Israel votes for death penalty for Palestinians convicted of lethal attacks

“Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir wore a noose pin on his lapel to signal his support for the bill”

I first heard about this on Facebook and thought it might be anti-Israel fake news. But no, it’s true.

Absolutely horrifying and sickening.

Itamar Ben-Gvir wearing a black suit, red tie and white kippah, talking on a podium in front of Israeli flags

Palestinians convicted of lethal attacks face death penalty under new Israeli law

The new law, passed on Monday, was pushed hard by the far-right and Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

Apologies, for continuing with derail. I just find it hard to believe the penny hasn't dropped for some on what most of us stand for.

The vast majority of posters on those threads (the long running hostage ones) were on the pro Israel side @Boolabus and we kept on topic and peaceful. A few from "the other side" did pop up and be nasty on occasion, I think they were the only deletions.

As for you saying "what most of us stand for" the group you refer to is not a homogenous group, as you referred to yourself earlier. It seems to me that some are more extreme than others in their views and they most definitely are not respectful to anyone with a different opinion.

That thread was respected by "both" sides, maybe there was a random cruel poster every now and again but for the most part it was not derailed.

we kept on topic and peaceful.
And you were left to do that, that's my point!

As for you saying "what most of us stand for" the group you refer to is not a homogenous group,
No we're not but most of the individuals stand for peace, justice and human rights it is obvious by how they post, similar values doesn't equal homogeneous

It seems to me that some are more extreme than others in their views and they most definitely are not respectful to anyone with a different opinion.
Well it's a public forum and there are extreme views all over this site. There were posts deleted on this thread yesterday that had questionable views. None of the threads are immune to that.

Twiglets1 · 30/04/2026 18:55

Well you make the pro Palestinian posters sound so lovely and respectful @Boolabus

Yet that's not my experience on these threads or presumably, the experience of all the Jewish and pro Israel posters who have chosen not to post on this board anymore because it's so toxic.

Still, I would like to move forward positively so I'm hoping we can all continue more politely in future. A girl can dream!

No one forces you to keep posting. If this board is so toxic why are you all over it with so many threads and so many posts?

FloralDeerPattern · 30/04/2026 19:08

@Twiglets1 I wonder if Muslim posters still post here? I read a thread on this board earlier with 2 very blantant anti Muslim posts on a short enough thread, they had been up for hours before I saw them, lots of people including yourself had posted after those posts so presumably read them but not a single person challenged these posters. Presumably they weren't reported either considering mumsnet took them down almost immediately after I reported them for spreading hate.

Report racism where you see it and I will do the same where I see it. I have reported racist posts against Muslims myself in the past, though I don't know which posts you are referring to on this occasion. I was pretty busy just reading all the posts I was tagged in tbh.

I don't think you can should assume you were the only person who reported the posts though, there may have been others and that is why they got prioritised in the report queue for deletion.

There were some lovely balanced respectful Palestinian posters at the beginning but they were soon piled on and stopped posting. One particular poster had friends who had been killed working as medics in Gaza and had to put up with posters who were suggesting they were killed because they were Hamas it was dreadful. They no longer post.

Perhaps but these posts were up for hours and hours before I saw them, they were very nasty blantently anti muslim posts, no maybe are they crossing a line. Some posters agreed with them, your post which was 3 posts after one of the awful comments said 'Agree with above comments' but obviously didn't get as far as 3 posts above yours with your reading. It's a shame that you didn't having awful posts like that up for hours unchallenged really isn't nice.

I also remember a fantastic muslim poster that was so fair and knowledgeable whose thread about the murdered filmmaker was deleted because the anti Palestine posters came on to start the usual deflection and insults. Didn't see them much after that

Yes and many of us have mentioned in the past that after reporting racist and dehumanising posts about Palestinians we've been told to challenge it in the thread and it wasn't deleted, doubtful this happens to other communities

www.adalah.org/uploads/uploads/Briefing_Paper_Death_Penalty_Bill_26_March_2026.pdf

This document, dated March 26, 2026, updated on adalah.org, contains background to the bill, who it applies to, execution procedures, and why it violates international law.

Yeah I don't often get accused of not reporting enough posts.

I certainly would have reported an obviously racist post if I had seen it. The good thing is we are all free to report posts and they do get removed if they break site guidelines.

