Writer Naoise Dolan Abducted in International Waters

KoalaKoKo · 08/10/2025 10:59

Writer, Naoise Dolan, has just been illegally abducted from international waters by the Israeli government. Prior to being kidnapped, she wrote about her journey for The Guardian, explaining why they will not get Israel to distribute aid on their behalf.

“Israel likes to ask why we don’t “just” let them distribute our supplies. Besides there being good reason to distrust that this would actually happen when Israel has been deliberately starving Palestinians for two years, doing so would tacitly concede that Israel has the right to control Palestinian waters.”

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/oct/08/israel-seize-ship-gaza-flotilla-prison

Israel have just abducted 145 peace activists at gunpoint from international waters, in breach of international law. This follows their abduction of 500 people last week, some of which are still in captivity and those who have been released have reported brutal treatment where they were denied access to water, medical care and legal aid.

Thank you for highlighting this @KoalaKoKo

DrPrunesqualer · 08/10/2025 20:12

Thanks for the links @KoalaKoKo

more needs to be done about Israel taking control of International waters.

They have no right
Neither can boats be seized or people removed from them in International waters in the circumstances the flotilla aid boats have been by Israel.

FiatLuxAdAstra · 08/10/2025 20:32

Thanks
I think I will also mention their continued violation of Lebanese and Syrian airspace to include civilian murdering bombings, and illegal occupation of southern Syria.

International law does not allow nations to violate the sovereignty of neighbouring states on such flimsy excuses.

@HellsBalls
Absolute bollocks. How close are they to the restricted zone? Which way were they heading? Was their intent to enter the restricted zone?

It appears Israel may have violated international law:

”The U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea stipulates that a nation’s territory does not extend beyond 12 nautical miles (19 kilometers) from its shores. It says authorities may exercise control up to 24 nautical miles (45 kilometers) from land to prevent violation of customs, immigration, fiscal or sanitary laws.
Robbie Sabel, an international law expert and former legal adviser to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, said states generally don’t have the right to seize ships in international waters, though there are exceptions, including during armed conflict.”

”the interceptions began some 70 nautical miles (130 kilometers) from the shores of Israel and Gaza.“

“Adalah, a legal rights group in Israel representing the activists, said in a statement that “the abduction of peaceful civilians in international waters, constitutes a brazen violation of international law.”
Omer Shatz, an Israeli international law expert who teaches at Sciences Po University in Paris and co-litigated a previous flotilla case before the Supreme Court of Israel, told The Associated Press that even if the disputed siege of Gaza was considered lawful, “international law paves a humanitarian road from the high seas to Gaza,” he said.

“If the basic needs of the population are not provided by the occupying power, there is a right to provide humanitarian aid, albeit under certain conditions,” Shatz said. Israel has the right to board and search the vessels to verify the cargo, as it does with aid trucks crossing into Gaza by land.

“Enforcing international maritime law is a challenge across the globe. Generally, only states can take other states to court for violations of the U.N. Convention for the Laws of the Sea. But there are other legal frameworks and mechanisms individuals can use to seek justice, including those their state flags are party to. For example, Israel forcibly removing people from foreign-flagged vessels in international waters and taking them to Israel could be considered a crime, Shatz said.
The state prosecutors’ office of Spain told The Associated Press on Thursday that it will gather information on the flotilla interception as part of its ongoing effort to collect evidence of possible human rights violations by Israel to be presented in international courts.”

Will she be treated horrifically like Greta and not be given a cushion to sit on? Not be given Netflix? Be denied nail varnish?

Greta has not publicly expanded on her alleged mistreatment in Israeli detention, although she has informed Swedish authorities, beyond stating she was put in a bedbug infested cell and denied clean water to drink.

However, worrying reports have been in the press by eyewitnesses. This is from Israeli National News https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/415833.

“Swedish sources who claimed to have visited her said Thunberg suffered from dehydration, rash, and weakness, which she attributed to the poor conditions in her cell. Another detainee reportedly told diplomatic representatives she saw Thunberg being held while holding Israeli flags.”

”Turkish activist Ersin Çelik, who also participated in the flotilla, told the Anadolu news agency: “They dragged Greta by her hair in front of our eyes, beat her, and forced her to kiss the Israeli flag. They made her crawl. They did everything imaginable to her as a warning to others because she was a public figure. In other words, they did exactly what the Nazis did.”

