Writer Naoise Dolan Abducted in International Waters

KoalaKoKo · 08/10/2025 10:59

Writer, Naoise Dolan, has just been illegally abducted from international waters by the Israeli government. Prior to being kidnapped, she wrote about her journey for The Guardian, explaining why they will not get Israel to distribute aid on their behalf.

“Israel likes to ask why we don’t “just” let them distribute our supplies. Besides there being good reason to distrust that this would actually happen when Israel has been deliberately starving Palestinians for two years, doing so would tacitly concede that Israel has the right to control Palestinian waters.”

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/oct/08/israel-seize-ship-gaza-flotilla-prison

Israel have just abducted 145 peace activists at gunpoint from international waters, in breach of international law. This follows their abduction of 500 people last week, some of which are still in captivity and those who have been released have reported brutal treatment where they were denied access to water, medical care and legal aid.

There you go ago with your ‘real people’ as though only certain groups count.

i think you’re doing it on purpose now.

I have never once mentioned that certain groups count - it’s you who think that. I am saying that the people you use as a points scoring opportunity are actual people. They’re not just figures on a screen, there to be used in a debate. They are women, men, children, who are suffering and deserve to be cared about. Not used for a debate when you want, and then discarded when you no longer care.

CatchingtheCat · 09/10/2025 08:16

No, it is because people see that it is pure antisemitism dressed up as concern for Gaza, You paint it all as black and white - Hamas can do no wrong because Jews are bad. Yet it is Hamas who has so little regard for the people of Gaza and are happy to use them and their suffering as a tool to achieve its ends. People like you are choosing to ignore what those ends are due to your antisemitism.

Your use of antisemitism isn't working anymore.
Trying to portray any criticism of Israel as antisemitic isn't working.
You may disagree with me all you like but putting words in my mouth isn't working.

You need to try harder and acknowledge the truth.

CatchingtheCat · 09/10/2025 08:36

You have made yourself clear. You don’t care about those who don’t fit your political message and what me to shut up about them.

But let’s talk about a selection of privileged protestors who purposefully put themselves in a position to be picked up by the Israelis and put on a plane home instead.., They are obviously the important people in this discussion.

No, that’s not the point I have tried to make at all. But I suppose when the depths of your intellectual ability and empathy is to sit and bash out a string of near incoherent words on Mumsnet, using people as political pawns, it’s not that easy to actually engage in a debate.

If you went back to OP post and talk of a ship
and occupants abducted in international waters we’d all scream piracy…because that’s what it is. State led piracy.

Jewish peace activists on board the boat Conscience have been abducted at sea and are being illegally detained in Israel. Before their abduction they explained their reasons for joining the flotilla and the damaging nature of Zionism.

Conscience is just one of the boats illegally intercepted in international waters. After the activists abductions the Freedom Flotilla Coalition released videos recorded before they were taken. They have them organised by country with the contact details you should use to highlight their plight to your governments. There are a huge number of citizens from a wide range of countries, do check the facebook page to find out if citizens of your country have been taken and what to do about it.

The UN Palmer Report 2011:

"Palmer found that Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza is legal. Palmer argued that since a state of conflict existed between Israel and militants in the Gaza Strip, a naval blockade to prevent receipt of arms by those militants would be a recognized form of self-defence. "

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon appointed a commission to inquire into what had happened. Sir Geoffrey Palmer was appointed to Chair the inquiry. He is a law professor and former Prime Minister of New Zealand.

@HellsBalls
Absolute bollocks. How close are they to the restricted zone? Which way were they heading? Was their intent to enter the restricted zone?

It appears Israel may have violated international law:

”The U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea stipulates that a nation’s territory does not extend beyond 12 nautical miles (19 kilometers) from its shores. It says authorities may exercise control up to 24 nautical miles (45 kilometers) from land to prevent violation of customs, immigration, fiscal or sanitary laws.
Robbie Sabel, an international law expert and former legal adviser to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, said states generally don’t have the right to seize ships in international waters, though there are exceptions, including during armed conflict.”

”the interceptions began some 70 nautical miles (130 kilometers) from the shores of Israel and Gaza.“

“Adalah, a legal rights group in Israel representing the activists, said in a statement that “the abduction of peaceful civilians in international waters, constitutes a brazen violation of international law.”
Omer Shatz, an Israeli international law expert who teaches at Sciences Po University in Paris and co-litigated a previous flotilla case before the Supreme Court of Israel, told The Associated Press that even if the disputed siege of Gaza was considered lawful, “international law paves a humanitarian road from the high seas to Gaza,” he said.