Let me reassure you about that.

I have sometimes reported posts I consider to be racist or antisemitic and MN has given me the same line about challenging it in the thread and not deleted it.

Challenging it in the thread leads to long debates which isn't always what you want ... but ultimately it's up to MN and the mods don't always agree with those of us who report posts that they break site guidelines.

I have seen that repeatedly. Same with the disgusting dehumanizing posts such as there is no famine when it was clearly declared under international guidelines. Supposedly that is not misinformation.

There is a very serious anti Muslim rhetoric that is pervasive in the site .

Sorry, I really should stay on topic.

This is a really clear article about why it is discriminatory and why the UK government has an obligation to act.

https://www.hrw.org/news/2026/04/29/israels-discriminatory-death-penalty-law-requires-uk-action

Thank you for this from Human Rights Watch. I hope people do read it in its entirety - I know some posters don’t do links - here is a paragraph from it:

We are also particularly alarmed by the potential implications for children, as this legislation does not include safeguards excluding children from its application. Israel is one of the few countriesin the world that systematically prosecutes children in military courts, and the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child has highlighted Israeli authorities’ “repeated denial of its legal obligations” and “complete disregard of [the Committee’s] recommendations…in relation to the arrest and detention of Palestinian children”. Even beforeOctober 2023, there were reports of Palestinian children in detention being beaten, starved, exposed to cold, denied medical care, and subjected to solitary confinement and sexual abuse. Child detention has risen dramatically since October 2023, and more children are being held in administrative detention without charge or trial. At the same time, Israeli authorities continue to restrict access for legal representatives and independent monitors, including the International Committee of the Red Cross, in violation of their legal obligations.

It happens on the Black Mumsnetters threads, the recent thread about the racial abuse of Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo was an eye opener.

It's all informed by the same thing, supremacism and the inability to empathise with people who are deemed "other".

The overt racism FloralDeer pointed out on the other thread was easy to spot for anyone with any self awareness about actual racism.......

They are right to be concerned

Israel's death penalty does not protect children
There is no exemption for them
There is no suggestion even of clemency

Israel’s military courts set the minimum age of criminal responsibility at 12 years old. Palestinian children as young as 12 are already being tried in these courts,
already being convicted at a rate of 96%
Children are already signing confessions in Hebrew, a language many of them cannot read. Now, the state that presides over this system has granted itself the power to execute those its courts convict.

The law does not say “adults only.”

It does not say “over 18.”
It simply says Palestinians.

Lets not forget
children have been called terrorists for throwing stones !

That is absolutely chilling. Everyone is very quick to (rightly) criticise Iran for how they treat their people and for executing people on spurious charges, but a blind eye will be turned for Israel.

That is chilling. I would hope, if the law gets through the supreme court, this would be amended. I don't think, even Israel, could weather the storm of executing children.

criminal responsibility at 12 years old
Anyone who works in the area of child development knows how messed up this is.

It's because of racism. Palestinians deserve it in their eyes, even children. We've seen people on here justify the killing of children, they crossed the yellow line, they threw stones stones are very dangerous, Palestinian children can be terrorists, if only Palestinians loved their children as much as they hate Jews, there is even some gross quote that is trotted out about how Israelis can't forgive 'Arabs' for forcing them to kill their children, they just don't have a choice in the matter 😢 .

The reaction to Israeli children being killed - bomb them, starve them, kill them, what else do they expect.

The reaction to Palestinian children being killed - that's very sad, I hope it is investigated by the perpetrators.

It's deeply embedded racism that is not going away any time soon.

I recall many of those comments being said here
and if it’s being said it’s more of a worry what’s not being said.

Israel ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1991.
The Convention could not be clearer: Article 37(a) explicitly prohibits the death penalty for offences committed by persons under 18.
Article 37(b) states that detention of children must be a last resort.

Article 40 guarantees fair trial rights for every child in conflict with the law.

Israel’s sustained response to these obligations has been to declare that the UNCRC does not apply to children in the occupied territories, a position the UN and international legal consensus firmly rejects
(TRT World, 2025; UN Special Procedures, 2025).

Yes just the fact that people thought it was OK to air those thoughts says a lot of how normalised this racism is. When people don't care about children being shot in the street it's hard to imagine they will care about them hanging from the gallows.
