Are you honestly comparing the Islamic Republic with the United States now (ignoring the ridiculous coparison with the 50s)?

I think a person would need a very vivid imagination to come to that conclusion from my post.

I came to the same conclusion and I don't have a particularly vivid imagination.

https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2026/jan/13/hundreds-of-gunshot-eye-injuries-found-in-one-iranian-hospital-amid-brutal-crackdown-on-protests

An ophthalmologist in Tehran has documented more than 400 eye injuries from gunshots in a single hospital, as overwhelmed medical staff struggle to cope with the toll of an increasingly violent crackdown on nationwide protests by Iranian authorities.

Three doctors, in messages forwarded to the Guardian on Monday, described overwhelmed hospitals and emergency wings overflowing with protesters who had been shot. Medical staff said the gunshot wounds were mostly concentrated on protesters’ eyes and heads – a tactic that rights groups said authorities used against demonstrators in the country’s 2022 Woman, Life, Freedom protests.

UK announces ‘full and further sanctions’ amid Iran killings and arrests

“[Security forces] are deliberately shooting at the head and the eyes. They want to damage the head and the eyes so they can no longer see, the same thing they did in [2022],” said a doctor in Tehran. The doctor added that many of the patients had to have their eyes removed and were blinded.

Any regime that uses these sort of tactics to control its own people does not deserve any kind of “defence” or “on the other hand” comment.
This regime is indefensible. The Iranian people have spoken loudly and clearly at heartbreaking cost to themselves and their loved ones.

I’ve seen some odd attempts to derail and minimise what’s happening in Iran right now on this forum. Not entirely sure why people are doing it.
Meanwhile, thousands (or possibly tens of thousands) have been killed in Iran by the regime in Iran in just a few weeks.

How am I minimising it. I have no agenda other than wanting an honest democracy for the Iranian people, in fact for everyone.

You’re disrespecting people who are putting their lives ( and eyesight 😣) on the line in order to achieve an honest democracy for the Iranians.

Yes I was reading about the huge surge in eye injuries this morning. One thing that is really haunting me is the stories of security forces going into hospitals and killing injured protestors there, aneld even taking them out to kill them. Its all quite hard to comprehend.

Show me one post where I am disrespecting the people putting their lives on the line. I have no other agenda in this matter other than wanting a true democracy for the people if that is what they want.

I apologise if I’m confusing you. I was merely mentioning the Glorious Revolution because it is what I wish upon the Iranian people to achieve an honest democracy with as few casualties as possible. It is evident that that is not going to happen and the only way the Iranian people are going to achieve a true and honest democracy is going to be a brutal struggle.

EasternStandard · 23/01/2026 12:16

To show that even a country that is perceived to be the land of free with free speech, it can be suppressed but I was in no way saying it is comparable with Irans draconian rules.

There are suspicions of the use of chemical weapons, which is beyond horrific.

You are correct. It seems the UN Council on Human Rights is holding an emergency session as we speak to discuss this specifically concerning reports on photographs from Sabzevar. If it turns out to be true, it doesn’t matter if they are supported by the majority of Iranians or not, there has to be an international response.

Ihatetomatoes · 23/01/2026 18:04

"The world needs to put pressure on this regime.”

British-Iranian actor Omid Djalili urges the world to keep its eyes on Iran and investigate “very disturbing” reports that the Iranian government is using chemical weapons against protesters.

Omid Djalili was speaking to Kate McCann and Stig Abell on Times Radio Breakfast. Listen every day live from 6-10am.

"Allegations of Chemical Warfare:

In a disturbing development reminiscent of the worst war crimes in the region’s history, credible reports suggest the regime may be deploying prohibited substances against its own citizens. Former UK Minister and Member of Parliament Bill Rammell stated on Saturday that he had reviewed a “credible report” detailing the use of “toxic chemical substances” against protesters.

According to Rammell, the substances are causing injuries that lead to death days after exposure. If verified, this usage would constitute a flagrant violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, to which Iran is a signatory. While previous crackdowns involved tear gas and nerve agents, the lethality described in these new reports represents an “extraordinary” escalation by Tehran’s security apparatus as it struggles to contain the unrest."

against its own citizens.... note not Western 'troublemakers' bur the regime itself using them against its people

I’m not any sort of expert in World politics, or international law, but I am really struggling to understand why this is all so quiet in the media and (outside of my own family) from my friends and colleagues.
I am struggling to understand why the mass murder of Iranians by their own government is something that should be dealt with internally (how? These people have no weapons or money??) and we should just leave them to it.
Generally when a government that no one voted for reacts to its thousands of young people protesting with mass murder, the “international community “ reacts.
And generally when the outcome of a situation has this much impact in terms of the quelling of Islamist terrorism, and the stability of the entire Middle East, Western countries give a shit.
I feel like I’m living in some kind of parallel universe to be honest.
Thank God for you people on this thread because otherwise I think I might think I was somehow hallucinating.