“If the basic needs of the population are not provided by the occupying power, there is a right to provide humanitarian aid, albeit under certain conditions,” Shatz said. Israel has the right to board and search the vessels to verify the cargo, as it does with aid trucks crossing into Gaza by land.

“Enforcing international maritime law is a challenge across the globe. Generally, only states can take other states to court for violations of the U.N. Convention for the Laws of the Sea. But there are other legal frameworks and mechanisms individuals can use to seek justice, including those their state flags are party to. For example, Israel forcibly removing people from foreign-flagged vessels in international waters and taking them to Israel could be considered a crime, Shatz said.
The state prosecutors’ office of Spain told The Associated Press on Thursday that it will gather information on the flotilla interception as part of its ongoing effort to collect evidence of possible human rights violations by Israel to be presented in international courts.”

The stories from those abducted from the last flotilla about their treatment are a disgrace.

belittling what happened to them is disgusting

These people are invested in Israel being seen as criminal and thug like.
None of them are the bjective and Greta herself hates both Israel and Germany, pre " genocide".
Many on the flotilla are unabashed anti Semites.

Why, pray tell are we expected to take the words of provocative clout chasers as gospel as trouble seeking and confirmation of bias is the priority of their mission and not the safe dispersal of their aid through far more efficient channels than a clout chasing, anti Semitic hoe down of a flotilla adjacent to a war zone?

And even if true, they would have all got what they wanted, just like Hamas and complicit Gazans have when they terrorised Israel.

Or do you think being able to see Israel and Israelis in any way out of what they think of them is a part of their mission?

Jesus being some critical thinking!

Nary a prisoner who was not on the flotilla to be found to confirm what has been alleged. Just a bunch of Israel and Israeli haters, hating.

Funny how they are quicker to be believed than those who survived 7/10, and with no objective testimony.....even though the violators of 7/10 filmed their violations for the world to see and much worse than anything that the Flotilla Posse have claimed to have endured and due to their choosing to not be deported.
People will have to excuse me for caring little.
Old time people say " if you don't hear, you gwine feel".
Or more contemporarily " run up and get done up".

Hamas and the Flotilla Posse should swap stories on those narratives to their hearts' content.

I've also noticed the phrase "No Jews No news!" Or similar here, posters saying why are you interested in Gaza so much??

Its obvious they don't want what's happening in Gaza discussed at all, they want Israel to obliterate the place without any discussion or kick back from people appalled at what happened.

But it's not worked. The world has seen what's happening and Israel will be very much a pariah state from now on. No one except their supporters will think of Israel with anything except disgust and horror.

this!

I think this is a very good point. So many people expressed doubt about the extent of the atrocities that happened on October 7th. I’ve seen it here on MN more than once, and also on other social media.
A woman who was on one of the boats spouted nonsense on camera just the other week, claiming that the female hostages had been treated well, that just one of them felt sad and ugly, because Hamas wouldn’t touch her. Absolutely despicable.
And yet as soon as the flotilla activists come out with some vague accusations of having had to sit on hard surfaces, bedbugs and Greta being wrapped in an Israeli flag people rush to express their sympathy.

There’s a land route for aid so not applicable.

If there truly has been a land route for aid, why is an important basis of the present peace deal based in no small part on the allowing in of aid?

Why have doctors returning from stints in Gaza been emphasising the lack of supplies, medicines, and malnutrition among patients? There was a doctor speaking of this yet again only last night on Channel 4 news.

Meh.

Hope the bed bugs don’t bite toooo much.

Israel has enough to deal with, without these moronic, virtue signalling, ‘activists’ on a fun boat trip trying to get into a war zone, using up Israel’s time and resources to bring their offerings of a few cans of baby milk so they can dine out for the next few years on what amazing ‘humanitarians’ they are.

Especially when there’s pallets of baby milk sitting in Gaza waiting for the UN to do what they’re supposed to be doing, which is distributing it and not letting Hamas steal it.

Then they could have just done what they should have done which was leave them be rather than taking them from international waters where they were legally allowed to be.
It would have saved them so much hassle.
