depicting a noose.

That's not normal behaviour.

If you're defending this bill then something has clearly gone wrong somewhere...

If you read what I wrote you will see that I am using it as an example of a situation where it would be ridiculous not to have a law against knife crime just because statistically one ethnic group are more likely to commit knife crime. That's not discriminatory. It's just fact. I'm not sure why some people on this thread have failed to understand this point

Similarly in the Palestinian case, just because one group are more likely to commit a particular crime doesn't mean you shouldnt have a law against that crime.

Now give me your arguments against the points I raised rather than spouting the old kneejerk of "you're a racist".

TreesandGreen · 01/04/2026 08:25

Oh my gosh! Just clicked back on this thread, and it's taken a turn.
So depressing that there are people in this country and elsewhere who are doing anything less than completely condemning the apartheid murder bill/law.
They walk among us folks, they walk among us, which is scary and depressing.
Free Palestine 🇵🇸 and may love and humanity prevail in the end ✌️🕊️🙏

You are ignoring the actions of Israelis and settlers against Palestinians, and that these two are terror attacks.

Your refusal to acknowledge speaks volumes.

“Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir wore a noose pin on his lapel to signal his support for the bill”

Do you think Ben-Gvir was hoping this legislation would be used against Israeli Jews when he wore his noose lapel badge? Do you think the legislators toasting the success of the bill with champagne were looking forward to it being used against Israeli Jews? Or are you able to admit, as we all know, that the death penalty by hanging is only intended for and will only be used against Palestinians?

Yes I agree. That's particularly hideous. I don't think people are defending the bill. I'm against capital punishment full stop.

I just am discussing the suggestion it means Israel is an "apartheid " state and the law is discriminatory. Which is worth looking at as these words are thrown around willynilly these days and the truth and facts are obscured. Which doesn't help anyone, let alone the Palestinians.

None of your points progress the discussion regarding the actual law itself though. You"re being emotional which is not a bad thing in itself but doesn't help actually getting to the truth.

I'm not sure it speaks anything at all, really. I don't think it helps when it comes to law to get emotional and bring in other issues. We can preface everything we write with a caveat about all the other bad things going on and our opinion on those but Im not sure that would move things on re the issue of a particular law.

Absolutely and it has already been explained to them twice. @Pineneedlesincarpet It is not about the crime it is who is committing the crime. Terrorist activity killing Palestinians in in the West Bank = zero punishment, terrorist activity carried out by a Palestinian against an Israeli = tried in a military court and death penalty within 90 days if convicted, a court that currently has an over 90% conviction rate and tries juveniles in the military court.

Anyone reading what you re posting will get the impression you re not interested in helping the Palestinians.

OR you are just looking for an argument, not sure which really.

Its very clear that many Israelis see the Palestinians as "Sub Human"

I hope their Supreme Court strikes this bill down but i wont hold my breath.
