Conflict in the Middle East

Hamas won't disarm - that is the barrier to peace

So Hamas probably will reject a peace plan that has been globally accepted including the PA as it refused to disarm. Hasan fighters would rather carry on basically a suicidal guerrilla campaign rather than lay down arms for a peace so many right minded people desperately want.

Don't Hamas realise they will lose Gaza and effectively their 'fighting' force will be groups of jihadis who engage in occasional small arms fire that in all likelihood result in their deaths? What sort of mind set does this group have where they are willing to prolong a vicious war with no thought to the people they are meant to stand for?

Hamas hope is grounded only in the West being weak and applying more pressure on Israel and conceding to the terrorist Hamas. If the West more fully backs Israel now then Hamas may lose that one deranged hope and possibly their doomed war may end.

Of course it matters whether Israel recognises a Palestinian state. It needs to stop sanctioning the illegal settlements, too. After decades of effective control by Israel, I think can understand why some would rather die than go back to that, especially now.

Then let the war continue. It's a tragedy for the Palestinians

Apologies, I made an incorrect assumption.
Why do you think that Hamas would agree when Netanyahu has made it crystal clear that he will do everything in his power to prevent a Palestinian state?

What happens though if Hamas don’t agree?

I think I’d be reluctant to give up my limited means of defending myself to trust Netanyahu and the IDF would keep their side of the bargain.

Why did Hamas launch the attack on October 7th if they only had limited means of defending themselves?

You must be thinking of someone else.

Yes, I had a 'recollections vary' moment, but it's a big board.....

Lou802 · 03/10/2025 16:16

The actual barrier to peace is that neither side trusts the other. Which is completely understandable.

Trump has just announced Hamas have until Sunday to accept.

Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Friday that an agreement must be reached by 18:00 Washington time (22:00 GMT) on Sunday.

"If this LAST CHANCE agreement is not reached, all HELL, like no one has ever seen before, will break out against Hamas. THERE WILL BE PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST ONE WAY OR THE OTHER," Trump wrote in the Truth Social post.

Equal rights for Hamas to carry on holding weapons when they have a stated aim of killing all Jews ... I don't think so.

Equal rights for Netanyahu to carry on destroying Gaza, when they have a stated aim of finishing the job? I don’t think so.

Equal rights for Netanyahu to carry on taking land in the West Bank when they have a stated aim of “returning” Judea and Samaria to Israel? I don’t think so.

Netanyahu went on TV with a map of greater Israel for god’s sake. How much more intent do you need to be shown?

Why are the Palestinians not afforded the same guarantees of safety?

When the people you are empathising with are Hamas you know you've gone wrong somewhere.

Is it empathy you are identifying? I think possibly the problem is you are unable to think outside your own experience and put yourself in another’s shoes. I imagine this is something that needs to be learnt by both sides. How can we make progress if you can’t even consider what might be driving another’s behaviour?

That's right the problem is me.

Which is lucky that's what it's about because what Trump just said is terrifying.

Terrifying.

That’s the idea.
I think Hamas will call their bluff, and the fighting will continue.
After all, they are winning the propaganda war.
A bullet will be the only thing that alters their murderous beliefs.

So, what’s on the table now is, I believe, (i) that a fanatical antisemitic death cult disbands and nobody else pursues its aim of wiping out Israel and Jews. Or, failing that, (ii) Israel continues its armed mission to wipe out the fanatical antisemitic death cult.

The attraction of (i), I believe, is that Israeli hostages get released, that massive efforts are made to rebuild a better home for Palestinians, and that Israel has greater confidence in its security.

I have to say that (ii) seems much more likely. Fanatical antisemitic death cults do not go quietly. And they have every incentive not to do so because of the support they get from useful idiots (most of whom are themselves antisemites) in the west.

Sadly I think you might be right. If they do accept then I’ll be surprised. Hopeful but doubtful.

Oops, sorry. Meant to quote and reply to this post

Similarly, offering something to someone you know will never accept it, isn’t really negotiating. Netanyahu has refused to consider a two state solution. That’s also a barrier to peace.

Whomever did what to whomever, if two sides are to find peace, they both have to compromise.

GinaDav · 03/10/2025 19:38

Ihatetomatoes · 03/10/2025 08:25

This.

Arabs understand that Hamas are a jihadi death cult but stupid people here don't appear to realise that the best way for Palestinians is getting rid of hamas not enabling them to continue in their aims.

This is what Hamas do to Pro Palestinian westerners

Did you not read your own link? It wasn’t Hamas who did that.

The other problem with ii is, you wipe out one death cult, you sow the seeds of another. I daresay the people of Palestine, and many who support them, won’t be dissuaded that anti-Semitism is wrong when a Jewish Government is killing them. I don’t know what the answer is to stamp out anti-Semitism in the Middle East, but I know that what’s happening now isn’t it.

There was antisemitism by Arabs long before Israel was re-established.

How many seeds have been sown since the demise of ISIS and Al Qaeeda? Were more Nazis crates by the Allies fighting them in WW2?

Stop trying to justify antisemitism, would you justify islamaphobia? Did you go round saying it would be hard to dissuade people that islamaphobia is wrong after 7/7 or 9/11?

Why would you reward a state for what they did on 10/7? Tbh they have lost this war (that they started) and refuse to concede.

Reward is an odd choice of word to use.
Palestine is recognised by other countries as being its own state.
Netanyahu knew that they would never agree to this clause which is probably why he included it. Add to that that Nethanyahu cannot be trusted so there is absolutely no point in Hamas agreeing to it.

LilyCanna · 03/10/2025 19:59

I don't suppose the terms of the deal include returning all the land illegally seized by settlers in the West Bank?

If being Pro-Jewish means you agree with the utter horror that has been unfolding in Palestine then I doubt whatever you call your God will make much difference come judgement day.
