A mild, late, spineless stand. But a stand. It makes me wonder how much longer this can go on before governments realise people are fed up of this.

Salah did not tell them what to say at all. UEFA posted an absurdly pathetic tweet saying “farewell”. No mention of the fact he was shot dead while getting aid. Salah said “can you tell us how he died, where and why?”. That’s all. No mention of Israel killing children or civilians.

Well, to use your words, UEFA "doesn't have to speak out" and expand on their farewell tweet.

LifeOfAShowGirl · 17/08/2025 15:35

He was murdered while trying to get aid. You don’t see why that’s not an important thing to say?

You said that 'farewell' was bland. I included the rest of the quote which isn't bland.

Alleged causes of death aren't usually included in tributes from organisations. Usually a brief statement suffices. But nope, 'the face of premier football' saleh decided not and we then got the 2 banners, but no mention of the hostages which is very unacceptable no matter how irrelevant you think they are.

The wording was as deliberately selected, as the match. Lead with "killing children" - designed to have maximum impact. They aren't fooling everyone. Reading some of those tweets, was interesting.

Absolutely.

They may as well have said ‘killing babies’, but Hamas already stole that line on 7/10/23, of course.

GladioliGreen · 17/08/2025 21:58

I don't think people realise how much shit like this turns people off the pro Israel cause. When people see them bitching and whining because of a banner that reads 'stop killing children' it just makes people think what is wrong with you?

In no other conflict would a banner like this cause controversy because it isn't a controversial thing to say. The very thought that people feel for Palestinian children seems to drive some people wild and that is what makes people realise that this isn't about Hamas, it isn't about people fearing for Israels safety, it's about hate.

Exactly. It’s actually kind of entertaining watching them spinning themselves in knots trying to explain why “stop killing children” is a targeted message that we should be angry about.

Glad you're finding it entertaining.

For the trillionth time stop war massages are fine and lovely but they must be balanced so those hostages that you have said are irrelevant should also have been mentioned by the uefa primed by that <checks notes> 'face of the premiership' Mr Saleh.

Where in the words “civilians” and “children” are hostages excluded?

Also while you’re claiming that this was a targetted attack against Israel, because Tottenham have Jewish links in their history, Israeli citizens are now protesting against this war. But I guess they must also be anti semitic too?

Why must they be balanced with messages about freeing the hostages? 20,000 children have been killed. There’s about 20 or so hostages.

Netanyahu himself doesn’t care about the hostages. Families are begging him to end the war and get them released but domination across the Middle East and expanding Israel’s territories are more important to him.

Why is an Israeli life more important than a Palestinian life? What about the hostages that Israel keeps in prisioned without ever seeing the light of day? Without even being actually convicted of anything? What about those people?

Gloriia · 18/08/2025 08:04

'Why must they be balanced with messages about freeing the hostages? 20,000 children have been killed. There’s about 20 or so hostages.'

Every life matters. No one is irrelevant despite what the op has said.

Again anti war messages are good, we can all agree with that but they must relate to all victims and this silly 'ah well if you think a 'stop killing children' banner is aimed at the IDF then ha you've revealed who the villains are!' Is desperate and not true as we all know. However, that is clearly what the football player thinks so qatar funded uefa have only parroted his beliefs.

But it doesn’t just say children. It says ‘civilians’ as well. The hostages are civilians so I really can’t understand why so much anger.

20,000 children have been killed. That is modest estimates. 20,000. In comparison something like 1500 Ukrainian children have been killed since the war started.

Children are children. We shouldn’t be angry why UEFA put the message out. We should be angry why they didn’t do it earlier.

It's exactly about Hamas and that's why people are opposed to it. It's about brainwashing. It's black and white to you - it isn't, to me.

Why are you angry they didn't do it sooner? Were you expecting a football association to get involved, one way or another? If this was about one dead footballer, an image of his photo and a testimony would have been appropriate, at the match. It isn't about that though, it's being controlled by arabs and their billions. I repeat, once again, its about the Muslim Brotherhood.

I expected them to take a stand because they did so with Ukraine. I went to multiple UEFA matches at Wembley after the invasion and there were moments of silence, flags and displays for Ukraine.

That was wrong as well. Fans pay a lot of money to watch a match - not to be pulled into politics.

Again. Football is an inherently political sport and communities use it to come together and show support - same as how they do after things like terror attacks or tragic deaths. Just say you don’t like football and move on at this point.

No I won't move on; I support a club, thank you very much. It's been made explicit, politics is to be kept out of football. This why UEFA have tried to justify it by saying it's for reasons of humanity - not politics. If that's the case, their pay masters should dig deep and find their humanity and call off Hamas. Your lens is much narrower than mine.

Who has made that explicit? Because it is, as I keep saying, an inherently political sport and it always will be. That doesn’t change because you don’t like them saying “stop killing people@

Who has made it explicit - FIFA has. As for the message, it's as much about the instigator as the messenger. Do you even know that Qatar funds Hamas? Do you not think that vital fact is something to ponder over?

FIFA are not UEFA. Two different governing bodies with two different standards.

Qatar didn’t instigate this!!! I think you’re looking for a conspiracy where there isn’t one.

Salah called out UEFA for their absolutely pathetic messaging in their tweet.

UEFA started to get criticised for their lack of acknowledgement of the genocide occurring in Palestine. They were criticised for allowing Israel to compete in their competitions after banning Russia following their invasion of Ukraine.

UEFA responded at the first game of the new season with a statement that covered all bases. “Stop killing children. Stop killing civilians”.

That is not an anti-Israel statement. The hostages are included as civilians. Not sure what else they could have done to be honest.

Opposed to a banner that says 'Stop killing children' because of Hamas and 'brainwashing'? No, sorry but that doesn't make any sense that's why people are having their eyes opened by the pro Israel lots reaction to it.