”Another activist, who claimed he was deported to Israel after being arrested, said: “She was wrapped in an Israeli flag and displayed like a trophy.”

Also in counterbalance:
“The Foreign Ministry also responded on its official X account: “Claims of abuse against Greta Thunberg and other detainees from the Hamas-Sumud flotilla are blatant lies. All detainees’ legal rights were fully respected. Interestingly, Greta and others even insisted on extending their detention. Greta herself never filed any complaint with Israeli authorities regarding these absurd, baseless accusations—because they never happened.”

Greta Thunberg alleges mistreatment in Israel; Ben Gvir: 'I'm proud of Prison Services'

Greta Thunberg claims she faced harsh conditions after joining the 'Sumud' flotilla to Gaza. Minister Ben-Gvir rejected the claims, calling the activists terror supporters.

The stories from those abducted from the last flotilla about their treatment are a disgrace.

belittling what happened to them is disgusting

So is the implication that anything other than gang rape and being stoned to death is perfectly ok to do to a female peace activist detained by military force.

TicklishMauveSquid · 09/10/2025 01:29

Meh.

Hope the bed bugs don’t bite toooo much.

Israel has enough to deal with, without these moronic, virtue signalling, ‘activists’ on a fun boat trip trying to get into a war zone, using up Israel’s time and resources to bring their offerings of a few cans of baby milk so they can dine out for the next few years on what amazing ‘humanitarians’ they are.

Especially when there’s pallets of baby milk sitting in Gaza waiting for the UN to do what they’re supposed to be doing, which is distributing it and not letting Hamas steal it.

Are we going to talk about the genocide of thousands of Christians in Syria by Syrian Muslim forces?

Don’t be ridiculous! No Jews, no news!
Mass murders and attempted genocides by Muslims against non-Muslims goes unnoticed by the antisemites.

I think we can be sure their treatment was civilized and respectful.
Or there is evidence of physical injuries?

JacknDiane · 09/10/2025 07:45

Belittling and mocking anyone who shows sympathy with Gaza seems to be the way pro Israel posters operate. Its something I'll remember from this board.

Feel free to start a thread and share some resources regarding this if you feel so strongly. Or are you just going to use it as a gotcha to belittle the struggle of the Palestinian people, while also exposing the fact that you don’t care about those struggling? These are real people who are being killed, not a political point scoring opportunity.

JacknDiane · 09/10/2025 07:50

I've also noticed the phrase "No Jews No news!" Or similar here, posters saying why are you interested in Gaza so much??

Its obvious they don't want what's happening in Gaza discussed at all, they want Israel to obliterate the place without any discussion or kick back from people appalled at what happened.

But it's not worked. The world has seen what's happening and Israel will be very much a pariah state from now on. No one except their supporters will think of Israel with anything except disgust and horror.

Syrian Christians are real people too! How dare you dismiss their torture and deaths as political point scoring. Or the actual genocide of Yazidis, murdered, burned alive in cages for refusing to be sex slaves, raped daily.or mothers made to eat their own babies. Don’t you consider them real people either? Why are you desperate to shut down discussion of what is happening?

Pp raised Syria as there being no excuse for Israel to ignore neighbour’s sovereignty despite the massacres and atrocities being carried out there. The real question is why we aren’t all ignoring their ‘sovereignty’ to protect those people? I guess because like you, they don’t think Christians count as real people either.

As I said in my post. The Syrians you love to use as a point scoring opportunity are actual people. If you care so deeply, stop exploiting their suffering and start threads, organise marches and share resources.

But you won’t, because you only use them as an example on these threads and don’t actually give a shiny shite about them.

No, it is because people see that it is pure antisemitism dressed up as concern for Gaza, You paint it all as black and white - Hamas can do no wrong because Jews are bad. Yet it is Hamas who has so little regard for the people of Gaza and are happy to use them and their suffering as a tool to achieve its ends. People like you are choosing to ignore what those ends are due to your antisemitism.

You didn’t say Syrian Christians were real people (and have also failed to acknowledge them in this post). On the contrary you contrasted them with the ‘real people’ in Gaza. But you clearly don’t want to acknowledge the actions of Muslims in the region.

No, you’ve completely misinterpreted my post. I don’t know if you’ve done that on purpose or not. But I’ve said that the people you constantly bring up to points score are, in fact, real people who’s suffering is real, and isn’t just an opportunity to points score.

There you go ago with your ‘real people’ as though only certain groups count.
