To think UN should now be in Gaza as a peacekeeping force

Seriously, when even the Daily Express are even calling mass forced starvation and putting pictures like this on their front pages.

Surely the UN could act as a peacekeeping force and stop this insanity?

Its obscene.

I agree. But what do the peace keepers even do?

ArtfulGoldWriter · 23/07/2025 20:08

the picture from the Daily express was so disturbing, it’s under review by mumsnet. Speaks volumes really.

Allow the aid agencies to do their jobs and get food to the 2 million people being starved in the first instance.

They'd probably get taken hostage by hamas.

And yet all the adults holding these alleged starving dc all seem so very well fed. There doesn't seem to be any common sense 'journalism' reporting that these poor dc may well have have significant medical problems.

hard to distribute food aid that Israel won’t even allow in, isn’t it?

All the main media outlets are showing multiple images of a starving population.

To imply that it’s somehow made up is pretty sick to be honest.

Genocide denial once more.

Yes of course. I mean- I would add complete sanctions on Israel too- in every possible way. Military, financial, diplomatic.

Israel is a rogue apartheid state and should be treated accordingly.

It's absolutely horrendous. I don't think it's made up even if there may be more to that particular photo than has been stated.

I am a longstanding supporter of an animal charity which provides free veterinary care in Gaza. A few weeks ago, the supporters' newsletter carried an article by their travelling vet and his assistant (both young and presumably fit and otherwise healthy men) which mentioned that they were so hungry that they were struggling to manage to walk/cycle relatively short distances to get to animals in distress, some of whom had been injured in incidents where civilians had been bombed and killed or badly injured. The newsletter article was not making a political point, just giving a description of the daily lives of their staff just now.

I know it is a really complicated situation but starving civilians should not be used as a method of war and it must stop. I've emailed my MP today. I'm not sure what good it will do but a massive public outcry to politicians seems to be the only avenue we have.

Chateaudiaries · 23/07/2025 20:31

It’s just heartbreaking what is happening to the people in Gaza. Unbearable.

Even if this little boy had a medical problem, he would still deserve food and medical treatment. You seem to have misplaced your decency.

Very little, if the UN "peacekeepers" in Lebanon are anything to go by. They stood by for decades while Hezbollah lobbed shells into Israel. They did nothing while terrorists built sophisticated underground bunkers/batteries, in some cases only a hundred metres from a UN base. The UN is a failed and utterly corrupt organisation.

Well, I guess we could argue that Israel don’t give a fuck about international law anyway - like I said- they should be treated like the apartheid state that they are if the UN aren’t a viable option.

We are also seeing images of hamas stuffing their faces in the tunnels. The problem is hamas, always hamas.

Some organisations are perpetuating the starvation myth by circulating pictures of dc with obvious genetic malformations and apparent chronic medical conditions whilst their well fed parents offer them up for exploitation.

Collective punishment is illegal under international law.

The children of Gaza are not Hamas.

Israels actions are a political choice.

Stop denying reality.

Peacekeepers aren't the answer, they're only potentially helpful once a deal has been agred, they don't intervene.

The key lies with Trump and telling Netanyahu that he has to open the borders to allow aid in, even if it means some is taken by Hamas (and even if it means his extreme right wing leave the govt). It is still morally wrong to do this to an entire civilian population and those children who may need specialist feeding (which is often why the adults can seem well fed, it's not yet general starvation and hopefully this will be averted) should get the food they need as they did before.

I totally understand the need for the hostages to be released and to somehow put pressure on Hamas but also think that this is not the way and that this doesn't help them in any way and is simply wrong too. Plenty of Israelis think this as well - I was just seeing a friend of mine post about a protest in Israel and I have just seen a post by an Israeli member of parliament (Gilad Kariv) condemning the actions of the government with regards to the restrictions. These are the voices we need more of and to support (screaming "apartheid state is probably the least helpful thing to do).

It's realy not the peacekeepers' fault. The one time one of them really did try to do anything about Hezbollah, they very kindly left a bomb under his car and killed him and 3 other peacekeepers. Their mandate is very limited and if no one cares about what they say, nothing will be done. It's not corruption, it's just they are toothless.

In any case, there's no money for any more peacekeeping missions since Trump's cuts have reduced the budget by about 25% so it's a moot point

Trump is unlikely to do that though given he has already said he supports the ethnic cleansing of Gaza.

Other countries such as European nations etx need to unite in sanctioning Israel and using all diplomatic leverage possible - and recognising the Palestinian state.

Similar sanctions to apartheid South Africa tbh who became an international pariah.

Me too. But this government - probably the worst in Israel's history - has dragged Israel into this absolute disaster. While there was obviously going to be a response post 7/10, this has to end now. It's become an endless, pointless war. And there has never been a war in history with a terrorist miltia force embedded in a civilian population that hasn't involved atrocities when trying to quel them militarily and this is no exception.

PauliesWalnuts · 23/07/2025 20:59

My brother was a UN peacekeeper in Bosnia during the war there. UN peacekeepers are only allowed to operate under very strict guidelines. If they went in now they would be killed in days.

MyDearEagle · 23/07/2025 20:59

I support Israel's right to exist.

Despite being left wing, I recognize widespread anti-semitism on the left.

I recognize that Hamas's existence represents a near-insurmountable obstacle to lasting peace.

I recognize the validity of Israel seeking the safe return of hostages.

None of this precludes Israel committing war crimes, and I strongly believe that they are, and it must be condemned.

If dismiss it, its because you have been radicalized.
